From Snap Shot to
Great Shot
by John Fan
What is the difference between a snap
shot and a great shot? What do we tell
our viewers through our photographs?
The talk will discuss some of the key
composition aspects in modern ages,
and explore ideas behind photo

July: White Pelicans on the Mississippi Outing Update
For most of the year, especially the spring and summer, American White Pelicans
(Pelcanus erythro-rhynchos) can be seen ‘fishing’ just below the dam’s spillway. One
shoots the Pelicans from the Illinois side of Lock & Dam #14. The bad news is that it’s
a morning shoot which means a VERY early start; the good news is that you’re close
to the birds, there are plenty of them so you’re done shooting early enough to get
home for an afternoon nap!
I announced this Outing in the May FOCUS, anticipating that the spring run-off would
result in suitable conditions by mid-June, but nature did not cooperate. The problem
is that high water means high flow rates, which makes it very difficult for the pelicans
to ‘fish’ just below the dam. The river is still somewhat high but flow rates and levels
are moderating, meaning that in a week or so we can expect good conditions.
Several folks have asked me to keep them advised of plans for this trip. If you like to
add your name to that list, drop me an email at: [email protected] or give
me a call at 630 665 6598.

Exhibits Fred Drury
The new ‘Fur, Fin or Feather’ exhibit is now up at Mayslake and will run to about
the end of August
Looking ahead to our fall Mayslake exhibit, its theme is ‘National & State Parks’. That exhibit will run from about the end of August until the end of
October. FWIW: I’m applying a ‘liberal’ interpretation to ‘National& State Parks’ to include wildlife preserves (e.g. Jasper Pulaski, etc.), and County Forest
Preserves (e.g. Messenger Woods, Fullersburg Woods, etc.) Reserve your spots in the show. For each image you’d like in the show please email me: Title,
Location (where shot), Size, and Price (or ‘Not for Sale’).
Also keep in mind that we currently have two ‘reusable’ frame kits (and can purchase more if needed). We use these kits to frame prints prepared for
competition (11x14”), so if you’ve got an image you’d like to exhibit but don’t want to have it framed, you can still participate. Just let me know in your email
that you’d like to use one of these frame kits … we’ll do the work for you!
If you have any suggestions for next year’s exhibit themes or for additional
exhibit locations, or of suggestions which would encourage increased member participation, please drop me an email at: [email protected] or give
me a call at 630 665 6598.

You will learn how to evaluate images both subjectively and objectively; how color is measured and interpreted. You will learn the three fundamental rules of image optimization. You will learn to use the most effective tools for color correction; procedures for selective dodge and burn, and image sharpening. This course teaches you the fundamentals of a working photographer's practical digital workflow, and prepares you for the second course in the series. Users of Photoshop CS5 or later will gain full value from this class. I strongly recommend you take both Photoshop l and Photoshop ll. $150 plus $20 supply fee. To register, call (630) 206-9566. Photoshop ll with Fred Drury on Wednesdays from Dec. 6 – Jan. 10, 2018, (6:30-9:30PM) … no class on December 27 In this second course in the Photoshop series, participants will apply techniques from the first class to their own images. Additional skills added will include: image cropping; image straightening and clean up; dust and scratch removal; use of the shadow/highlights tool; making selections; creating and using masks for local image optimization. The subject of Color Management and its impact on image editing will be addressed. Prerequisite: Photoshop l. $150 plus $20 supply fee. To register, call (630) 206-9566. Lightroom l with Fred Drury on Wednesdays, Jan. 24 – Feb. 21 (6:30 – 9:30PM) Learn about Adobe’s Lightroom software, which allows you to enhance and organize digital photos, and work with the program’s Library module and partway through its Develop module at this five-part class. Lightroom CC will be used for demonstrations; however anyone using Lightroom 5, or 6 will gain full value from the class. I strongly recommend you take both Lightroom l and Lightroom ll Ages 18 and up. $150 per person plus an additional $20 supply fee due on the first day of class. To register, call (630) 206-9566.
Lightroom ll with Fred Drury on Wednesdays, Mar. 7 – Apr. 4 (6:30 – 9:30PM) This class continues from Lightroom l with the balance of the Develop module as well as techniques for integrating Lightroom with Photoshop. The course concludes with an examination of the Print and Slideshow modules. Ages 18 and up. Digital Photography Fundamentals l with Fred Drury on Thursdays, Apr 26 – May 24 (6:30 – 9:30PM) Learn about the important features of digital cameras and the aesthetics of great images in this five-part class. Modern digital cameras do everything that film cameras did, but they do it much, much better. We start out by helping you learn how to use your camera’s manual, and to use it to familiarize yourself with important controls including

setting aperture, shutter speed, ISO, histograms and highlight warning. A primary objective of this course is to help you learn to use your camera’s creative modes including both ‘Shutter Priority’ (to stop or blur motion) and ‘Aperture Priority’ (to manage Depth-of-Field). Weekly shooting assignments will build upon one another and exercise your creative skills. Ages 18 and up. $150 per person plus an additional $20 supply fee due on the first day of class. To register, call (630) 206-9566. Digital Photography Fundamentals ll with Fred Drury on Thursdays, May 31 – June 28 (6:30 – 9:30PM) This class builds on the foundations of Digital Photo Fundamentals l, with emphasis on features and capabilities digital cameras include which were not available with film cameras. Each week will address a new aspect of digital photography and its relationship to the computer, including why you should shoot RAW, Color Management, expose to the right (ETTR), HDR, Focus Stacking and an introduction to image editing software. As was the case with DPFl, weekly shooting assignments will give you the opportunity to create images each week using the techniques discussed in class. Prerequisite: Digital Photo Fundamentals l or equivalent. Ages 18 and up. $150 plus $20 supply due on the first day of class. To register, call (630) 206-9566.
