A fun day out for the whole family

It’s Hollowell Steam & Heavy Horse Show’s 30th Anniversary this year. Started by Allen Eaton MBE to raise money for the Church Restoration Fund, it has grown from needing a 12-acre site to over 100

acres including car parks and camp site. One and a half million pounds has been raised to date, last year being a record, with £102,000 donated to charities and good causes.

To commemorate the occasion there will be a William Allchin Special Display. Their Globe Works was opened in 1847 at Cotton End, Northampton, upgrading in 1872 to produce Steam Rollers and Wagons for road transport, equipment for the boot and shoe industry and saw benches and threshing machines for farming. We have 12 full size Allchin steamers and miniatures booked to attend the rally, along with Allchin equipment and memorabilia. A rare Allchin portable engine is for sale at our Saturday Auction.

Here are just some of the things going on over the weekend in the arena; we have Heavy Horses – see

the Heavy Horses pulling a variety of carriages, and carts. Invitation Steering – you or your children can steer a 14-ton Steam Engine around the ring under supervision – at 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Steam Engines – over 40 magnificent steam engines will parade around the ring. Vintage Vehicles – a selection of vintage vehicles will parade around the main arena – Tractors, Cars, Lorries and Buses, Motor Bikes, Military Vehicles and more. Events correct at time of going to print.

Hollowell Steam is a family show with a full days entertainment for all ages. Food and drink of all descriptions is readily available.

Events to enjoy at Stowe this Summer

Stowe House is one of the most magnificent stately homes in the country and this Summer it will be the setting for a host of events for all the family. Enjoy a picnic in the grounds

of Stowe – a splendid backdrop for comic renditions of Shakespeare and the magical menagerie of Dr Longitude.

Stowe celebrates the 300th Anniversary and the immense legacy of Capability Brown in a lecture series hosted in association with The National Trust.

Music events include firm favourites Rance’s Rockin’ Chair on 8 June, Flekd blend delicate textures and weaving melodies with driving grooves and improvisations on 15 June, The combined might of Brass Bands from Towcester and Brackley support Armed Forces Day in a concert with a military theme on 25 June, and on 16 July the State Music Room provides the ultimate setting for an evening of Jazz with Tina May and friends. The annual unmissable feast of joi de vivre from Opera della Luna features a crazy double bill for just two nights of 23 & 24 July.

Shakespeare in the grounds of Stowe by the inimitable troupe of players The HandleBards sees a rib-tickling Much Ado about Nothing on 17 June and a rip-roaring Richard III the following evening on 18 June. Enjoy a stunning view during your pre-show picnics.

Les Enfants Terribles return to Stowe to perform a double bill in the grounds of The National Trust on 19 July. Roll up, roll up for Dr Longitude’s Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie and The Fantastical Flying Exploratory Laboratory.

Celebrating our canal heritage

A fun packed programme of boats, canal crafts, food, drink, live music, stalls, dance and children’s activities will keep the whole family entertained at Stoke Bruerne’s

Annual Family Festival on the 18th-19th June. Centred on the Canal Museum and the Grand Union Canal, the Festival will celebrate our waterways heritage with a host of canal craft demonstrators including ‘Roses and Castle’ painters, rag rug makers, lace and crochet makers, wood carvers, sign writers, fender makers, a stained glass artist and Stoke Bruerne’s very own blacksmith who will be giving demonstrations at his canalside forge.

Working and historic boats will be there in abundance joined by a variety of trading boats and for those who want to get afloat there will be a chance to take a boat trip on “Indian Chief” or “Charlie” into the famous 1¾ mile long 200 year old Blisworth Tunnel. Want to learn how to construct a canal bridge or tie dragon fly knots? Stoke Bruerne is the place to come. All-in-all expect an activity-packed weekend for families with plenty to interest everybody. It's a free entry event, with car parking in the village car parks charged at £5 per car all day. It's all in aid of a good cause – any money raised is donated to the Friends of The Canal Museum Charity (reg. no. 1121146), a volunteer group supporting the Canal Museum. What better way could there be to spend a Summer weekend than messing about beside the water?

Open air live music at Pattishall this Summer

Pattishall Picnic in the Park Music Festival and Craft Fair returns for the third year on Saturday 2 July, bigger and better than ever. Every musical taste will be catered for with bands and

musicians playing from early afternoon to late evening providing pop and rock covers as well as traditional Jazz, Towcester Studio Brass Band, Ska, Pedrock, Barn Dancing, Original and Folk.

The festival is organised by the committees that run the Pattishall Parish Hall and Fields charities, where the event is held. Their aim is to raise enough money to refurbish the Hall’s car park soon.

As in previous years there will be a professional stage, lighting, speakers, with sound engineer and crew enabling bands to provide high quality music as listeners enjoy the sunshine in the beautiful South

Northants countryside. Bring gazebos, fold up chairs and picnic blankets for your comfort.

Food available will include Indian cuisine, freshly made oven pizza, special recipe sausages and more; beer tent with Gun Dog Ales, Pimms and Prosecco. There will be activities for children, as well as play equipment, bouncy castle and more. Inside there will be a craft fair with wide range of goods for sale.

Michelin chef to star at Towcester Food Festival

Michelin star chef Phil Fanning will kick off the chef demonstrations at Towcester Food Festival, taking place on June 11 and 12.

Phil owns and runs Paris House, the fabled restaurant set in 22 acres of parkland at the

Duke of Bedford’s estate in Woburn.He was awarded his Michelin star at the age of 29 and is described as ‘one of the brightest culinary talents in Britain’.He said: “I’m really looking forward

to being involved. I’ve always found food festivals to be hugely enjoyable and

inspirational events.”Phil tops a line-up of great local chefs taking part in the hourly free chef demonstrations that run through the festival weekend.Masterchef judge and food critic William Sitwell will open the festival and tour the stands on Saturday morning looking for the best local produce.

Among the traders in the street food market is Seadog Foods, who won the Best of the Best accolade at the British Street Food Awards with their “amazing seafood”.Towcester Food Festival is a celebration of Artisan food and drink with more than 100 food and drink stalls, free wine and gin tasting sessions, cookery classes for kids, free chef demonstrations, live music, a family circus and a world street food market.It takes place at Towcester Racecourse on Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12 and is open from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday. 150g dark chocolate

225g light muscovado sugar

50g cocoa powder

100g plain flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp coffee granules

3 eggs

200g raspberries

50g milk chocolate, roughly chopped

Method1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC, gas mark 4, and line a 20cm square baking tin with baking parchment.

2. Gently melt the butter, dark chocolate and sugar together in a saucepan, stirring until well mixed, then remove from the heat.

3. Add the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder and coffee granules to the mixture, and combine. Then gradually beat in the eggs.

4. Add the raspberries and chopped milk chocolate, and stir in.

5. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, and bake for 20–25 minutes until set but still with a bit of give in the centre. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely. Cut into 16 squares to serve.

Timely advice for dog owners

Canine Babesiosis is not recognised as a common disease within the UK, however at least two confirmed cases were reported earlier this year.

Babesiosis is a serious tick-borne parasitic disease caused by a single celled parasite called Babesia. The most common mode of transmission is by ticks. Babesia lives inside the tick and uses it as a mode of transport to reach and infect dogs. When the tick bites a dog Babesia enters the dog’s body and starts its infection. A tick typically needs to be attached to a dog for 24-48 hours to successfully transmit the disease. The parasite infects and replicates in the red blood cells, leading to red cell destruction and causing anaemia. The incubation period averages about 2 weeks. Signs can be acute or chronic and can include fever, anaemia, red urine and jaundice. Diagnosis is made on blood testing.

The condition is treatable and prognosis is generally good if treatment is started early.

The common Babesia species affecting dogs do not cause disease in humans.Dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors especially in wooded areas are at an increased risk of tick bites. This is especially true in the Summer months when tick populations are highest.There is no vaccination against Babesia available for dogs in the UK. However, being vigilant about tick protection and removal of any attached ticks with a tick hook is the best method for avoiding the onset of Babesiosis. YCountyConnect is a new type of bus service brought to you by Northamptonshire County Council working with Lincolnshire County Council and Centrebus. It is a service that you can use for any reason you need to travel. The service goes where and when you want within the designated areas.

The timetable is designed around you! The specially designed buses are easy to see. They o�er easy access allowing wheelchairs on board and there is plenty of space for shopping and luggage. The buses will be fitted with seat belts for passenger safety.

County Connect will take you to or from any designated pick-up point to any other in each village or town. More rural locations are also served if it is safe to do so. You can go from village to village as well as to your local town. You are able to connect to regular bus services that will take you longer distances.

There is no fixed timetable as it changes every day, so you need to pre-book. The bus cannot pick you up without a booking.

YCountyConnect is a new type of bus service brought to you by Northamptonshire County Council working with Lincolnshire County Council and Centrebus. It is a service that you can use for any reason you need to travel. The service goes where and when you want within the designated areas.

The timetable is designed around you! The specially designed buses are easy to see. They o�er easy access allowing wheelchairs on board and there is plenty of space for shopping and luggage. The buses will be fitted with seat belts for passenger safety.

County Connect will take you to or from any designated pick-up point to any other in each village or town. More rural locations are also served if it is safe to do so. You can go from village to village as well as to your local town. You are able to connect to regular bus services that will take you longer distances.

There is no fixed timetable as it changes every day, so you need to pre-book. The bus cannot pick you up without a booking.

You can phone, email or text our dedicated booking team.

Bookings can be made up to an hour before you need to travel (subject to availability) and up to a week in advance. It is ‘first come first served’, so the more notice you give, the more likely you are to get your requested booking.

Angling club seeks new members

Towcester & District Angling Association (TDAA)are always looking for new members. With four local still waters, two stretches of Canal and parts of the River Tove there’s plenty of

action to be had. All waters hold a variety of fish including Roach, Tench, Perch, Chub, big Carp and Pike just to name a few. TDAA has just recently celebrated its 80th annual AGM and hopes to complete a further eighty years with the help and support from all local fisherman.

The friendly club will appeal to every angler from the match person through to the pleasure angler

and they also like to encourage youngsters to

try out what angling is all about. At the “come and

have a go session”(12-16 years) which are held often, it�s free

Let’s get ready for the 14th Midsummer Music Festival. The Rotary, Centurions and Lions clubs of Towcester are combining once again to put on a

weekend of ‘Music for All’, which will be hosted by the Mayor.

The Saturday event will be presented at no less than 13 separate locations, all within a short distance of the Market Square. There will also be music on Friday night and Sunday.

On Saturday, the entertainment will commence in the Market Square. Elsewhere, the musical programme will generally run from 7.30pm until, depending on the venue, 10.00 or 11.00pm. The Saturday evening will reach its finale with a firework display from Bury Mount, starting at 10.30pm.

Admission will be by programme and this will give

admission to all of the venues – and there will be many choices. You will be encouraged to visit as many events as you like. There will be performances at different venues throughout the centre of the Town from local and visiting artistes. There will be the Brass, Choral, Folk, Rock, Pop, Guitar and Harp instrumentals and Jazz bands. Many of the venues will serve food and drink.

Programmes will be on sale (£18 Family; £7 Adult; £5 Concession) at a number of locations from the end of May.

Local cyclists pushing hard for honours

Former Sponne School pupils Hannah and Alice Barnes are living the dream. Making a career out of their hobby. Hannah last year in the Women's tour won the last stage in Hemel

Hempstead finishing the tour 5th overall. She was also best young rider and best British rider.

This year she is riding for her new German team Canyon Sram. The team were the victors last year and Hannah hopes this will be the case again this year. Her progress may not be quite so easy this year. She crashed in a race in America last August breaking the talus bone in her ankle.

A long healing progress meant 5 months off her bike. She is now racing

and training again. She lives in Girona in Spain which gives her the weather and the mountains to help her regain her former fitness.Alice is in the British Cycling Mountain Bike Academy. Sadly Great Britain have not qualified a Mountain Biker for the Olympics so Alice's coach has decided to focus her mountain climbing ability to aim for a place on the Olympic road team. The Rio course is very hilly and this terrain will suit Alice's strengths. It does look like Alice and Hannah may be competing for the same spot on the Olympic team which could be a little awkward.Alice and Hannah should both be riding in the women's tour this year. Alice who is National under 23 road race champion has just signed for a new team "drops". The last stage on Sunday 19th June will start in Northampton and travels South to the Towcester area and then heads North finishing in Kettering.

Midsummer Beer Festival, Wappenham

Wappenham villagers hold a third Beer and Music Festival on Saturday June 25th. It's at the Village Hall, from noon until late, with real ales, cider

and a table of gins on offer, plus wine and soft drinks, a barbecue and live music.

The bands include: Off The Hook, Silver Connection, the Brackley and Buckingham Rock Choir and musicians from the Towcester Rock School.

Beers will include Towcester Mill, Great Oakley, Oakham Ales, Gundog, Phipps

and Hook Norton, however more are likely to be added.

Advance tickets are available for £7, which for 3 pints is a bargain. Entry on the day is free, but buying tickets

before the event will help the organisers decide on catering, so please do get your

tickets now if you can. Buy them from Michael or Paul on 01327 860373 or Jim on 01327 860915.

Festival proceeds will be in aid of maintaining our two loved village buildings - the Church and the Hall, and the Friends of Danetre Hospital, to help them buy much-needed equipment.

Alan Muxlow’s tips for your gardenIt’s Summer - remember to water!

An absolute fundamental as the weather warms up is watering. Give your plants and shrubs a massive drink once or twice a week to help roots deepen into the soil.

Be careful about water conservation. A water butt is essential in this day and

age. They are easy to find in your local DIY shop.

A bit of a quirky one! Instead of throwing away cooking water, spread it over the plants – the nutrients from the food help fight infectious bacteria that attack your plants!

And… remember the birds!First, if you are going to cut the hedges, or any larger shrubs, have a search amongst the branches for nesting birds looking after their babies is an important part of gardening, as they contribute to the Eco system of the garden by eating many of the insects that, in turn, eat your plants.

The Winter is not the only time to feed the birds – often they need more help in the Summer than they do in the cold months, mostly because the ground can get very hard in hot weather, making it difficult to find worms. Put some bird food out to complement their diet and help them build-up strength for the Winter.

Birds really enjoy splashing about on hot days, so why not buy a bird bath? Incidentally, if you were to come to Alan Muxlow’s Landscape Centre, you would see our fantastic reclaimed bird baths!

Making a cup of tea? Make it camomile! Oh, and make a little extra for the plants! Make sure it’s cooled nicely, then water the plants with it – the natural nutrients in camomile fight off the nasty bacterial and fungal infections that can attack your seedlings.

British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone

The insanely fast Silverstone British Grand Prix is held this year from 8th until 10th July 2016.

This year’s event features not only the high speed races but also an abundance of other

entertainment to keep you occupied.

The headline act are Texas who will be on stage during the opening night on Friday 8th July for those of you who like to stay up late and enjoy a boogie!

Or maybe you prefer to soar high up in the sky rather than burning tarmac? Then you can book a pleasure

flight in a helicopter on Friday 8th July and Saturday 9th July from Silverstone’s very own Heliport.

Could the race be won this year by one of our local drivers, Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg? With both drivers based just down the road in Brackley at Mercedes AMG Pertronas F1 Team, it should be an interesting acceleration to the finish line!

The last consecutive two races at Silverstone have been won by Lewis Hamilton with Nico Rosberg winning in 2013 and Mark Webber in 2012.

From 1963 – 1971 the British Grand Prix was dominated by British drivers with Jim Clark winning for 3 consecutive years in the Lotus Climax, then Jackie Stewart took over the winning streak taking the chequered flag in 1969 and 1970 racing for Cosworth.

Whether you are spectating from Maggotts Corner, Chapel Curve and Hangar Straight or from home, let’s cheer along all the drivers and wish them all the best of luck with the race and the British weather!Nico Rosberg racing in Russia.
