Supplies for Folded Star Program November 25, 2013.

Cut an 8 square for the foundation (this fabric will not show when the project is completed so use any fabric you want: muslin, unbleached cotton, an ugly scrap)

Cut a 10 square for the outside border

Cut 4 3 squares for the centre of the star (fabric A)

Cut 8 3 squares for the second row of the star (fabric B)

Cut 8 - 3 square for the third row of the star (fabric C)

Cut 8 3 squares for the fourth row of the star (fabric D)

You will also need:

thread in a colour to co-ordinate with your fabric, but if will not show

needle

pins, to hold prairie points in place until can be pressed

maybe a point turner of other smooth-sided implement to aid in folding before pressing

straight edge (for marking the backing fabric)

pencil or permanent marker (for marking the backing fabric it wont show when finished)

Make prairie points with each of the 3 squares:

Fold each square into a prairie point, by folding in half across the width. (raw edges are at the bottom of the photo)

Then fold the corners of the folded side down to the centre of the bottom of the square.

Press.

These instructions are from Fun and Fabulous Patchwork & Applique by Gail Lawther. The book is in the Woodlawn branch of the Halifax Public Libraries.

Folded stars can be made in any size. The size of the prairie points can be varied and the number of rows. They could be used to make a larger round placemat, a small mug rug or even a pot holder. They can be pieced into a quilt top or wall hanging or used to make a pillow as shown above.
