1 accelerationThe time and effort needed to accelerate a wheel relates to its diameter. A 26R wheel has the least rotating mass so is quickest off the mark. The 29R wheel enjoys the least rolling resistance once underway. A 27R wheel is a compromise of the two.

2 angle of attackThe greater the diameter of a wheel, the smaller its angle of attack to the bumps and obstructions it confronts. Because of this, larger wheels make them easier to overcome.

3 imProVed rolloVerAs with angle of attack, a large diameter wheel offers improved rollover on uneven surfaces. Its greater radius allows it to glide over closely spaced undulations, maintaining momentum and corner speed.

4 WeightA 27R wheel is a popular compromise because it weighs only fractionally more than a 26R wheel of the same construction and tyre type. The weight increase for a 29R over a 27R wheel is around the same as from the small to the mid-size wheel.

5 more tractionThe bigger the wheel, the greater the area of tyre surface it presents to the terrain. The greater this contact patch, the more traction the rider has. Because of this, large wheels offer better steering and braking.

6 momentumLarge diameter wheels are best at maintaining momentum. Although harder to accelerate initially, their greater mass along with smaller attack angle and improved rollover keep you moving on rough terrain.

1 BeschleunigungDie Zeit und der Kraftaufwand, die zur Beschleunigung eines Laufrads erforderlich sind, hängen von dessen Durchmesser ab. Ein 26R-Laufrad besitzt die geringste Rotationsmasse und reagiert somit am schnellsten. Das 29R-Laufrad profitiert vom geringsten Rollwiderstand, sobald es einmal in Bewegung ist. Ein 27R-Laufrad stellt „die goldene Mitte“ zwischen beiden dar.

2 angriffsWinkelJe größer der Durchmesser des Rades ist, desto kleiner ist sein Angriffswinkel bei auftretenden Unebenheiten oder Hindernissen. Mit größeren Laufrädern lassen sich diese deshalb leichter überwinden.

3 Besseres aBrollVerhaltenEin weiterer Vorteil eines Laufrades mit großem Durchmesser ist das bessere Abrollverhalten auf unebenen Flächen. Durch den größeren Radius kann das Rad über dicht aufeinanderfolgende Unebenheiten gleiten und dabei Dynamik und Kurven-geschwindigkeit aufrechterhalten.

4 geWichtEin 27R-Laufrad ist beliebt, da es nur minimal mehr wiegt als die 26R-Variante gleicher Bauart mit gleichem Reifentyp. Der Gewichtsunterschied zwischen einem 29R- und einem 27R-Laufrad entspricht in etwa dem zwischen einem kleinen und einem mittelgroßen Laufrad.

5 mehr traktionJe größer das Laufrad ist, desto größer ist die Reifenfläche, die den Boden berührt. Je größer diese Kontaktfläche ist, desto mehr Traktion hat der Fahrer. Aus diesem Grund ermöglichen große Reifen besseres Lenken und Bremsen.

6 dYnamikGroße Raddurchmesser eignen sich am besten, um die Dynamik aufrechtzuerhalten. Trotz erschwerter Beschleunigung in der Startphase behälst du dank größerer Masse, kleinerem Anstell-winkel und besserem Abrollverhalten auf rauem Gelände deine Schwungkraft bei.
