It is with great pleasure we welcome you to our annual spring bull sale. It has been a fantastic winter in the cattle business with the warm weather as well as a strong cattle market. The Hereford breed has been making a resurgance across North America. As feed prices increase, increased efficiency will become much more important to your bottom line. Simply put, Herefords are tremendously good at converting feed into pounds. They add softness and doability on every kind of cow they are bred to.

Our bulls this year are an exciting group as the new sires have bred exceptionally well. This sale will be your only opportunity in Canada to add the influence of the popular 719T and HH Advance 8203.

As always it is great to work with our friends at Wheatland again, as they bring forth a super group of bulls.

If we can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to call either Allan or myself. Be sure to join us for refreshments after the sale.

See you sale day!

A full brother to 66Y. Very similar in type to his brother. This bull is square hipped and really sound made. The 143T donor is awesome and stamps all her calves with tremendous style and pattern. This calf’s recipient mother wasn’t quite a good as his full brother’s and he is a little behind in his condition. This young sire has unlimited potential. Don’t miss out on a really good bull. If you are looking for a bull to show this summer and fall or need to add some style and power to your calf crop, you need to study this guy. Huge hip, exceptionally long sided, cool necked and upheaded. He stands on a powerful leg with a big foot. He has plenty of turn to his top and shape to his rib and is really deep sided. This bull will sire cattle that can hit the showring. A full sister was a Reserve Division winner at the Denver Junior show for Bailey Buck and Buck Cattle Company, Madill, OK. Maternal Brother to Lots 5 & 6.We would be interested in developing this bull for the upcoming World Conference if the new owner wishes. Owned by Allan Hjertaas and Riley Lafrentz

Welcome to the Wheatland Annual Bull Sale. Once again they will have on offer one of the strongest sets of those good haired, meat and muscle kind of perspective herd bulls. Wheatland have influenced the Simmental breed as much as any program in the country. They have placed herd bulls into top commercial and purebred programs across Canada and into the USA. The bulls on offer for 2012 will be the kind to strongly influence the productivity of your cow herd. This program has focussed on sire groups with a concentrated effort on cow families. Most of the herd adheres to the old saying “a great herd bull has a great mother” and this is certainly true for the grand dam as well. This enhances your chances of having a great one and more importantly raising a herd sire that breeds some consistency for you.

I urge you to give Vern, Denise, Riley, or Cody a call to discuss your bull needs. They will be only too glad to assist you. Both Gary and I will be familiar with this great set of bulls as sale day rolls around and be in a position to discuss the bulls on offer. If you are unable to be in the seats sale day, we will be in a position to represent your herd bull buying needs in a professional and confidential manner.

680S is a bull that will go down writing history in the Simmental breed. He was bred-born and raised here, sired by Wheatland Bull 131L and mothered by a Wheatland bred female, Wheatland Lady 351N.A true breeding bull, having as many high sellers and competitive cattle as any. Never has there been a bull that has added the stoutness, shape and hair that 680 does, time after time. No matter where he is used, how he is used; his progeny are as consistent and predictable as they come.

24Here is a bull that could write the next chapter in the breed! 122Y is without a doubt one of the most exciting bulls that we have offered for sale! You will not find a calf that is as stout from end to end as he is --- he is a tank! This comes as no surprise as his sire is Wheatland Predator and his dam is a TopGun/902 daughter. When we flushed 902 to Top Gun we had 5 full sibs—Red Ace and Maverick on the bull side and Wheatland Lady 736, this bulls dam, Wheatland Lady 737, Stouts’ dam and Wheatland Lady 742, 921’s dam your current Agribition Champion Female and the dam of Red Earth. I think this pedigree comes to you with a lot of predictability and consistency!! Predator sired many Division Champions at CWA this past fall. 122Y was the Reserve Junior Champion Bull Calf at the 2011 CWA. Predator will put that extra shape into his calves. The guess work in this bull is done, he has a power packed pedigree--- 902J, 351N, 736T, Predator, 680S and back to the one who started it all Teddy 131L. 122Y has all of the great ones in him! This bull is massive, he is all meat and muscle, a total performance bull. He is huge ribbed and extremely wide quartered with an absolute perfect foot under him. You really appreciated this bull on the move, he is so sound. 122Y has great testicle development and has that good hair. He has the look of a herdsire, very strong headed. Here is one of the Predator power bulls, let him leave his performance in your next calf crop.

These Predator bulls are a must see! You will not find a bull that puts the extreme muscle mass in cattle like Predator does. 125Y, is a typical Predator son, massive topped, huge hipped, deep bodied with wicked hair and testicle development. These are all very important traits when selecting your next herd sire. He is mothered by a no miss Red Label/902J daughter, that has no problem raising herd bulls. Her son sold in our 2010 sale to Mackenzie Livestock for $7000, and in our sale last year her Unanimous son sold for $17,000 to Arrow Creek Simmentals. 644S is a typical 902J daughter, a beautifully uddered, big barrelled hard working female. The mother to Kopp Farms high seller for $43,000 was sired by a Red Label/902J son --- 644’s full sib. Congrats to the Kopp family! This is the consistency we have mentioned. 125Y is a bull that we believe has endless potential, his pedigree is loaded with genetics that have stood the test of time and worked! If you are looking for a powerful Predator bull --- look no further, this is the calf.

Here is a Predator son, that was part of our show team last fall. 129Y made lots of friends at Agribition, for his muscle shape, big but and huge hip. Predator added big tops, huge quarters and that awesome electric hair to his calves. We are very happy with our Predator calves and will continue to use him in our program. 129Y is mothered by an outcross WS Route One female. She is a very complete moderate cow with a good udder. 129Y would be a little of an outcross on the bottom side of his pedigree. 129Y has always demanded our attention, he is a deep sided, long , stout made bull. He has excellent testicle development. His maternal brother sold in the 2011 to the good people of OpenShaw Farms, Dieter and Marlene Rucks. This bull will definitely add some shape and muscle mass to his calf crop. Here is a chance to buy a Predator son and bring in some outcross genetics.

He is a tank with loads of hair. 142Y is big footed, he moves like a cat and is packed full of mass and power. This black bull is backed by some of our best cow families. His sire, Predator is making a name for himself in the Simmental industry, just like his sire 680S and his grandsire Teddy. This bull is mothered by a female who is a tank, she is phenotypically awesome with a picture perfect udder. 751T is a PTO female, this bull sold in our 2006 sale to Tableland Cattle of Estevan where he has made a huge impact on their breeding females. The PTO females are a must see, great producing females! 142Y may just be one of the stoutest bulls to sell this spring. He will leave those extra pounds on your calf crop in the fall. I think everyone needs to sit back and really analyze this pair of flush brothers! Not only phenotypically are they flawless, but genetically they come from our very best, elite cow families. After many years of breeding Simmental cattle, we have not had a pair of calves that have made us this excited! These two individuals come as no surprise as they are sired by Predator, the $44,000 high seller in 2010 selling to Tableland Cattle Co., KBR Simmentals, MRL Ranching Ltd. and Come As U R Simmentals. What a job Predator has done in these progressive operations, he is siring the right kind the kind the commercial cattle industry is demanding! This pair of brothers no doubt are as STOUT made as you will see, they have that hair that Vern has named ELECTRIC! These bulls are massive topped, huge barrelled, deep sided sound free moving individuals that have a TON of shape and lots of testicle development. The dam of these bulls is creating her own legacy, 351N is an outstanding female, who nears perfection. It could be argued as to what female here is “the one” 902J or 351N--- both females have surpassed our expectations. Wheatland Lady 351N is the mother of the most sought after black Simmental bull to date—Wheatland Bull 680S, a bull that is a breed changer!! His calves were all stamped, they can be described in 3 words: STOUT , HAIRY and GOOD! We have all seen the impact 680S has made on the Simmental Breed. She is also themother to Wheatland Bull 786T “Bomber”, the $18,000 hetro black bull that sold to the good people of Maple Lake Stock Farms, Jerry and Linda Bertholet, MB. Just ask Jerry and Linda about the impact that 786T has had on their program. In last years sale she produced a high seller, Wheatland Nitro 64X, who sold for $25,000 to the very progressive young people at Diamond M Ranch. Over the past couple of sales she has also produced sons that are working in the productive herds of Carmen Wright, AB and Graham Mckenzie, SK. Wheatland Lady 351N has become one of the immortal females at Wheatland. We truly believe that these two bulls will have the same positive impact on the breed as 680S, they are BREED CHANGERS!! These flush brothers have to be seen to be appreciated—they are so massive from all angles, they will demand you to look at them. You know the predictability is here when you have two flush brothers and both are so similar in type—these herdsires were no surprise when they were born . Whenever selecting a herd sire, there has to be a proven and predictable cow family behind him--- this is what makes us so ecstatic about these brothers. These guys, not only have a pedigree that won’t be beat, they carry the LER prefix for generations back in their pedigrees. These two bulls have endless potential. This is your invitation to be at Alameda March 29th to watch these powerful Predator herdsires sell. Terms to be announced on both flush brothers sale day.

His sire is Wheatland Stout--- he sure did a consistent job for us and also at Rancier Farms. A stout daughter exhibited by Rancier Farms was a high seller at the 2011 Agribition sale selling for $20,000. We showed quite a few Stout heifer calves were we had class winners and a Reserve Division Champion. This bull is mothered by a beautiful 440P daughter with an awesome udder, she is one of our favorites. 440P did a solid job working in the great Westway herd, the Hadways of Alberta. This bull is super big hipped and topped. He is long sided and he is powerful! You really have to appreciate this bull for his overall mass and his haircoat. These two full flush brothers are peas in a pod! 197 and 198 are complete, they are very deep sided bulls that are stout made and full of muscle. Both of these bulls have great hair. These boys are sired by Stout 930W, the two time Agribition Champion Grand Champion Simmental Bull, who sold to Rancier Farms in the 2010 bull sale. The 10 dose pack of Stout semen that sold at this past Agribition commanded a price of $1000/dose selling to Sunrise Simmentals- Evan Cuss of Spy Hill. We are very happy with our Stout calves, all are really consistent and have that cool hair. The dam of these brothers is Wheatland Lady 638S who was Reserve Grand Champion Simmental Female at the 2008 CWA--- her heifer calf sold in our 2009 sale for $43,000 to Double Bar D Farms, where she is a donor female. These Stout sons have eye appeal and are structurally correct made bulls. They are big butted and have large testicles. We have always preached that a bull is only as good as the cow families behind them, these guys are packed with proven and predictable cow families on both sides of their pedigrees. One of the most exciting red bulls to sell this spring! His pedigree will not be beat! He is sired by Wheatland Stout 930W, the second high seller in our 2010 sale, selling to Rancier Farms for $34,000. There are not many times when you can buy a bull out of a sale and win Agribition Grand Champion back to back and become the National Champion. Stouts’ first daughter then sold in the Agribition sale and brought $20,000. Congrats to the Rancier Family!! This bull should come as no surprise, look at his mother--- Wheatland Lady 902J, a female that has set the bar. All of the 902J females have been retained and are working in our herd, they sure aren’t hard to pick out, they just flat work!! Her sons are out working in many of the great herds of our breed and have always been a sale highlight. Last year, we sold a 680/902J son, Protocol 83X to the great people of Rust Mountain View Ranch, ND. We chatted with Josh the other day and he calls Protocol the picture perfect bull! We are excited to see Protocol work in their operation. These direct 902J sons are limited, after all she is 13 years of age and still in production. We feel this bull has endless potential and is just bred to be great! 192Y, is stout made, long bodied with tons of hair. This bull is loaded with character, he has style to burn!! 192Y, can really get out and move, he also has awesome testicle development. If your building a herd around cow families than this bull will do the job!! Don’t pass up the opportunity to own a direct 902J herdsire!

He has an excellent hair coat. He is mothered by 860U, who is a full sib to Wheatland Red Hummer 608S—owned by Double Bar D Farms and Swan Lake Simmentals. Add 1020 to your herdsire line up for the 2012 breeding season.

Working with Vern, Denise, Riley and Cody has been a great experience and rewarding venture. Merit Cattle Co. has been producing Angus seedstock for 27 years and like the Lafrentz family, what we do is our passion. At Merit we march to the beat of our own drum, we have always believed in the value of a true breeding program through the use of our own herdsires, whether they were raised by us or purchased. We believe that the basics are essential to build a strong foundation. We’ve never chased the latest fad. Our cowherd has been moving forward down the middle of the road, no single trait selection or extremes. We have always focused on balanced trait selection. Udder quality, depth, fleshing ability, fertility, great hair and exceptional foot structure are the basics upon which we built our cowherd. The mothers of these bulls are a combination of front end females and good solid producers. These bulls ARE a consistent product! Their female siblings are equally as impressive. They are out of quality registered Angus females. These bulls are the product of two consistent and predictable programs with the same philosophies. We did NOT breed a group of bottom end cows in hope of getting a better product, that doesn’t offer anything to anyone The first set of females are now in production and are a true testament to the superior quality of these matings. Beware of cheap imitations. These bulls are herd builders and improvers; you have the opportunity to seize all the benefits that both breeds have to offer.Trent & Janelle

The crew and cattle at Wheatland have accomplished great things in the past few years...champions everywhere you look. They are a compliment to the simmental breed and the beef industry, leading the way in superior genetics. For our commercial cattle, extra pounds and top cut steers in the fall are important, but they’re only part of our calf crop. We like to fit our heifers into the replacement market as well, as either open or bred. Wheatland bulls are helping accomplish our goals. Vern and Denise’s attention to detail makes buying a bull an easy decision. The cow families they have bred up over time are second to none; great cows make great bulls. Wheatland Cattle Co. must be very proud of their program, and are a testament that hard work really pays off. John King Diamond K Ranch
