on May 16, 2011, the space shuttle endeavour lifted off on its final mission—the penultimate mission of the entire shuttle program—and subsequently docked with the international Space Station (iSS) on May 19. Part of the Endeavour’s mission was to deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02), which included several Fike rupture discs, to the ISS.

the aMs-02 is a state-of-the-art particle physics detector designed for a ten-year study to search for anti- matter and to collect data to determine long-term variations of cosmic ray composition and flux. these observations will be used to attempt to answer

fundamental questions about our universe regarding the existence of dark matter and to improve our understanding of the origin of cosmic rays and their propagation through our solar system.

though exciting to be part of such an extraordinary project, this is not the first time Fike pressure relief

products have been in space. Fike rupture discs were specially designed for use within the engine powering the space shuttle itself.

Endeavour, the baby of the Nasa shuttle fleet, was built to replace Challenger, destroyed during lift-off 25 years ago. It made its maiden journey six years later to capture and repair a stranded satellite

Endeavour carried the first Hubble space telescope repair team, which famously restored the observatory’s vision in 1993, and the first American piece of the space station in 1998.

It will end its days at the California Science Centre in Los Angeles.

Endeavour has so far logged more than 116m miles, circled Earth some 4,500 times, spent 283 days in space and carried 170 people, including the last two people to fly a space shuttle for the first time.

over a gruelling two days of strenuous physical activity, a team of intrepid employees from Fike, a leading supplier of innovative fire protection solutions, recently scaled all three of the UK’s highest peaks – Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in wales.

as a result of their efforts and exertions, the employees raised well over £1,000 for the st anne’s Hospice in cwmbran, which provides specialist in-patient palliative care services. the money came from sponsorship and from a generous donation provided by the company.those who took part in the challenge were oliver Newman, terry Malarky, Ross Newman and Mark kendall, supported by anji Lloyd and Gareth purcell who drove the team between the three mountains. the challenge took place over two days and, by the time it was finished those taking part had walked more than 24 miles over terrain that varied from easy to very demanding, and the drivers had covered almost 1,200 miles.“We’d anticipated that this would be a tough challenge, and we were right,” said oliver Newman.

“it started easily enough, but the build up of fatigue over the two days and deterioration in the weather meant that things got much more difficult towards the end. Nevertheless, all of us who took part thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and we’re delighted to have been able to raise a useful sum of money for st anne’s Hospice, a charity that consistently does really great work.”the challenge started at the foot of Ben Nevis at 6:30 am on a sunday, and the team enjoyed the climb to the 1,344 m summit in good weather conditions. the same day, the team moved on to the 978 m scafell pike, where the ascent started at 4:00 pm. Darkness was falling as the team reached the peak, so the descent took place almost entirely in darkness, presenting additional difficulties. By Monday morning, the team had relocated to snowdon and was ready for yet another early start – this time at 4:00 am. the weather conditions were very poor but nevertheless, several members of the team managed to complete the 1085 m ascent and descent, even after their exertions of the previous day and a night spent almost entirely in a minibus.

fike Japan’S “Staff blog”by TAkASHI SHImurA

Celebrating Fike Japan 30th anniversary last year, Fike Japan web site had been renewal and started staff blog about a year ago. Staff blog is an article where any members of Fike Japan could put together only indicating what we are interested in during the personal life. The staff blog has been getting popular at Fike Japan web site and the customers and users in Japan read the blogs and have a friendly feeling about the staff where they work at Fike Japan as well as they can see the staff faces and what they do in their personal lives.

in this June, scott Ruland joined the staff blog and for the Japanese we including ourselves could see what the us people life is and how they live and what they are interested in. it is extremely an interesting blog scott participates. His blog is in english so you can read it.

i have included one of his blogs, but please visit the site, http://www.fikejapan.co.jp/blog/author/scott/, to read the other ones.

Scott Ruland June 23, 2011 Blog

Fike recently purchased a fire protection company in south Wales, united kingdom and i travelled to that facility every 8 weeks for 18 months. During one of my trips, i was accompanied by a couple of other Fike engineers, Gary Bond and paul kohne. Gary had done some research and noticed that stonehenge was not far off the path between London and Wales, so he asked our host if we could stop by and see it on the way.our host, of course, knew nothing about stonehenge or its location, but agreed to take us anyway and typed “stonehenge” into his Gps, got an answer and away we went. All was okay for the first hour of the trip (stonehenge is about 90 miles from London so we expected the trip to take about 1.5 hours). the Gps took us off the main highway and onto a minor road. the road started out as a divided highway, then went to two lanes each way and finally down to only one lane each way.We drove on this road for a few minutes. Gradually, the paved road turned into a dirt road. then into

a single lane dirt road, more like a path. Finally, we came upon a shepherd walking along the road, which was really narrow by now, with his sheep and his dog. (Now being a fairly urban person, i had never seen a real shepherd in the field with his dog and sheep before). i suggested to our host that we might be off our path. He fiddled with his GPS some more, grunted and then called someone for information on his mobile. His accent was hard for me to follow, but he had a long conversation with someone (i think his son) and pronounced that we had to turn around. We had to go in reverse back down the path because there was not enough room to turn the car around. We eventually drove back to the highway. after six more phone calls and much driving with a few more wrong turns, we eventually found Stonehenge (as you probably figured out from the pictures). it took us about 3 hours. stonehenge was very interesting and very little is known about what purpose is serves or why it exists. if you are ever in the neighborhood, it is worth a visit...but make sure your host knows where it is....signing off for now....

Imagine sitting on your front porch enjoying the sounds of an early summer evening when suddenly a tiny white light appears at the end of your street. that single white light is quickly followed by another, then two more, and dozens of tiny white lights appear. The lights approach your house darting back and forth. Before you know it, the street in front of your house is filled with dozens of bicycle headlights. As quickly as they arrived, those headlights disappear and all you can see are fading red taillights rounding the corner at the end of the street.

this scene was played out very late on the evening of June 11th during the 2011 Blue springs Night Ride. the

Blue springs Night Ride is held each year thanks to the Blue springs parks and Recreation Department and the Bike stop (a local bike shop). the proceeds from entry fees are used to develop and promote bike trails within Blue springs. this year’s ride offered the cyclist a choice of two routes of 14 or 19 miles through the streets and neighborhoods of Blue springs. each course offered riders a very safe and enjoyable “nighttime” riding experience. unique to this ride is the fact that it starts just before midnight and ends about an hour-and-a-half later on the following day. at the conclusion of the ride, the hungry participants are treated to a variety of goodies, including fresh fruit, frozen yogurt sticks, sodas, sports drinks, donuts and even the famous Lamar’s cinnamon rolls. (Rumor has it you may be able to spot a fellow employee partaking of the famous cinnamon roll somewhere in this edition of Focus on Fike!)

in March of 2011, dan and Sheila Zani led a group of individuals, known as “Team Xtreme”, to southeastern Guatemala to assist three communities and schools in the area.

Generous donations from the Fike charitable Foundation allowed team Xtreme to work in 3 local towns impacting over 3,000 people including over 650 children by repainting and rebuilding portions of the schools in these communities. in the town of agua Blanca, the team bought all the necessary supplies, laid a new foundation and provided running water for new restrooms in John F kennedy elementary school which enrolls over 400 children. the other two schools, located in papalhuapa and primero de Mayo, received fresh coats of paint making a huge difference and impact for the children that attend every day.

perhaps the most touching story of their visit to Guatemala occurred during their visit to primero de Mayo. this small “shanty town” is the poorest area in southeast Guatemala. this community had no electricity or running water. the children that attended this school went every day with nothing to eat and little hope of having their lives changed. But with Fike’s donation, for the next year every child will now receive a nutritious lunch. team Xtreme was very grateful for the opportunity to make a change in this community due to the support from Fike.

However, it wasn’t all work and no play during their visit to Guatemala. at each town the team visited, they hosted a small carnival/festival for the families and children in the area. New soccer balls were donated inspiring small soccer tournaments. Dental care products plus training were provided so they could practice good hygiene. the children and families even had the opportunity to participate in face painting, balloon animals, piñatas, puzzles and games.

“Nothing melts your heart more than the smile of a child,” Dan Zani commented. the Zani’s and team Xtreme want to thank Fike for their substantial donations to the families and schools in Guatemala whose lives you have touched and changed forever.

For the past four years, Fike corporation has made a commitment to raise funds and participate in the annual Light the Night Walk benefitting the Mid-america chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma society. Fike’s goal this year was to raise $5000.00.

With the help of Fike employees participating in fundraisers which included smart chicken/costentinos price chopper Luncheon, Bake sales, Dress Down Day, Buy a Balloon and silent auction we were able to exceed our goal and raise approximately $8200.00!

on behalf of the team captains, Maureen o’connor, karen Gingles and myself, we would like to thank all of you for another successful year! We are always looking for new and creative ways to raise money, so if you have any ideas for fundraisers for next year, please contact us.
