HyTight Assembly

Cleanability first – this is the guidelinefor the design of the LESER CleanService Safety Valves. Series 48X pro-vides an optimum of cleanability. Thefollowing design features represent theultimate solution for all critical cleanservice applications.

HyTight stands for Hygienic andTightness.

HyTight AssemblyThe aseptic O-ring disc is the “heart” ofthe series 48X. This unique design provides for the firsttime a really cleanable in- and outlet ofa safety valve:

The O-ring sealing provides superiortightness. The elastomer bellows protects thehard-to-clean parts in the guidingand bonnet area against contamina-tion. Please note: An elastomer bellows isnot back pressure compensatinglike a stainless steel bellows. All fixing elements like screws andnuts are placed inside of the bel-lows. Crevice free internals, rinsed O-ringsand FDA compliant elastomersinsure there are no bacteria traps.

Clean Service Safety Relief ValvesLow dead space

Low dead space

The dead space ratio is defined by ratioof the length of the inlet (L) to the dia-meter of the inlet pipe (D). The clean-ability is improved as this ratio isreduced.

Types 481, 483 and 488 are improvedsolutions for safety valves with Tri-Clamp® connections, and have L / Dratios less than 1.5 and 2.0 (Type 488).The requirements of ASME BPE 2002Part SD - 3.11.1 (L / D < 2.0) and FDA 21CFR Part 177.2600 (L / D < 1.5) are ful-filled with these designs.

For some applications especially in thepharmaceutical industry the require-ments are even higher. The solution forthese particularly high purity require-ments is Type 484 or Type 485 withspecial connections to the vessel orthe piping, providing L / D ratios as lowas 0.3.

Dead space Type 483, L / D ~ 1.5

Dead space Type 488, L / D ~ 2.0

Dead space Type 484, L / D ~ 0.3

The surface quality, especially areas incontact with product, greatly influen-ces the cleanability of the safety valve.

The ASME BPE-2002, -a- 2003, -a- 2004(Bioprocessing Equipment) states forcleanability:SD-3.1.1: ● All surfaces shall be cleanable.● Surface imperfections (e.g., crevices,

gouges, abvious pits, etc.) shall beeliminated whenever feasible.

To ensure that ASME BPE-2002,-a- 2003, -a- 2004 requirements arefulfilled, no castings are used in theLESER Clean Service series.High surface quality is achieved bymachining most valve bodies and allinternal parts from high quality barmaterial.

Clean Service Safety Relief Valves Lift Indicator

Series 48X

16

Lift indicators are a useful device forautomation. They are used to monitoroperating status. To detect lifting, LESER provides twodesigns incorporating a proximity switch:one with the proximity switch in the liftingdevice and the other with the proximityswitch in the bonnet (see drawingsbelow). The lift indicator will indicate a valve lift ofmore than 0.04 inch (1mm) due to over-pressure or operation of the lifting device.

LESER provides DC proximity switchestype “N” using two-wire technology. These intrinsically safe proximity swit-ches can be used in explosion hazardarea zone 0.

Other types of proximity switches maybe used. If a technical specification issupplied along with the type of con-nection thread LESER can verify com-patibility.

FAQ’s

What is the standard surface quality for all LESER clean service safety valves? The surface quality for LESER clean service safety valves depends on the valve type. Nevertheless, each Clean Servicesafety valve LESER offers complies with ASME BPE 2002, -a- 2003, -a- 2004.

Does LESER fulfil ASME BPE 2002, -a- 2003, -a- 2004 requirements?ASME BPE 2002 is a general guideline for design and construction of Clean Service Equipment. LESER follows this guide-line as well as DIN EN 1672-2 and fulfils the requirements of both.

What is FDA?FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is a federal science-based law enforcement agency in the USA mandated to protectpublic health and safety.

What does 21 CFR Part 177.2600 mean? This is a title of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (1938)21: title 21, Food and DrugsCFR: Code of Federal Regulations177.: Part “polymers”2600: section “elastomers”

Are the elastomer materials in a compliance with FDA?LESER certifies that the standard EPDM fitted directly into product contact parts of the Clean Service safety valves are inaccordance with the rules of the “Food and Drug Administration” (FDA) 21 CFR Part 177.2600: “Rubber articles intendedfor repeated use”. LESER is also able to supply FFKM (Kalrez®) and FKM (Viton®) in FDA compliant grades.

What does USP mean?United States Phamacopeia. Their vision is:“USP’s vision is to be a leader in promoting the public health by creating a unique knowledge base – consisting of qualitystandards and information on proper use – for medicines and related products and practices. USP will ensure that peoplethroughout the world have access to this knowledge base.”

What is the USP-NF?The United States Pharmacopeia – National Formulary (USP – NF) is a book of public pharmacopeial standards. It containsstandards for medicines, dosage forms, drug substances, excipients, medical devices, and dietary supplements. The cur-rent edition is USP29 – NF24

What is USP Class 6?In the USP “Chapter <88> Biological reactivity tests, in vivo” you can find a definition of test procedures for elastomers, which come in contact with humans and animals. There are 6 grades of test; the highest one is Class 6.Futhermore the “Chapter <87> Biological reactivity tests, in vitro” is relevant, which discribe tests about the cytotoxicity.

Which elastomer materials acc. to USP Class VI are available at LESER?LESER is able to supply EPDM, FKM (e.g. Viton®) and FFKM (e.g. ISOLAST® or Kalrez®) with manufacturer’s certificateacc. USP <87> cytotoxicity test and USP <88> Class VI.

What is 3A?3-A Sanitary Standards, Inc. (3-A SSI) is a non-profit association representing equipment manufacturers, processors, reg-ulatory sanitarians and other public health professionals. Through many decades of cooperation, these groups have estab-lished a comprehensive inventory of 3-A Sanitary Standards and 3-A Accepted Practices now known around the world fordairy and food processing equipment and systems.

What does EHEDG mean?EHEDG is the shortform for “European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group”The EHEDG provides guidance on the hygienic engineering aspects of manufacturing of safe and wholesome food.

What is EHEDG test? The EHEDG defines test methods for definition and examination of cleanability. The test methods are discribed in the following “Docs”: “Doc 2, A method for assessing the in-place cleanability of food processing equipment” or “Doc 15, A method for the assessment of in-place cleanability of moderately-sized food processing equipment“.The test can be performed at certified laboraties and is documented in an EHEDG Test certificate.Up to now there is only a low request for EHEDG tested safety valves. Nevertheless, LESER is able to perform these testsat any time.
