ENGLISH VO: This is the set of Fokus Deutsch, a German language telecourse. And this is Robert Di Donato, Professor of German at Miami University in Ohio. He has been teaching German for more than 25 years.

PROFESSOR: Was man sagt, wenn man jemandem...

PROFESSOR VO:

People think - when they hear the name Di Donato - well, why is someone with the name Di Donato teaching a German course?

I'm not a native speaker of German but I think that what is very good about my not being a native speaker is the fact that I can provide students with a role model. I've gone through a

lot of the hurdles that these students are going through, and that learners of German go through. So I'm particularly aware of difficulties in language structure, in vocabulary, that students might have.

1:29ENGLISH VO:

This is Marion Koslowski, a student from Germany whom Bob has brought to the United States to help teach the telecourse.

PROFESSOR: Hallo, Marion! Schön, Sie wiederzusehen.

MARION: Guten Tag, Herr Professor.

MARION: Ohne mich!

ENGLISH VO: Her story is featured throughout the series.

VERA: Na endlich!

ENGLISH VO: In the early programs of Fokus Deutsch we learn about her family and their lives.

PROFESSOR VO:

Marion and I together begin to write the Fokus Deutsch course.

MARION: ... und für die Seele.

PROFESSOR VO:

After a while Marion herself kind of takes over.

MARION: ... abenteuerlich und romantisch.

PROFESSOR: I liked working with Marion a lot and I liked working with her for a number of reasons. One of the reasons is she's a very creative person.

MARION: Ich hab's, ich hab's. Ja, ich glaub ich hab's.

PROFESSOR: Wo gehen Sie denn hin?

MARION: Hier. Ein Zitat. Tiefe Stille....

2:42PROFESSOR

VO:

And the thing is I'm not always sure the course is going in the right direction.

MARION: ....bestehen doch aus Konflikten, oder?

PROFESSOR: But I want Marion to have a little free reign with this. When she goes too far in some direction then sometimes she makes me nervous. I have to say stop, that's enough, and pull her back a little bit.

PROFESSOR: Das stimmt. Das stimmt. Aber es fehlt dieser Geschichte das gewisse Etwas. Darf ich einige Vorschläge machen?

Fokus Deutsch is a series of 24 video programs accompanied by print and audio materials. The series presents dramas produced in Germany, documentaries of contemporary German life, interviews with native speakers of German and historical and archival footage.

Professor Di Donato, with assistance from Marion,weaves these elements into a language learning course with a German studies approach.

PROFESSOR: Oh, schon so spät, Marion. Ich muss los. Tut mir leid. Auf Wiedersehen.

PROFESSOR: What you see when you watch Fokus Deutsch is a series of programs. Each program is a half an hour long, and within that half an hour are two episodes. Each episode is fifteen minutes long.

4:19PROFESSOR

VO:

At the beginning of each of the episodes we preview the upcoming drama and what we end up doing is also giving you a preview of the communicative expressions that you might want to look out for in each of the episodes.

ENGLISH VO: How the secretary apologizes for interrupting.

SECRETARY: Entschuldigen Sie die Störung, Herr Direktor.

PROFESSOR VO:

After that we show the drama, and right after the drama we review both the communicative functions and the content of the drama itself. Often the review that we do has words on screen.

5:02PROFESSOR:

We have a lot of different stories in Fokus Deutsch. Marion's story is only one of the stories that we have. People identify with the stories of other people and people want to follow their stories. They get involved with the characters. They get involved with all of the issues these people are confronting and all the problems these people are grappling with. As I said Marion's story is only one story among all of these, and her story is a very complicated one.

5:32ENGLISH VO:

Marion's story begins in the first drama of the series. Don't worry if you don't understand every word. Just try to follow as well as you can. Heinz Koslowski, Marion's father, is a former steel worker. He's been unemployed for half a year. Although he has unemployment benefits, he is concerned. He desperately wants a job to support his family - his wife Vera, his son Lars, and Marion.

A neighbor complains that no one needs old steelworkers. The only recourse is unemployment benefits or moving away. Heinz's wife tells him the Schuberts, another family in the neighborhood, moved away because they couldn't find work. She shows him an ad for work in another city, Cologne, or Köln in German. Heinz is not enthusiastic.

HEINZ: Das ist doch nicht dein Ernst?

MARION: Na wie war's?

HEINZ: Wie immer. Nichts!

VERA: Und? Wie war's heute?

HEINZ: Nichts! "Für eine Vermittlung sind Sie zu alt."

VERA: Wir schaffen das schon! Du und ich! Ich kauf noch was zum Abendessen.

9:27HEINZ:

Guck mich an, Emma: Ich bin zu alt.

KARL: Na Heinz...

HEINZ: Tagchen, Karl. Auf dem Arbeitsamt war wieder nichts. Stahlarbeiter braucht man heut nicht mehr.

KARL: Und für eine Vermittlung zu alt! Ich kenn das. Bleibt nur das Arbeitslosengeld. Oder wegziehen!

HEINZ: Auch wenn wir's nicht schaffen, du kommst nicht in den Topf! Emma!

Hallo Papa!

HEINZ: Hast do Fussball gespielt?

LARS:

VERA: Lars, wie siehst du denn wieder aus?!

LARS: 5:1 gewonnen!

HEINZ: Ist Marion noch nicht zurück?

LARS: Ich weiss wo die ist. Die hab ich mit Rüdiger am Sportplatz gesehen.

VERA: Übrigens, die Schuberts ziehen weg.

HEINZ: Ja ja, so weit ist es schon gekommen. Werner zieht vielleicht auch bald weg.

VERA: Wegziehen. Wegziehen!

HEINZ: Was hat sie denn?

11:57 I think in learning a language it's the people who are really the most important because it's through them that we actually learn the language. It's the people who are the bearers of culture and the people who are the bearers of history and they're the ones that make it come alive for us. And when we follow their individual stories or when we listen to them, when we listen to them and when we see them even historically, that's when we really can learn about German culture, that's when we can learn about German history.

INTRO DOCUMENTARIES

12:33GERMAN VO:

In Heidelberg am Neckar befindet sich eine der ältesten Universitäten Deutschlands.

PROFESSOR VO:

Among the elements of Fokus Deutsch we have a number of documentaries and some of these documentaries are historical...

... and some of them focus on present day Germany.

GERMAN VO: Monika Schneider sucht auch den direkten Kontakt zu den Unternehmen. Wenn ein Betrieb eine freie Stelle beim Arbeitsamt meldet, fährt Monika Schneider dorthin...

PROFESSOR VO:

One of the documentaries that I like very much focuses on a grandmother named Meta Heyn and her relating of the family history to her granddaughter Sybille Heyn.

GERMAN VO: Als Meta Heyn geboren wurde, regierte in Deutschland Kaiser Wilhelm.

INTRO NATIVE INFORMANTS

13:20PROFESSOR:

We also bring into Fokus Deutsch a number of native speakers of German. We have native speakers from Germany, from Austria and from Switzerland.

GÜRKAN: Touristisch gesehen, die Türkei bietet sehr viel Attraktives.

PROFESSOR: One of the native speakers that I am thinking of right now is Gürkan. Gürkan was actually born in Turkey, has lived most of his life in Germany and provides a wonderful perspective from the Turkish-German standpoint.

ERIKA: Die Freizeit ist etwas schwierig wenn man ein Künstler ist.

PROFESSOR VO:

Erika is from Berlin and she was a child during the second World War in Germany and so her perspective is colored by many of the experiences that she had growing up as a child during that period in Germany.

GRACE: Normalerweise am Wochenende schlaf ich bis in die Puppen.

14:18PROFESSOR:

Grace was born in Germany. Her father is Zimbabwean, her mother is German and Grace gives us a wonderful perspective on the multicultural development of Germany.

VO:

When I first saw Marion in the drama, I thought this would be the person, this would be a wonderful person to help me teach German. And when I brought Marion here to the United States and got to know her a little bit I thought that she - I thought that I sort of was getting to know her very well. She's turned out to be however a little more complicated individual than I thought.

MARION: Für mich?

PA: Ja.

MARION: Ja bitte? Was ist los?

PROFESSOR VO:

There are some things going on with Marion that I quite frankly don't understand sometimes.
