me. As a good British citizen I will not be taking the valuable time of our UKBA with my request as the
following gives me the answer. I wanted to put this whole we need to crackdown on spouse visas because
of sham marriage question to bed - so I have the answer. In 2011 only 87 convictions were made on
"sham marriages" putting that into context then if the approximate non EEA immigration total wasroughly 250,000 and spouse visas only account for 3% so if we say roughly of the 7,500 spouse visas
granted in 2011 only 87 were exposed and convicted as sham marriage. So basically the government and
the gutter press are banging on about 1% of the total spouse visas given out being sham. ‘

Damian Green asserted on 15 September 2011 in a speech widely
reported in the press that there had been 155 arrests in sham
marriage cases in the previous year.
Please disclose the number of criminal convictions in connection
with sham marriages in the following years along with the criminal
law under which the conviction was obtained:
1. 2010
2. 2011

Dear Colin Yeo,
Thank you for your e mail of 16th January 2012 in which you asked for the following
information,
“Damian Green asserted on 15 September 2011 in a speech widely reported in the
press that there had been 155 arrests in sham marriage cases in the previous year.
Please disclose the number of criminal convictions in connection with sham
marriages in the following years along with the criminal law under which the
conviction was obtained:
1. 2010
2. 2011
Your request has been handled as a request for information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000.
The 155 arrests refer to arrests made during a specific enforcement campaign and
are not representative of arrests made for the whole of 2010. From data held there
have been the following numbers of convictions in connection with marriage abuse
cases:
January 2011- December 2011- 229
January 2010- December 2010 - 87
