Focus ON INTERVIEW

For our very first Interview with the new Focus Magazine we have asked a well known face to many across Mayo. Toni Bourke, former editor with the Mayo Advertiser and now working as Fundraising Manager with The

Irish Heart Foundation. And why? Well when you find out that this hard-working woman is also a hard-working mother of 2 kids under 5, you start to get impressed and motivated. “It’s a pretty crazy life” says Toni as she relaxes in the chair to get pampered for a few minutes. She is just in the middle of organising 80 Church collections and has rushed through the rain after just catching the last post. “It’s hectic sometimes but it’s a really great charity to be part of. Next on the list is to help with the organising of a White Collar Boxing tournament in Galway that is supporting five charities - Self Help Africa, Cope Galway, Special Olympics Ireland, Act for Meningitis and the Irish Heart Foundation” OK, breath.... What is a working day? Anything from travelling to Cork or Donegal, to working from home in the ‘office’. I could be in Dublin for 2 days and at home for 2, its ever changing and that’s what adds to the excitement.” So how do you control this juggling act. “Family. My husband is a real support. He has his own business, Seasons Restaurant in Castlebar, so our schedules sometimes take a bit to organise, but he is a great dad and a great husband. We work well as a team. Then my dad helps out to. It might be a different story in September when the oldest starts school, but we will deal with that when it comes.” So what brings Toni to her present day business life? She is still young but has much experience already under her belt. “After Leaving Cert I studied Communications in DCU, it wasn’t great, but it was a start and I achieved a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. I then did a HDip in Journalism in NUI. I changed to masters and got accepted and it all began from there. I worked in the Connaught Telegraph and Mid West Radio for work experience then the Telegraph offered me a permanent position. I covered club and county GAA matches from under

age level right up to the county team at All Ireland final level. It was a fierce graw.” I still don’t know what that means…. “I learned my trade the traditional way, through the ranks. Then the opportunity came up to work with the Mayo Advertiser. I was an ambitious journalist. I worked as a senior reporter and I was responsible for covering courts, local authority meetings, features, and general news stories. I was

also responsible for writing and editing editorial for health and lifestyle, community diary, property, motoring, education, business, farming and a range of different weekly sales features. Then the position of Editor came up and I went for it. I worked there for 7 years. One of my proudest moments was to hear Michael Ring acknowledge my work that I had done with the paper at my very last engagement at the best of Mayo Awards, not in a big headed way but in a self satisfying one.” So why the change? “Well I believe that you should never ignore opportunity. I’m driven by the fact that like many, our family has been touched by this specific illness. My Grandfather had 16 heart attacks. If I can accomplish something that is worthwhile that can educate and hopefully help people than that in itself is worth all the effort.” So where do you see your future? “You mean what do I want to be when I grow up.” She says smiling. “The truth is I still don’t know. I will work as hard as I can at what I am doing right now. And, when opportunities present themselves, I’ll take a

peak and see. Along with work, I also am involved in Network Mayo, which helps promote Women in Business, The JCI, The Chamber and the various festivals that take place in Castlebar over the year. I love to help. I don’t want to be pigeon-holed.” I’m exhausted just listening. Toni is certainly driven, but not in an over ambitious way. She just knows what she wants right now and strives to balance her work/home life to get the most out of it. Who knows where her future lies. Thanks Toni. I hope you went out and made the most of the hair and makeup session. Truth is you probably went home as the most glamorous mother in Castlebar that evening.

Focus ON TECHNOLOGY

1. Let the Battle Commence.. The Cloud:“The cloud” is the term used to refer to platforms and applications that are sold as a service through the Internet. The heated battle for cloud supremacy will continue to heat up as Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Google and a host of other companies compete for this space. With the merging of mobile technologies and cloud computing we are starting to see a new platform — one with unlimited computing resources. But what of the security? If your new to “the cloud” you may be uncomfortable putting your r data where they cannot physically see it. Using a cloud platform, however, can give your business an edge, especially when it comes to security. Small to mid-size companies typically cannot afford the level of security these companies have in place.

2. Internet and more: Our physical world and the web will continue to expand in 2014. Connected devices are no longer just limited to smartphones and computers. Everything from door locks and home appliances to bikes and watches can now be networked. This same technology is being used to monitor our energy usage and provide recommendations on how to lower our heating bills. The benefit here is that products and services tied to the Internet can give

businesses a real-time picture of how their products and services are working.

3. Privacy: Talk about a buzzword, Wiki Leaks and Edward Snowden have put that on the map.. We now have a ‘no more secrets’ culture on our hands. There are companies that are competing with Google by utilizing the privacy angle to attract customers. According to a July 2013 Pew Research survey, 86 percent of Internet users have taken steps to protect their digital footprint by using methods like encrypting their email or clearing cookies. Looking into the future, companies will attempt to gain an advantage by claiming their product or service has a high level of privacy.

5. Wearable Technology: Wearable technology will start getting traction in the marketplace with gadgets from smart watches to gizmos embedded in your clothing. Specifically, health-tracking devices such as Fitbit Nike Fuel Band, and Samsung’s Galaxy Gear Smart Watch will gain serious consumer interest. Google is also expected to ship its groundbreaking Google Glass product in 2014.

was 39 and single then maybe, but I’m 39, married with 2 kids... (not a complaint, HAPPILY MARRIED).So from looks and general life perspective this car would suit my needs more. First things fi rst.... The look of the car is, of course, very much Audi, not just the 4 rings but the shape and the feel of the interior. Decked out on this model a few extras that keep the gadget fan in you happy including a pop up screen for control of the lights, radio, bluetooth etc including an upgrade that will allow ipads to connect with bluetooth to play music from. Speaking of Music, the upgraded Bang and Olufsen stereo is, well, music to the ears. This is the manual version we are in today, 6 gears, 150bhp and a very smooth and quiet 2.0 diesel engine. You get the feeling of acceleration that you expect without any unnecessary jerk of the neck and trip to casualty. The 6 Speed gearbox allows you to cruise when needed and for those who love to ‘drive’ it gives you a feeling of complete control. It even has a ‘wife’ style helper on the dash that reminds you when you should be changing gear.

The brochure on the new Audi A3 Saloon says “ The Audi A3 Saloon is the fi rst compact saloonto sport the four rings. It extends the Audi

product portfolio in the world’s fastest growingsegment – the A segment – with the additionof an important, forward-looking derivative. InIreland, the A-Segment Saloon accounts for over25% of total annual sales. Starting at €30,480on the road, the A3 Saloon is well equipped tocompete in this competitive market.” But to be honest all we want to know is How does it feel to drive and more importantly how do YOU feel when driving it.The other cars in its class would be the Golf GTI or the Volvo V40 so straight away you get a visual comparison. The Volvo not even an option for me as it brings back 2 many memories of trampoline like car journeys as a kid (I’m sure they are perfection now). The Golf? If I

EYES ARE THE WINDOW

TO THE SOUL

“MAYBE WE CAN HELP WITH

YOUR DECISION”

Eyes are the window to the soul. So what are windows? Yes the way your windows look from the outside reflects a lot of your personal taste and either hide or highlight what is on the inside. These days you have

many choices of style, design which can lead to some confusion about which is best for you. Should you go with curtains or blinds? Maybe we can help with your decision.

Some types of window covering should be disregarded immediately. If there are persons withallergies or respiratory issues you may not wantwooden blinds that are a magnet for dust. Theywould be in constant need of cleaning which is a time consuming task. Curtain materials are light and can be much easier to keep free of dust etc.

Next you need to ask yourself, what is the purpose of the room? Blinds can block out light and can begreat for bedrooms. Kids who take naps in the afternoon will benefit from this. In an older house, long heavy curtains often blend with the room as well as an added draught exclusion effect. Curtains in the kitchen allow for natural light to fill the room. Blinds in bungalows can give a feeling of more space. Lastly, if you want your windows to show your preference for colour then curtains come in great ranges. If you’re just looking for practicality then blinds are your choice. Personal taste, practicality, and your style of home all put together give you the chance to make your home, for a relatively small expense, a place you can look forward to coming back to.

KATIE’SCORNERCUPCAKE DECORATING

METHODWe have all seen them. Beautifully coloured and temptingly tasty behind the glass in your local bakery. Decorated Cupcakes are in the bizz. Can you do it yourself? Of course. Here’s how.

We are cheating a little bit this month. Katie is on dairy free diet so we had to source some premade cupcakes to decorate.

- Firstly we recommend to practice piping on a board first, to get the hang of it. Practice, Practice, Practice.

- Katie is using the star tip. starting in the center, swirl around with even pressure and leave a peaky top at the top again. This is a great way to get that ‘ice cream’ look.

- Mix your Fondant Icing or Royal Icing to a consistency that is smooth enough to flow out of the piping. (Directions will be on the packaging – Indecently available from A & N Tempanys…) Add colouring if you wish to make it match an occasion or just for fun.

- The key is to concentrate. The second key is don’t worry if its not perfect!! We are not all master bakers! Play around and create shapes to your hearts content. Then add your sprinkles! Enjoy!

The big names in Irish fashion displaying there work and how a young talented Curator Lizzie Glendinning who got theTanzania exhibition for London Fashion Week together with little or no budget.

*IRISH designers showcasing this season’s new collections on the runway have taken London Fashion Week by storm.Orla Kiely, Brendan Courtney, Sonya Lennon, Jonathan William Anderson and John Rocha are some of the heavyweights ofthe fashion world to have offered their inspiring lines to the fashion-forward audiences. Saturday was a busy day for Irish designers, with Dublin native Orla Kiely leading the way. We got to talk with Orla before the show she was overjoyed with the good responses from the her new collection she tells Focus Magazine that she has always been inspired by 60’s fashion and this is always portrayed in all her collections. Orla is also a big supported of fair trade so this makes us want to buy her garments even more. The Dublin-born designer, best known for her popular 60s-ish prints of leaves and vines, ditched a traditional runway and went for a square show space set up to look like a corner in the park for her Saturday show at London Fashion Week. That set the scene for a show inspired by “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” the classic movie starring Catherine Deneuve. Models wearing sweet polka dot dresses, retro floral print tunics, preppy trouser suits and clunky Mary-Jane shoes ( range at Clarks even feature her signature leaf logo on the soles) wandered dreamily around as if in a living storybook. Some models looked up at imaginary rainclouds in the distance, while others daydreamed on the bench. Clear plastic

umbrellas came out as the soundtrack and light effects simulated a rainstorm, interspersed whimsically with meows and barks. It was irresistibly fun, and the pet animal theme continued on printed sweaters and little cat and dog clutch bags. One model even hugged a sleepy black pooch. Everything about this collection was delicate and desirable: the trim tailoring, coiffed hair, live singer and twee garden benches (not to mention the puppy that appeared in models arms.) Kiely gave us a collection with an impressively fabulous feminine feel. We thank Orla for her giving her time to talk to us.

ROCHA’S COLLECTION WAS ALL ABOUT THE ROMANCEFinding inspiration in the dusk dark light of Icelandic skies and revisiting his love of the work of Pierre Soulages, John Rocha Autumn Winter 14 is an exploration of romanticism. Throughout the collection surfaces were worked in wonderful techniques: hand crochets, appliquéd velvet winter florals and scattered cutwork leaves. Decadent materials such as velvets, chiffons and silks abounded on circular around the neck ruffs worn assymetric down the body, the key colours blacks, dusky greys and forest greens. There were plenty of low-key creations, but Rocha’sshow-stepping outfit was his final dress, made up of a network of oval medallions of black patent crocheted together.

Focus ON BEAUTY

This is the perfect time of year to start thinking about treatments that work well to shed off winter skin. This month we will be talking about Laser hair removal, pedicures, waxing and facial peels.

Laser hair removal is where an area of hair on the body or face is treated with a laserbeam. Laser hair removal works really effectively on darker hairs to stop hair growth. Many different areas can be treated and a patch test and consultation are required before beginning treatment. This treatment is perfect to start during the cooler months as the treatment is undertaken every 4-6 weeks and works best when the client is not exposed to the sun - a typical treatment course can be anything from 6-20 sessions depending on hormone levels and hair growth stages and rates every person is different but with medical

grade laser treatments most clients will see a significant reduction in hair growth after two sessions. IPL is a version of hair reduction but is a different treatment to medical grade laser - medical grade lasers are used in Therapie in Galway and Bella Beauty in Ballina. These treatments have become much more affordable in recent years and most salons do offer payment plans. Bella beauty is offering a free bikini line or underarm with every half leg laser course booked this month.

Harley Waxing - It is time to start thinking about baring our skin again and getting our waxing back on track after a winter break. Harley wax is an oil based waxing system that reduces pain, impact on the skin and ensures a huge reduction in hair breakage when waxing meaning a longer smooth result. Specials in the salon this month include a

Pedicures - our feet have remained hidden for the past few months and as the sun starts peaking out from behind the clouds we need to start thinking of showing our feet off again for the better months - hard skin and unmaintained nails and cuticles are the starting point for most people in early spring but this can be easily rectified with a good pedicure or callus peel this month we are offering a spa pedicure in our American chair with shellac polish for 50 euro.

Facial peels - the skin tends to be extremely dry and dehydrated at this time of year after a winter of indoor heating and over indulgence followed by January detoxing. Some really nice therapy for the skin to get it prepped for the spring and ensure your products are penetrating your deepest layers is investing in a professional facial peel. There are a number of different options available but the most popular are glycolic peels or our multi vitamin

power peel from Dermalogica. A course of facial peels is recommended to get the best anti ageing results. Our facial peel ranges are on special offer this month for 60 euro.

Focus Magazine asked Lizzie how she got it all together with no budget?Glendinning tells us ‘The materials for the exhibition were donated, the lights were leant to us - we were very lucky. Tanzania have the passion and drive to create a platform for their emerging creative talent, but unfortunately the infrastructure was not quite there, which is why the International Fashion Showcase is such a wonderful programme in allowing all these countries the opportunity to showcase and promote their new designers, and demonstrate the vibrant culture of their nation through an exhibition of dress.’ Thanks to supporting and talented Curator like Lizzie the show was an absolute success and an eye opener to discover talented Fashion Designers. ON MUSIC

I remember holding the album sleeve, fascinated as I listened. Rory Gallagher’s ‘Against The Grain’ Rory humbed along to the sound of his slide against the strings on his guitar, playing his take

on an old Bo Carter song - All Around Man. I had never heard anything like it before, a class act. After playing in a few different bands over the years which always included playing some Rory, the opportunity arose to form a band to celebrate Rory’s music, a band that we called The Mississippi Sheiks“ ‘The Mississippi Sheiks‘ originated from the west coast of Ireland. They are an energetic, hard working and dedicated power trio who are sharing Rory Gallagher’s music around at every giving opportunity, these guys continue to be inspired by Rory’s life and music. With a great start to the year which kicked off in Cruiser’s Bar Foxford, it was the beginning of a journey that takes them all around Ireland with dates in Donegal, Sligo, Galway, Clare

and Dublin.

The Band:Adrian Mangan (Guitar and vocals) Damien Mangan (Bass)John Crean (Drums)

With annual festivals in ( France, Germany, Norway, Holland and even as far away as Japan as well as his hometown of Ballyshannon) dedicated to this Irish musical icon, its testament to the effect Rory’s musical influence has had on peoples lives throughout the world. And so the band would like to thank everyone for all their support “ Its a great joy to bring Rory’s music to such wonderful audiences “ and they look forward to playing for you all very soon. Check out the band on Facebook/The Mississippi Sheiks to find out the next time they play near you.

NON-STOP RIDE ALONG

NEED FOR SPEED

Starring: Liam Neeson & Julianne Moore

Bill Marks is a burned-out veteran of the Air Marshals service. He views the assignment not as a life-saving duty, but as a desk job in the sky. However, today’s flight will be no rou-tine trip. Shortly into the transatlantic journey from New York to London, he receives a series of mysterious text messages ordering him to have the government transfer $150 million into a secret account, or a passenger will die every 20 minutes.

For the past two years, high-school security guard Ben has been trying to show decorated APD detective James that he’s more than just a video-game junkie who’s unworthy of James’ sister, Angela. When Ben finally gets accept-ed into the academy, he thinks he’s earned the seasoned policeman’s respect and asks for his blessing to marry Angela. Knowing that a ride along will demonstrate if Ben has what it takes to take care of his sister, James invites him on a shift designed to scare the hell out of the trainee. But when the wild night leads them to the most notorious criminal in the city, James will find that his new partner’s rapid-fire mouth is just as dangerous as the bullets speeding at it.

Based on the extremely popular game of the same name our story sees a framed convict, fresh from prison on a mission. A street racer who was framed by a wealthy business asso-ciate joins a cross country race with revenge in mind. His ex-partner, learning of the plan, places a massive bounty on his head as the race begins.

HEALTH PRODUCT REVIEW

foody’s pharmacy‘I have always been fascinated by the inestimable power of plants..from which

day after day, have inspired my beauty philosophy and helped me build the NUXE brand’ Aliza Jabes - President and CEO of NUXE Group.

NUXE is a French skin care range of natural origin products with no parabens or mineral oils. The range is largely inspired by the science of plants and nature. With a range to suit every skin type and concern, it’s no wonder NUXE is among the leading skincare brands in Europe. A personal favourite of mine is the Nuxel-lence Jeunesse Youth and Radiance Revealing Fluid.

This amazing product contains 10 active patents which each work to make the skin look more radiant, glowing, and youthful. After a long day at work my skin usually looks very dull and tired; I love nothing more than washing my face with NUXE Micellar Water and gently massaging the Nuxellence Fluid on my skin. After a long week, or midweek I use the Creme Fraiche Masque on my skin which com-pletely transforms my dull and lacklustre skin into a glowing and rested looking canvas. It makes my skin feel incredibly soft also!

This month why not try out the NUXE range, because when you buy Two or more products (one to be anti-ageing) you receive a FREE Creme Fraiche

Mask worth over e25! Call in for samples and/or advice on the range that will most suit your skin type.

This month I thought id write about the subject of money management. Why? Well nothing is worse for you everyday health than the stress caused by money worries. Lets see if the we can lift a little of

that load of your shoulders. The adage “Money is the root of all evil” is a well known phrase today however is this the case? . When managed properly, however, money can be a useful tool. There are so many offering advice these days as to how to manage or what steps to take to avoid mismanagement, These often contain good practical advice that can help you to manage money wisely. The following five steps are commonly recommended by financial advisers, and they are consistent with principles recorded in the Bible long ago.Save. Most financial planners encourage saving. Make saving a priority. As soon as you get paid, deposit the amount you wish to save in a bank or other location for safekeeping. That will help you to fight any temptation to spend those funds.

Budget. This is the only practical way to monitor, control, or reduce your spending. A good budget can give you a sense of where your money goes, and it can help you to reach your financial goals. Know what your income is, and spend less than you earn. SImple really. Learn the difference between needs and wants. Avoid unnecessary debt!

Plan. Carefully consider your future needs. For instance, if you are brave enough to plan to purchase a house or an apartment, obtaining a mortgage at a reasonable rate may be a good decision. Shop around. You may find the need to purchase life, health, disability, or other forms of insurance to protect your family in the case of the unforeseen, again shop around. Considering your needs for the future may also involve planning for retirement.

Learn.Invest in yourself by acquiring skills and taking care of your physical and emotional health. These are investments that will pay you back. Make learning a lifelong habit. Retraining is the buzz word these days. Find out about the opportunities for the new internship the government is operating.

Balance. Keep money in its place. Survey after survey shows that those who care more about people than they do about money are happier. Some allow greed to throw them off balance. How so? After adequately satisfying their basic needs, they embark on the pursuit of riches. Yet, beyond food, clothing, and shelter, how much does a person really need? Cultivating contentment prevents us from developing the love of money and all the problems that come along with it.

When managed properly, however, money can provide you with the freedom to pursue the more important things in life, such as a enjoying time with family and friends.

Your wedding day is going to be one of the most special times of your life, and it can feel like a dream going through all the motions of selecting a venue, booking a band, choosing flowers. However you need

to remember that when you book your wedding venue, you are entering into a business agreement. It is important to ask as many questions as possible to ensure you are not going to be left with any surprises on the day. Here are some things to bear in mind when you meet with a venue co-ordinator:

- Do you have our preferred date available? Will there be another wedding taking place in the venue on that day?

- Do you cater for guests with special dietary requirements, such as diabetics, coelics or severe food allergies?

- If we deliver additional items such as favours and decorations, will the venue be able to set these up for us or will we need to arrange this?

- Is there an additional charge for bar extensions?

Are there any noise restrictions in the area?

- Do you provide a residents’ bar? Until what time?

Bear in mind that your venue is trying to make a profit and need to cover their costs too; if the price of your package is lower than other venues, they may be compromising on the quality of food or staff. If you have made special agreements with the co-ordinator, ensure you get everything in writing so there are no questions later if there is a change in management. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask your venue co-ordinator for help or recommendations; they will have a great range of contacts in the wedding industry and may be able to help you save money elsewhere.

GARDENING

TIPS ON KEEPING HOUSE PLANTS

Most houseplants will thrive in a well-lit, draught-free spot with an even temperature and reasonably high humidity. However some plants have specific needs. For instance, flowering plants and those with variegated foliage need more light than plants with plain green foliage, while ferns like a darker position. Cacti, succulents and carnivorous plants like a bright windowsill, but avoid putting on a south-facing sill in summer, where they could scorch. Orchids prefer bright, indirect light and if possible, lots of fresh air and high humidity. Generally, if growth is poor and spindly, flowering plants are shy to flower or variegated plants revert to plain green, improve the light conditions.

Then sit back and enjoy nature from the comfort of your own home

ON TRAVEL

Now, I’ve told this story before but it is a new audience reading now. And so I will tell again! Point number 1 - The holiday starts as soon as you leave the drive way! As we left it felt like we were on the plane

to Malaga, minus the sunglasses and sombrero.

First Stop. WESTPORT. Have you visited Westport? Maybe for a day out with visitors. Is it realistic to begin a holiday so close to home? Remember point number 1. We stayed at the Hotel Westport for the first night and it couldn’t have gone better. After a basic collapse in the afternoon we hit the pool. Kids loved it! Afterward they joined up with the ‘Panda Club’ where they played games and watched a DVD while my good wife and I took a trip into town for a bite to eat at one of the many excellent restaurants that are on offer before retiring shattered. Next morning a splash in the pool, breakfast and out for a trip to Westport House. The weather was kind and the whole family had great day. From fair rides to swan boats on the lake followed by the customary tour of the house itself, all were left satisfied. Car packed. Where next?

Stop Number 2. GALWAYThis is where the real adventure begins. We had decided that part of our trip would include camping. My other half’s worst nightmare. We managed to find a camping site right in the centre of town, although you wouldn’t have guessed from the view across the bay. Camping stove lit, we played games and read books like they must have back in the days before.

Stop Number 3. KILLARNEYWe are already frequent visitors to Killarney as our best friends of many years are there, however this is the first time as an official holiday. One word. Relaxation. A few glasses of wine, good company…. The weather was picking up too. We took a trip down to Kenmare for a spot of Seal Watching (www.seafariireland.com) face painting for the kids and drop of brandy for the adults and a view all the seal

pups and some wild horses. And it turned out that my wife’s great, great grandfather was a blacksmith in on of the villages near by! By village I mean a house. We just happened to mention it to one of the locals and it turned out to be the next door neighbor An extra treat. Where to next?

Stop Number 3. KINSALECamping again. Although our first trip was a day out to Fota Wildlife Park in Cobh. Basically a large park with freely roaming animals, a great family day out and again all within our own shore. We then camped up for a couple of nights just past Kinsale, a very touristy type place but hey, we were tourists. From that base we spent some time checking out the southern shores including a day in Kinsale itself. Its small streets and corner cafes really give you the ‘holiday’ feel. Again the weather is being kind to us so maybe rose tinting a little, however the hospitality is not weather dependent and is superb.

Stop Number 4 - ARKLOWA strange choice you may think. But we had our reasons. Not actually Arklow, but a small village called Courtown, just off from Gorey. Its a small tourist (that word again) village that caters for the Dublin holiday makers. A kind of Blackpool meets Bray kind of place.

Then its time to get home. Tired but satisfied.

ISSUE 01 59

It’s a common myth (yes lads, myth!) that girls are useless when it comes to car maintenance, car knowledge and, well, just cars in general! Well we’re here to give that myth the boot and help some of you who are a bit ‘less informed’ when it

comes to what’s going on between the wheels!

- Firstly – Ditch the heels.. Flats make for easier driving

Running out…It may sound a little bit silly but the ‘E’ on your petrol gauge does not stand for ‘enough’! If you’re running on empty find the nearest petrol station and top up. Not only is it bad for the ‘woman driver’ image if you get caught out without fuel, it’s not good for your engine either!

It’s a car... not a wardrobe! Now I do feel like a bit of a hypocrite with this tip because I am the first to ‘misplace’ a coat or a pair of shoes only for them to turn up in the boot of my car but here goes anyway! The more weight you’re carrying around the more fuel you’re using, and therefore, the more it’s gonna cost you! Take one day a week and empty out the contents of your car. Just think, with what you save on wasted petrol you could end up with enough for a whole new wardrobe!

Oil do it tomorrow...Checking your oil level is one thing that you should definitely not put off! Basically, if your car runs out of oil, the engine will have no lubrication, seize up and die, leaving you with a car that doesn’t work and a hefty mechanic’s bill. Checking your oil once a month can prevent this. Make sure your car has been stopped for 5 minutes or so (the engine turned off!), open the bonnet, pull out the dipstick from the engine then wipe and replace, pull it out again - the oil level should be between the minimum and maximum marks. If it’s not, top it up. It’s wheely easy! It’s inevitable, you’re going to have to get down and

dirty with your car at least once in your lifetime so it’s best to know exactly what to do when you’ve got a flat! First things first, make sure your car is parked on flat ground and out of the way of traffic and turn on your hazard lights - apply the handbrake and get everyone out of the car! Remove the spare wheel (usually found under the lovely piece of carpet that lines your boot) and find the jacking point on your car (details should be in the manual!). Before jacking the car, loosen all the nuts on the flat wheel by using the wheel brace. Use the jack that came with your car and turn the handle clockwise to raise the car until the flat tyre is off the ground. Still with me? Good! Remove the wheel with the flat tyre, put the spare wheel on, put the wheel nuts on until they’re finger tight and then tighten them with the wheel brace. Lower the car to the ground by turning the handle on the jack anti-clockwise then tighten the wheel nuts more securely. That’s it, you’re done! Just drive carefully as spare tyres don’t tend to have the same durability as the tyre you would’ve had on your car previously!
