Life at TowcesterPrimary School

Mr Camp started at Towcester Primary 3 yearsago in September 2011 after 7 years ashead in another county school. We caughtup with him and posed a few questions.

What's your average day?I usually arrive at school at around 7.15am, and startmy emails then try and make sure that I am on theplayground to talk to parents and pupils at 8.30am.I also try and stand on the playground at 3.30pm at theend of the day. I usually leave school at around 5.45pm.

I feel that it is important for the Headteacher to be seenby the pupils and parents at the beginning and end of theday. I enjoy talking to the pupils and asking them whatthey have been doing. By being on the playground, Ihope that it makes me more accessible to the parents.

What three words would you useto describe Towcester Primary?Exciting, Aspirational and Stimulating. We offer aneducation that is broad and balanced with a wide rangeof opportunities for all pupils to access.

I think that a good school comes fromhaving a strong team and a collective

vision from all the parts of the schoolcommunity including, staff, governors,

parents, pupils and the wider community.

All membersof the schoolcommunity aretreated as equalsand shownrespect and have a voice. All staff are very caring andthe pupils feel happy talking to any member of staff.

Tell us about some of the changes atTowcester Primary recently…I think that the biggest change that has occurred at theschool is the changing perception of the school withinthe local community. I feel that we are making headwaywith this change and that more people are seeingTowcester Primary as a viable alternative school becauseof its friendly open nature and stimulating environment.

The chance to rent out a second property or room inyour home and earn some extra money sounds likean opportunity not to be missed. You may alreadybe doing this… but are you declaring the income?

HMRC are cracking down on over 1 million buy-to-let andother private landlords who are not declaring their rentalincome.

The ‘Let Property’ Campaign encourages landlords to‘bring tax affairs up to date’ voluntarily. Failure to do socould result in higher penalties and possibly prosecution.

What should be declared?Property rental income - if more than £2,500 a year.If less than £2,500, call HMRC and ask for form P810.

Lodger in your home – more than£4,250 a year (£2,125 if split jointly).

Some expenses for rental properties are allowable,ie repairs, letting agent fees, council tax.However, only the interest for the mortgageis allowable, not capital repayments.

How will HMRC know?HMRC can discover if someone is letting a property by:

• Checking Land Registry data• Searching their own database to highlight taxpayers

who may be likely to own second properties• Looking at authorised tenant deposit protection schemes

– these include data about the landlord• Information from banks regarding mortgages advanced

to landlords• Landlord registers held by local councils• Private letting advertisements.

Indulge yourself withthis tasty cupcake recipeA delicious light chocolate cupcake,sure to satisfy any sweet tooth fromAngelina Cupcake.

For the Chocolate Cupcakes• Preheat the oven to 175°C and line

2 muffin tins with large cupcake liners.

• In a large bowl incorporate all of the dry ingredientstogether with a whisk.

• In a jug mix all of the wetingredients together.

• Add wet to dry and whisk until nolumps remain.

• Pour the batter into the cupcake cupsso they are three quarters full andbake for about 20-25 minutes, untilthey are springy to the touch or a testerinserted in the centre comes out clean.

• Cool the cupcakes in the tins for10 minutes then turn on to a rack tocool fully.


Chocolate cupcakes(makes 24)375g plain flour400g caster sugar45g cocoa9g bicarbonate of soda6g salt160ml rapeseed/veg/sunflower oil30ml white distilled vinegar10ml vanilla extract475ml water

For the Chocolate Frosting• Melt the chocolate in a microwave bowl at 30 second

intervals, mixing in between until no pieces remain. Leave tocool slightly.

• Beat the butter in a stand mixer (or with hand mixer) until soft.

• Add the sugar, milk and vanilla and stir gently to incorporate(I use the mixer paddle for this).

• Pour the chocolate into the butter cream and mix on slow fora few seconds.

• Mix on medium high speed for a good 6-7 minutes untilfrosting is light and fluffy.

Iknow it sounds a little premature but late Augustand September is the time to start thinking aboutplanning and planting your Spring 2015 floweringbulbs. They have just been harvested in the fields

out in East Anglia and Holland and are now comingonto the market, daffodils, narcissus, tulips, allium,crocus, snowdrops, muscari, etc.

These bulbs will cause a riot of colour in your gardenin the spring from February to April /May. Chooseyour colour scheme and required flowering time andget planting. If August and September are very dry theground may be hard so wait for some rain to softenthe ground before digging and planting the bulbs.The top of the planted bulb should be a bulb depthfrom the surface of the soil. and wait until spring. There is no need to water themin. They will sit there until the ground warms in thenew year.

As I write these gardening tips the temperature is28 degrees Centigrade. This level of heat putsmassive pressure on the plants to survive. Make surethat plants, especially newly planted ones are keptwatered and fed. After watering cover the shrub bedwith a mulch, bark mulch or even grass clippings, thiswill stop the water evaporating from the soil. Cuttingback a plant in very hot weather will also help it tosurvive. If you see yellowing of some plant leaves thisis a sure sign of stress, if its dry pile on the water.
