This was a truly amazing month for us here at FOCUS Magazine! We were honored at the Tavares Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Red Carpet Gala by being named the Small Business of the Year for 2011.

We had been nominated before and were up against such a long list of wonderful businesses this year, I really didn’t expect to win. I really cannot express how much it meant to me. To be nominated and voted on by other business leaders in this community is truly an honor.

I was caught off guard when they called our name and I failed to thank a few people. First of all, my family; I am incredibly blessed to have a supportive husband and son. They put up with the long hours and my insane crankiness at press time. Paul has kept my spirits up when things were rough and constantly tells me he is proud of me. Dylan has become more involved with the magazine as my intern and has even done some writing for us. Both of them were with me back in the early days when we drove around in the middle of the night and delivered the magazines! I love you guys!

I also want to thank my team. I am lucky to work with so many talented people who just pitch in and get the job done every month. chamber happeningsEustisLake Mechanical Contractors, Inc. sponsored the Lake Eustis Area Chamber of Commerce monthly member breakfast on September 8, 2011. Nearly 90 people were on hand to hear the guest speaker, Bill Herrle who is the Florida Executive Director of the National Federation of Independent Business. In addition, the chamber continued the new agenda segment “Minding Your Business” that brings local, county and state leaders to the breakfast for updates on issues affecting members. Florida State Representative Larry Metz spoke to the group about the most recent legislative session andfielded questions from the group. The September Lunch & Learn Seminar was conducted by Wendy Lyn Phillips. The topic, “Top Notch Tips for Keen Kustomer Service” drew 18 people. Phillips’ remarks identified ways that personal images can have positive or negative effects on repeat customers. Held at Michael’s At A Third Place, attendees learned techniques for using “image” as yet another marketing tool to increase sales.

The month’s activities also included 2 Business After Hours events, both on September 22nd. A multi-chamber event was held at Mid Florida Eye in Mt. Dora and featured door prizes, hors d’oeuvres, champagne punch and soft drinks. Members who attended were able to meet with staff, see thefacilities, and hear about the variety of services offered at the center. The second event was held at RE/MAX Realty in Eustis.

Nearly 90 people were in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony. In addition, a “Making Your House A Home - Business Expo” offered additional networking opportunitiesfor Chamber members.

Mount DoraOn Saturday, November 12th, the Mount Dora Chamber will host their 2nd Annual Mount Dora Chili/Grilled Cheese cook-off. The fun is from noon until 7pm. The cook-off will be held in downtown Mount Dora at the Main Street Leasing Events Center located at the corner of 5th Avenue and McDonald Street. Only 18 entrants will be accepted. Entry fees are $50 per team. Judging is at 2:30pm by a panel of judges. First, second, and third place trophies will be presented. Entrants must provide 10 gallons of chili or 100 grilled cheese sandwiches for public tasting. Public can purchase an armband for $5 to sample. Proceeds will benefit the Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce.

TavaresThe Tavares Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed their newest member business to the community with a Red Ribbon Cutting Ceremony; Baytree Executive Golf Course Café. Located at 129 Juniper Way, on Dead River Road, the café offers a beautiful view of the lush green fairway. Sheryl Klein, General Manager and Travis Senning, Chef were awesome hosts to the nearly 100 folks who joined in celebrating the Café to the community. Heavy rains created an ideal Rugged Maniac race course in Southwich, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 24th. “There wasn’t an inch of that course that wasn’t an uphill, ankle or knee deep in mud or some sort or obstacle. It was the most intense and challenging mud run that I have ever done” says Rick Copley of Eustis who finished first in the championship wave and first overall. His time for the 5k obstacle run was 24:53. Rick is the owner and founder of Your Best Fitness Coach in Eustis. Our very own FOCUS dog, Spencer celebrated his 13th Birthday on October 5th with a Birthday party with all of his four-legged friends at The Green K9. The Signature event of the year for Tavares Chamber of Commerce; the Gala was a huge success in celebrating the continued growth and achievements of the Tavares Business community during these challenging times. Lake Receptions was the setting for this sold out event. In attendance were representatives of the Tavares Business community, City of Tavares dignitaries, and Representative Larry Metz. Jeff and Connie Gay of Dreamland Productions bring their twenty plus years of creating theatrical productions

to Downtown Tavares with their Floating Ghosts Séance Tour. Connie says, “We have always had a fascination with history and mystery. Hence, historical ghosts!”

The ninety-minute tour starts at sundown at the Train Station, where guests are greeted by the entertaining ghost hosts for the evening, Cecil McKnight and Divina. Cecil’s special “spirit tracker” invention alerts the hosts to the presence of spirits as the ghost-hunting group treks its way through Wooton Park and along the shoreline of Lake Dora, and up Main Street. The ghost hosts share stories about the history of the area and then

attempt to make contact with some of the historical figures with the help of the group.

Many of the Tavares’ founding figures make appearances, such as Chief Billy Bowlegs, Clara Adams, and Captain Melton Haynes. A ghostly alligator, Toste, even plays a part.

The theatrical evening is filled with audience participation, lots of laughter, and is an entertaining way to learn more about the town’s past, as the stories are based on actual history, yet dramatized for your entertainment pleasure.

There is a rest stop halfway through the tour, where guests can rest, go the bathroom, or get a drink from one of the local restaurants,

The Community Foundation of South Lake (CFSL) has awarded a grant to the FAITH Neighborhood Center (FNC) to be used for utility support for low income families throughout South Lake County. Families in danger of having their utilities cut off can receive support through this award. Bruce Greer, Executive Director of the Community Foun-dation and Anita Geraci-Caver Grant Committee Chair presented the award of a $4,000 grant to Dawn Scott, FNC Board President while Paul Jacobson, CFSL Program Manager looked on.The FAITH Neighborhood Center provides free assistance to about 800 families each month throughout South Lake County. Support includes food, clothes, and fi nancial support (as funds are available) for rent, utilities, and medical treatment. In addition, the Center in partnership with several Lake County agencies is offering life skills training. Sessions, dealing with a variety of subjects, are being held at the Edge Memorial Methodist Church in Groveland. The Center also awards several scholarships for academic and job related training. We’ve worked very hard all year, and as the final quarter of the year approaches, the time has come

community. The Kiwanis Club of South Lake Foundation helps to usher in autumn with the Fruit of the Vine Wine Tasting Gala. September 24th marked the 6th annual gala of wine sampling to help serve the children of the world, this year raising

funds for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake and Sumter counties.

Checking in to the Heritage Hills country club, the glitz and glamour of attire and accoutrements might have been distracting until guests were offered the opportunity to win a 1 carat diamond. Valued at $3100, the diamond would be hidden in a sea of cubic zirconium stones, corresponding to tickets sold and each ticket holder got to pick what they thought was the “diamond in the rough,” for a $50 donation. Once everyone made their pick, diamond specialist, Jim Johnson, of Village Goldsmith, would verify the diamond and determine the winner. Co-chair, Linda Sheets spent the evening checking guests in, and eyeing the diamond. She was duly awarded when Johnson authenticated her pick, “I can’t believe I won!” and proudly added, “I’m here to serve the kids!”

The silent auction offers a plethora of donated items to suit all desires and fancies. There were thirty-one items on the list this year, including a picture album basket, Carrabas gift certificates, Images of Clermont book by Doris Bloodsworth and lunch with her, and a three-month Lunar Wine Club membership to extend your wine sampling. Also on the auction block were practical items like an 1/8 page advertising certificate in FOCUS, a $250 LSCC scholarship, and the 2011 Road Atlas. From home décor and art, to jewelry and personal accessories, the silent auction offers the occasion to treat yourself to something you may not seek out, and donate to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake and Sumter counties.

The Boys & Girls Clubs are designed to mentor teens and steer them from influences that can lead them down a path to an unproductive future. Lake County leads the six county areas in teen births, high

school student smokers, and overweight high school students. By focusing on five core areas including character and leadership development; the arts; sports, fitness and recreation; health and life skills; and education and career development, the Boys & Girls Clubs have been able to achieve positive results and help teens “realize their full potentials as productive, responsible and caring citizens.”

Characteristically, Bacchus Vino Etcetera and Cheeser’s Palace brought a marvelous menu to the evening. The pairing of the pumpkin spice bites in white or dark chocolate with Bodegas Toro Albala Don PX Gran Reserva was spectacular. Wine representative, Troy Sartor, explained that the Pedro Ximenez (PX) grapes used to make the dessert sherry are typically left on straw mats for three or four months before they are squeezed because, “If it’s left on a flat surface, the grapes will rot.” Besides exposure to wine tastings, the story behind a wine draws enthusiasts to a bottle. Keith Mullins of Bacchus Vino donated 15% of the proceeds from orders made from purchases during the evening.

Kiwanis of South Lake meets Thursday morning’s at Cheeser’s Palace, and committee members suggest creative fund raisers like the diamond draw, and are searching for a “brick and mortar organization” for upcoming events. President Richard Chapman would like Kiwanis membership to increase because they “will continue to be a part of what makes South Lake a great place to live.”

Even the exercise part can be replaced with medications which can be administered intravenously for literally a few seconds. Th e time honored echocardiogram is typically performed by imaging the heart with ultrasound from outside the body, but can be performed with even greater clarity from inside the body using a trans-esophageal ultrasound probe with the patient mildly sedated. Advances in imaging the coronary arteries have repeatedly been front page news. For example, multi-slice CT angiography can non-invasively create a

Success rates with current generation stents are nearly 100% and recurrence rates have fallen from nearly 50% to less than 5%!

One area that has been advanced by technology perhaps more than any other is that of electrophysiology. Current day pacemakers and defi brillators are remarkably sophisticated and clinically eff ective. Even better, many patients can now undergo radio-frequency ablation procedures that cure them of their arrhythmias! Success rates continue to rise and procedure times have decreased dramatically in the past few

years. In summary, nearly every diagnostic and therapeutic area of cardiology has been revolutionized by technological advances.

FOCUS: What is the single best piece of advice for a Healthy Heart your doctors give?

MFCS: Act sensibly! Eat sensibly. Exercise sensibly. Avoid behaviors, like smoking, which make no sense! Better yet, if you have symptoms that might be due to heart disease, or have risk factors for heart disease such as hypertension, diabetes or abnormal cholesterol levels, do the sensible thing -- see a cardiologist for a check-up!

MFCS: Follow the old adage -- if you think you might need to see a cardiologist, you do! Visits can be for preventative care such as evaluating and treating hypertension or high cholesterol levels or perhaps having a CT scan of the coronary arteries to see if that family history of heart disease is catching up to you faster than you think. Other visits can be in response to symptoms that may be due to cardiovascular disease such as chest discomfort (especially associated with exercise), shortness of breath, palpitations, lightheaded spells or dizziness, pain in the legs when walking, or stroke-like symptoms. Sometimes patients may have simple tests such as an EKG in a primary doctor’s offi ce which comes back abnormal and warrants further investigation with a cardiologist. Th e bottom line is that if you’re not feeling well with any of these types of symptoms, it is better to be safe than sorry and to be evaluated by a cardiologist sooner rather than later

announced the appointment of John Moore as chief executive offi cer, eff ective

October 1. Eating healthy means taking a second glance at labels and doing a bit of research. Look for foods that are high in Omega 3 fatty acids, such as salmon, fl axseed and oatmeal. Th is essential fatty acid helps to reduce infl ammation from chronic diseases. Protein such as lean, skinless poultry and beans and legumes contain the highest source of soluble fi ber. Increase your intake of whole grains. You have the added benefi t of fi ber in your diet, plus you feel fuller longer. Stay away from saturated fats and trans fats, like those found in butters and instead try olive or canola oil which are monounsaturated fats. Boost your antioxidants with bright colored fruits and vegetables—they are a natural way to reduce cholesterol levels. Reduce your intake of sodium-laden foods and meats and resolve to eat more natural, fresher and organic diet.

Everyone deals with stress in their life, but when it goes unmanaged, chronic stress may lead to heart disease or it may make the symptoms of heart disease worsen. When

A person is standing next to you at a concert or walking across a conference room or sitting across from you in

a restaurant and without any warning whatsoever, they collapse to the fl oor. Th ey have stopped breathing and have no pulse. In an instant they are dead.It happens just that fast. In fact, it happens to one person every two minutes in the United States.Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the United States, killing approximately 325,000 people each year. SCA occurs when the hearts normal rhythm becomes rapid and chaotic (quivering), which prevents the heart from pumping blood eff ectively to the vital organs. Victims of SCA CAN be saved, but only if a defi brillator is immediately available to deliver an electric shock. Th e shock restores the heart to a normal rhythm. Once the victim goes down, the chance of survival drops considerably with every minute that passes and an estimated 95% of the victims of SCA die before they receive emergency medical help. Decades ago a victim’s only chance would have been for an ambulance to get there in time. Today however, Automated External Defi brillators (AED’s) are readily available, especially in public places, and are becoming more commonplace. An AED is a small, lightweight, portable machine which will deliver a life-saving electric shock. You will see them in Airports and Shopping Malls,

at the Disney parks and resorts. In the State of Florida they are also mandated in dental practices and most assisted living facilities.Everybody’s AED is a distributor of the HeartSine Samaritan PAD Defi brillator and owner, Graham Wells is making it his personal mission to see AEDs placed in as many public locations as possible. getting his socks on we both sat down on the couch in front of the TV. On the TV was a program about rockets that caught our attention. love of music and performing began when he was in middle school in Hilo, Hawaii. He started out as a drummer and played with various bands throughout his high school years. After graduation from Hilo High School in 1972, he was employed as a performer at a local Hawaiian resort. He continued to play at resorts with various bands before moving to Seattle in 1974. Mike went on to meet his wife, Julie, and they had four sons.

In 1997, they were living back in Hawaii when wanderlust struck. Th e whole Madawi clan hit the road in an RV. Th ey started in California and toured through thirty-eight states, traversing the continental US four times before settling down. Th ey found themselves enjoying winters in Florida and decided to make Clermont their permanent home, building a house there in 2000. Back to work for Mike!

His love of music had never died and gave birth to Smooth Musical Entertainment. Put an end to the old DJ versus band debate. With Mike, you get the best of both worlds. While he has the equipment and extensive music collection any good DJ would have, Mike also performs vocally.

So, your son or daughter has just turned 18 years old, a “new” adult. Turning 18, the “age of majority” in Florida,

is one of many milestones to come and is generally when one legally becomes an adult. A person under 18 can become an adult via a legal process called “emancipation.” Emancipation is not exactly an easy process, however, once completed the minor, regardless that he is under the age of 18, will also be an adult without the benefit of being protected under the laws as a minor. Parents and new adults should be aware that along with the joys of being an adult, there are

many new legal responsibilities.

What can new adults do? Well, they are still legally too young to drink alcohol, as you must be 21 years old in Florida. However, the new adult may now vote, enter into contracts, make a Last Will and Testament, consent to medical treatment without the approval of the parent and may live independently, outside of the parent’s control. Sounds great. BUT, slow down, stop and think. The new adult will also be responsible and charged as an adult for any crimes he commits, even if they are with

their buddies who are still only 16 or 17 years old. Although minors could be charged as an adult depending on the seriousness of the crime, what may be a slap on the wrist for the 17 year old for “kids horsing around” may end up being big trouble for the new adult, leading to a criminal record which can follow the new adult around for the rest of his life. For example, illegally setting off a fire extinguisher could actually lead to felony charges. Additionally, the new adult is also now required to support himself as it is no longer the parents legal responsibility unless there is a court order stating otherwise. For the 18 year old new adult, males must also register for the selective service.

Just because a new adult “can buy a car” without the parent’s consent, does not mean he should not seek the parents advise. New adults may not always be experienced enough to understand that buying a car is a legal contract, binding, with legal ramifications. The new adult can sue on his own behalf and be sued. Samples of the types of contracts a new adult can enter into when just a day earlier he could not included school loans, car loans, employment contracts and rental contracts. The new adult needs to know that

to be legally binding, some contracts may be verbal with nothing in writing. Whether written or verbal, the new adult needs to be sure that he understands the terms of what is expected of him prior to entering into the contract.

The new adult also needs to understand what it is to have “good” credit and the importance of good credit. Unfortunately, many new adults enter into car contracts and credit card contracts without the experience necessary to understand the full responsibilities, having ruined their credit ratings while still in their teens! Bad credit can often take 5 to 7 years to clear up, sometimes even longer. Fortunately, there are ways in which the new adult can start building good credit: Working, paying bills on time, starting a savings account and using credit cards wisely.

New adults should enjoy their new found “freedom” but understand that with freedom comes responsibility.

What’s more American than barbecue? Not many things. At ALS Dockside, customers come by Air, Land, or Sea

to enjoy the delicious slow cooked meat and the traditional southern sides being served up at the waterfront location.As the most recent restaurant to open in the ALS series, Dockside joined ALS Landing and ALS Top Shelf on the banks of Lake Dora in the downtown Tavares Entertainment District. Diners arrive from all over in cars, golf carts, boats, and seaplanes. As the outside dining establishment is located right at the edge of the docks, overlooking the marina, boaters often stop by to get meals to go or to stay and listen to live music while enjoying an ice cold beer on the covered, wrap around deck.ALS Dockside uses a state of the art smoker which keeps the meat at the perfect temperature for the duration of the sixteen hour cooking process. Their menu includes smoked pork, turkey, ribs, chicken, and brisket. While everyone has a favorite, the tender, juicy brisket has quickly grown in popularity. Their menu includes sandwiches, served on a bun or on Texas Toast, which come with choice of a small side or chips. Sandwiches are affordably priced at $6.50. They also have a hot dog ($4.50) and

corndog ($2.50) on the menu, making it popular for families. Their dinner platters include choice of meat with Texas Toast, and two sides starting at just $8.50.The traditional southern side dishes are so good, you’ll think your grandma made them! Along with the barbecue staples, like baked beans and cole slaw, ALS Dockside dishes up creamy macaroni and cheese and turnip greens, cooked up with pieces of their smoked turkey. They offer a combination of homemade and store bought barbecue sauces to compliment your smoky meat of choice! Save room for some of their delicious baked apples, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Wash down the yummy barbecue with one of their ice cold beers or wine coolers. Additionally, since they are located in the Downtown Tavares Entertainment District, guests can get their beverage in a to-go cup and stroll along the waterfront or visit one of the other downtown establishments.ALS Dockside is also now offering Party Packs to go. They come in a variety of sizes and are perfect for family dinners, picnics, or even tailgating! Hoity-Toity Mercantile celebrated a grand opening on October 1st. Located at 121 N. Highland Street

in Mount Dora, the quaint and colorful building is home to a wonderfully eclectic mix of antiques, art, and orchids. Friends and owners, Lou Buigas and Ellen Batchlelor have an eye for the interesting and a passion for repurposing. I mean, who looks at an old rusty rake and says “Th at would make an awesome wine rack”? Or who would think of attaching the base of an old candlestick onto a Mason Jar and calling it a Redneck Wineglass? “Our goal when folks walk into the Hoity-Toity Mercantile is that they are “wowed” with the unique fi nds we have in the shop whether it is an orchid, an antique

or just a great piece of art, that perhaps may even be green.” states Buigas

Everywhere you look you fi nd something of interest. Th ey have a little bit of everything – furniture, lamps, purses, jewelry, candleholders from old license plates, old musical equipment… Th ere is everything from rust (these girls love rust) to feathers and sequins! In the back room is the “Country Store” where you will fi nd the types of items you might have found in an old country general store.
