TEMPLE DAILY TELEGRAM / 1 FEB•2014 EVENTS CALENDAR On January 24, the Temple Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2014 Salute to Business at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center. In the words of Kenny McCarty, 2013 Chair of the Board, “This is an opportunity for the business community, for members of the Temple Chamber to join together to celebrate our rich heritage, past accom- plishments, present endeavors and exciting plans for growth and develop- ment.” These present endeavors and plans were further encouraged by Drayton McLane, Jr., the guest speaker for the evening. Drayton challenged the audi- ence, as business owners, residents and leaders in the com- munity, to make 2014 through 2025 years of growth and development for Temple. The highlight of the 2014 Salute to Business was when Keifer Marshall, Jr. was named as recipi- ent of the Drayton and Elizabeth McLane Community Achievement Award. A new feature of the Salute to Business, this award recog- nizes an individual who truly exemplifies servant leadership in the Temple community, who gives with- out regard to receiving, and who has provided guidance and leadership to advance the community we all call home. On behalf of President Rod Henry and staff of the Temple Chamber of Commerce, we extend a heart-felt thank you to the numerous individuals, businesses and volunteers who con- tributed to make the Salute to Business a fantastic event. From the new addi- tion of the Reception Sponsors to those working behind the scenes, each con- tribution allows the Chamber to carry out its mission of “Serving the business community by preserving, protecting and promoting a business friendly envi- ronment, free of obstacles to growth and development.” There is much about 2013 to look back on with pride, but as Drayton reminded us, we are never more vul- nerable than when we're successful. May we take that to heart and continue the hard work and com- mitment in making Temple,Texas a great place to live, work, play, pray and call home! This course and its groundbreakingcurriculum are major shifts in theway we learn aboutEntrepreneuring and businessbuilding. You may not consideryourself an entrepreneur, yet if youare the principle leader or decisionmaker in any business or depart-ment within a business, you must

be an entrepreneur in order to con-tinue to grow your business. If you aspire to a lead-ership role in your company, you can also benefit bythinking like an entrepreneur or owner rather thanan employee. And finally, if you are thinking aboutbranching out on your own, you must have theentrepreneurial mindset and business building skillsto succeed.Entrepreneurship is NOT management. It is aprocess of discovering opportunities in other peo-ple’s problems, building a solution and a companyto deliver that solution. It requires a different mind-

set than managing an established business. Thiscourse is designed specifically to teach you to thinklike an entrepreneur and execute a defined processto discover, develop and profit from an opportunity. This course has changed people’s lives and it willchange yours if you attend. The prestigious Kauffman Foundation, an entrepre-neurial center located in Kansas City, has heraldedthis course. The Kauffman Vice President ofEntrepreneurship, Thom Ruhe said, “The Ice HouseEntrepreneurship Program is changing the wayentrepreneurship is being taught in classrooms andcommunities throughout the world.” In just twoyears, the program has been introduced in many col-leges and universities throughout the United Statesand in 11 countries.

So what makes this course so special? The course introduces the trainee to a way of think-ing that is different than most people. It teaches anEntrepreneurial Mindset. The course is based onkey business and character traits, experienced by

Clifton Taulbert, who was born into the environ-ment of small town, cotton farming in pre-integra-tion Mississippi. Starting from this complete lack ofadvantages, Clifton is now a major owner of theBank of Oklahoma and speaks to audiences largeand small throughout the country. He attributes itto learning eight life lessons. These eight lessons are brought to you during thecourse by meeting, through video, 14 real worldpeople who started with less than a few thousanddollars, some with nothing, and all now own multi-million dollar companies. After viewing the videoassignments each week, you will come to class for aguided discussion and mentoring. The life lessonswill be discussed with the class and with local entre-preneurs who own successful local businesses.During the course you will also discover and prac-tice the Opportunity Discovery Process. This is away of examining your business ideas to see if theyare financially suitable for investing your time. Thisprocess alone could save you from wasting count-less dollars. The classes meet at The Entrepreneur Center eachTuesday for 10 weeks beginning Feb. 18th. Seatingis limited. Don’t miss out! Seats are confirmed bygetting your check to The Entrepreneur Center at 19North Main St. in Temple. You may also register atwww.tec-centex.com or call 254-598-7400.

A Day Behind Social Services With Leadership Temple

On Tuesday, January 28, 2014, theLeadership Temple 2013 – 2014 classhad their Social Services Day. We visit-ed Feed My Sheep located at 112 WestAvenue G, to assist with preparationand serving lunch to those in need.Feed My Sheep daily prepares and dis-tributes sack lunches and one hot mealto any individual who comes to the

kitchen needing something to eat. In2013, food and monetary donationsfrom various individuals, businessesand churches in the community pro-vided all the necessary items to pre-

pare meals for 365 days, without thekitchen having to purchase any fooditems. Feed My Sheepalso serves as a warm-ing shelter from 5:00p.m. to 9:00 a.m. formen when the tem-peratures outside arefrigid.Feed My Sheep wasorganized when agroup of concernedcitizens from Templesaw the need to feedthe homeless and hadstrong communitysupport. Feed MySheep has receivedassistance fromChurches Touching Lives ThroughChrist regarding a 501 c(3) status andwill eventually be a stand alone min-istry in the community.Visiting Feed My Sheep gave the classof Leadership Temple the opportunityto see a side of Temple that we nor-mally would not in our daily routines. We were greeted by Ms. Ellen andgiven a tour of the facility. Feed MySheep is extremely short-staffed, andour morning visit there was a greatopportunity for us to see not only howdifficult it is for those at Feed My

Sheep to put together and feed nearly160 people daily, but for us to see just

how many people are in need ofhelp. Our visit to Feed My Sheepgave this 2013-14 class ofLeadership Temple our firstchance to come together andwork as one team in a group set-ting. It was great to see the classtaking charge of the situationand helping in all facets of theFeed My Sheep daily meal.Once all the duties of feedingthose in need were completed,we assisted with cleaning thefood preparation areas. Our next stop was the Chamberwhere we participated in a work-

ing lunch, while Ann Thompsonfrom the United Way spoke to usregarding the services that the UnitedWay provides to the community andalso the various community agencieswho receive United Way funding.Thirteen different social service com-munity partners participated in theafternoon event by giving a briefoverview of the services their agencyprovides. The Leadership team wasdivided into five different groups witha possible case scenario. Each groupwas to determine which of the socialservice agencies could assist with the

needs presented in each scenario, byvisiting with the agency representa-tives. The scenarios provided us with agood understanding of the servicesavailable regarding various needs inthe community such as housing, childcare, job training and job assistance, utility assistance and educational. The Temple/Belton social service agen-cies work very closely with one anoth-er when it comes to sharing resourcesand assisting the needy in this commu-nity. Networking is a vital componentto each of us as we collaborate togeth-er to meet those needs.

Temple Leadership enjoyed our SocialServices Day as we were able to meetmany of the agencies that make a dif-ference in so many lives. Temple istruly a great place to live and work!

By: Sharon Sapp, Chris Peal & Erik Ray, Leadership Temple

whether it’s in their purse, their car, for grocerylists or random notes,” he said. “Hopefully I getsome business out of it, but it’s also part of ourwelcome to the community area for the soldiersand their families at Fort Hood.” The Temple Chamber has participated in HoodHowdy events since 2003. The Extra Mile

Some, who actually gothere, find it is like theSahara Desert. Almost noone else is there. Othersdon’t really go the extramile. They think, why amI doing this, no one else is,this is nuts! So, they stopgoing the extra mile. Forthose who keep going, therewards are great!Show up early, stay late, doextra work, engage more people, help a coworker, help your boss, gothe extra mile with a customer. Beattentive rather than just taking upspace. Offer to help. Offer to trainemployees. Let your initiativeshine. Don’t wait for an invitation, just do stuff that moves the compa-ny or is just the right thing to do.Lead from the front! Do the dirtylittle jobs and show other employ-ees how to do things. There is a corollary to Murphy’sLaw that goes, “In order to get any-

thing done, you have to do some-thing else first.” Instead of com-plaining about those things, decidethat you like to do what the peoplewho pay you want you to do anddo those little pop up tasks thatcome along. It often takes less timethan bringing them to someoneelse’s attention for resolution or adecision. Like the Nike line, “JustDo It!” As a decision maker, you need tofind ways to go the extra mile withyour customers. Often customerswill tell you exactly how you can

go the extra mile, if you are listen-ing. I had a friend who plannedand executed events for adults. Hehad a niche, was focused and was

doing fairly well. One ofhis clients asked himto do a birthday partyfor her pre-teendaughter. He said,“No.” because it was-n’t in his view of whathis company was allabout. He was asked asimilar question soonafter and still he said,“No.” He was proba-

bly asked about 6 timesover the course of a few monthsfrom his existing customers for thisnew service. Finally the light bulbcame on. Today, he has a thrivingpre-teen girl’s birthday party com-pany, in addition to his other com-

pany. Listen to your cus-tomers; they will pave theway for you to go the extramile.Anything a customer will pay you aprofitable price to do, as long as itisn't illegal or unethical, you should

do. If they want you to deliver out-side your regular area, price it fairlyand if they agree, do it! If they wantsomething special, if they'll pay youfor it, great. If the customer’s needsrequire you break a sweat and domanual labor, stop whining, roll upyour sleeves, and get paid.• If you just do what you want todo, you might be able to build abusiness. • If you will do what customerswant you to do, you can build anenduring business. • If you then go the extra mile, youcan build a greatly admired busi-ness.Whenever you do anything, thinkof that one special extra thing youcan do—Then Do It!Going the extra mile will make youstand out and in the long run that iswhat will make you incredibly suc-cessful.
