s the mercury drops we all turn to comfort

food and Wellingtons at Cherry Lane

Garden Centre have introduced a

wholesome menu for the winter months

with some festive fayre for the Christmas holidays.

From a hearty cooked breakfast or piping

hot soup followed by cottage pie the

new caf and bistro is already

proving popular with more than

just the customers for the garden

centre itself. Owner Tom Vincent

expanded we see a lot of mums

meeting after the school run, plenty

of people using the WiFi on laptops

and lots of groups of people meeting

up for lunch or afternoon tea, it really is

a big mix. The menu is about relatively simple food,

cooked from fresh ingredients, we even pick our own

fruit from trees in the garden, that really is locally

sourced produce. Weve plenty of room and have

become a little hub for people charring over a coffee

and some cake.

With the festive season around the corner Wellingtons

have also introduced a Christmas Menu thats packed

with traditional favourites and still leaves plenty of

spend for presents. Christmas is a traditional holiday

and we like to uphold those traditions continues

Tom it shouldnt cost the earth to get together and

celebrate and we like to keep our menu prices in line

with the rest of the year.

So as the wool coats and winter shoes make an

appearance its a good time to pop down to Cherry

Lane Garden Centre at Potterspury for something

warming this winter.

Consider pets when

handling antifreeze

N

ow the cold weather is upon us,

you may be preparing your car

for winter. Did you know that

antifreeze can be deadly to

our pets?

Ethylene glycol (sometimes known as

ethanediol) is found in many products

such as screen wash and brake fluid

as it prevents freezing. It is also found in

engine coolants. It is a particularly high risk to pets as

have been exposed to antifreeze contact

a vet as soon as possible (even if they are

showing no symptoms). The sooner treatment

is given the more likely it is to be successful.

and breathing problems can be seen. Kidney failure

is also possible and makes recovery much less likely.

Unfortunately a lot of pets that are poisoned by

antifreeze do not survive.

So, when handling antifreeze this winter please be

extremely careful to store it safely away from pets and

clean up any spills immediately, making sure no pets

can access the area until clean.

orthamptonshire Sport is

currently launching the 2014

Workplace Challenge and

is asking staff to sign up

and get involved in the competition.

Aimed at organisations across Northamptonshire, the

initiative promotes a more active lifestyle which offers

innovative methods and workplace competitions to

stay active.

The main part of the Workplace Challenge is the

Activity Log - a free challenge to log your levels

of sport, physical activity and active travel online.

The more activity you do, the more points you get.

Competing with other organisations across the county,

prizes are offered to organisations and individuals

with the most points. You don't have to be a budding

athlete to take part; you can make small and simple

changes like cycling or walking to work, or getting off

the bus one stop earlier than usual.

Other elements of the Workplace

Challenge initiatives include the

Competition Programme, which

is a series of inter-workplace

sporting competitions for you to

take part in throughout the year.

All events will be low cost, with no

experience necessary and have an emphasis on fun!

The Business Games makes up the final part of

the Workplace Challenge. Businesses from across

Northamptonshire will be able to take part in a range

of team sports alongside a series of fun sporting

challenges over one evening event.

Towcester has its

own Brass Band?

A

t the turn of the century, Ada and

Charlotte Phipps, daughters of the

Towcester brewery owner, built and

equipped The Studio, a club where young

men could pursue art, woodcarving, sport and other

activities. In 1910 Charlotte acquired a set of brass

instruments and thus Towcester Studio Band was born.

The studio closed in 1912 but the Band continued

under William J. Bell. During the 1939-1945 War,

the instruments were loaned to RAF Silverstone for use

by the Station Band. In 1947, William Bell reformed

the band. Thanks to sound financial management in

1958, the band moved into its own custom built band

room in Bransons Lane, where it still resides today.

William Scholes was the bands first professional

Musical Director from 1963-1980. By 1977 the Band

Martyn Brabbins, formerly a member of the Youth

Band, was MD from 1980-1984. Martyn is now a

world-renowned conductor of orchestras and opera.

Peter Wain followed as Musical Director 1985-1998.

With Peter, the Band achieved a major ambition by

playing in the Royal Albert Hall and toured Europe.

The Band enjoyed playing under the baton-ship of

several successful conductors and is currently directed

by Kevin Steward.
