    CHAPTER I

Ahadith on prohibition of wearing gar-ments which hang below the ankles.

    Our Prophet prohibited wearing clothes

which hang below the ankles. Below are someof the ahadith narrated inSihah Sitta regard-ing this and which serve as main reference ofthe Wahhabis for their claim to fold the pantsin Salah. Since the Wahhabis are ignorant of

the Quran and the Sunnah, they can't com-prehend even the clear hadith text. The hadithclearly says that it is prohibited only whendone out of pride and conceit.

    CHAPTER III

From Chapter I and II it is clear that Prophet( )Prohibited wearing the garments whichhang below the ankles and also prohibitedfolding the clothes in Salah.

The Sunnah is to wear the pants that areabove the ankles and don't cover them. How-ever, if a person is wearing pants which coverthe ankles, should he fold it or leave it as it is?

According to Ahl us-Sunnah, the personshould leave the pants as it is and should notfold it because the prohibition of wearing gar-ments below the ankles is only when it is doneout of pride and ego.

The ahadith mentioned in chapter I clearlystate that this prohibition is applicable only tothe person who does it out of pride. Also, when the Prophet prohibited the below

ankle garments, Hazrat Abu Bakr came to theProphet and said that his Izar slips downdue to his stomach and covers the ankles. TheProphet said that it is fine as it is not doneout of pride or conceit.

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:The Prophet ( ( said Allah will not look, on the Day of

Resurrection at the person who drags his gar-ment (behind him) out of conceit. On that Abu Bakr said, "O Allah's Messenger !Oneside of my Izar hangs low if I do not take careof it." The Prophet said, 'You are not one of

    CHAPTER IV

Though it is clear from the ahadith that theprohibition of lowering the garment whichcovers the ankles, applies only to the people who do it for pride and conceit. In addition to

that, we cite a few references from the booksof the Jurists.

One of the most famous textal-Hidaya states:

i.e. And thegarment should not be folded as it is a kind ofconceit and pride. (Hidaya Awwalain, Page:101)Fatawa Alamgiri states:

    ,

It is disliked for amusalli to play with hisclothes or beard or body and folding ofclothes is also disliked, like lifting the clothesfrom the front or from the back while goingto sijdah, as stated in Meraj ud-Dari (Fatawa Alamgiri, Vol: 1, Page; 105)

Imam Ahmad Rida Khan writes, "It is(folding of clothes in Salah) indeed dislikedand strongly disliked. It is narrated in SihahSitta that the Prophet ( ( said, 'I have been

ordered to prostrate on seven bones and notto fold hairs and clothes.'"

Its in Sahihain that the Prophet ( ( said, "Ihave been commanded not to fold hairs and

    clothes."

Its written in all themutoon (major texts) ofjurisprudence:

i.e. folding the clothes is disliked.

Its in Fath ul-Qadeer& Bahr ur-Raiq : i.e. folding ofsleeves also comes under the folding of

    clothes ( (

In Durre Mukhtarit is stated that:

)Lifting of cloth is disliked even when it isdone to avoid the soiling, like folding thesleeves or the bottom wear) ,

    In Ghunyah:

  • 8/11/2019 Folding Pants in Salah

    23/25

It is disliked to fold/lift the clothes in Salah with minor actions (amal-e-qalil) such as lift-ing the cloth from front or from back while

going forSajdah or starting the Salah in sucha state that his sleeves and bottom garmentsare folded)( , )

So it is a must to unfold the sleeves and pray, even though he may miss arakat (in unfoldingthe sleeves) and if he prays without unfold-ing, then Salah is required to be repeated asevery Salah prayed withkarahat (dislike)should be repeated, as mentioned inDurreMukhtar etc.)(Fatawa Ridawiyah, Vol 7, Page53)

    Conclusion

The pants should be made such that it isabove ankle all the times.

If the pants covers the ankles it mustnot be folded (either from outside or

from inside) as it will make the Salahprohibitively disliked (mahrooh-e-tehreemi) and Salah will required to berepeated.

Similarly rolling up the sleeves and

tucking in the shirt is also disliked inSalah. Sleeves must be unrolled andshirt should be tucked out of pant inSalah.

and the absolute knowledge is with Almighty Allah.
