Thank you for your e mail of 16th January 2012 in which you asked for the following

information,

“Damian Green asserted on 15 September 2011 in a speech widely reported in the

 press that there had been 155 arrests in sham marriage cases in the previous year.

Please disclose the number of criminal convictions in connection with sham

marriages in the following years along with the criminal law under which the

conviction was obtained:

Your request has been handled as a request for information under the Freedom of

The 155 arrests refer to arrests made during a specific enforcement campaign and

are not representative of arrests made for the whole of 2010. From data held there

have been the following numbers of convictions in connection with marriage abuse
