The Wedding Free Zone

Those of us who were working at the Spring Fair on Saturday 19th May had much to contend with in terms of competition from a wedding, and two cup finals, but we still made a sum of £1500 for the day.

There was a wedding free zone in the Session Room where the trains were running for all to see, and we would like to thank all who visited us, and stayed for a chat, although not so easy this time due to lack of staff.

The little railway town of Ochitildhu (say it slowly!) was able to contribute more the Spring Fair than in recent years, including donations given to augment our door takings.

The secrets out now and those who visited noticed quite clearly that the town of Ochitildhu is based on, but not a copy or model of, Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae. Of course it never had, nor will it have, a railway but that’s model railways for you.

The Russell Wedding

A very lucky Ginger lad is to marry a beautiful brunette girl and share the rest of their lives together. They want to share a day with friends and family and celebrate 'the happiest day of their lives'... now that's enough about what happened to Prince Harry and Megan, because there is another wedding this year that means a little more to me!

Yes, this year after 11 years of dating, Colette and I will get married here in Stamperland Church on Saturday 30th June. We are both really looking forward to our day, the first day of spending the rest of our lives together.

Throughout our relationship we have had fantastic support from everyone in the church and I am really grateful to our church family for making Colette feel very welcome with us in Stamperland church. As you all know this church means a lot to me, having been 'brought up' in and baptised here, coming through Sunday School, Boys Brigade and then becoming a member and elder as an adult. I am really proud to be able to get married here and for Colette and I to start life as a married couple in Stamperland.

Colette and I have large families and we both have lots of friends and we are having a pretty large wedding with numbers reaching around 190 by our evening reception. Unfortunately we cannot invite everyone on the day but we would like to invite all of our friends from the church to celebrate with us on Sunday 8th July in the large hall after morning worship. We would love it if you will come and share a sandwich, some cake and some fellowship with us.

A wedding takes a lot of planning and we would like to thank Rev Scott Blythe for his help and advice in chatting to us about what marriage is all about and helping us to put together an order of service for the day. We hope that our wedding is the first of many that Rev Blythe will conduct here in Stamperland.

Everyone is welcome to come along and see us getting married on the day. It will be nice to see as many of our church friends there to share in our day. The wedding is at 12 noon, so please come along, find a seat and meet some of our friends and families and I hope to see you the following Sunday for lunch and fellowship in the hall on the 8th of July!

Best Wishes Scott Russell

Our Annual display was held on Friday 4th May when all the boys enjoyed their night. . This was followed by our annual Millport trip which took place on Saturday 12th May which brought our activities to close for session 2017/18.

Here is a review of how our year has gone. We now have 31 boys in total in the Junior Section and Sparks which is 10 more than we had on the role at this same time last year. The increase in numbers has been very encouraging and is something we are keen to continue over the next few years. The boys and our parents are the best source of 'advertising' we have. Boys have come along this year because their friend was also a member who enjoyed what the 231st had to offer. Thanks to all those who have encouraged their boys to bring along a friend and please feel invite other boys along to the BB if you think they would be interested

As everyone may be aware, there are various daytime and evening activities out there for boys in which to participate and with this in mind, I would like to thank all of our parents and families for the commitment and dedication they show in bringing their son/s to the 231st Boys’ Brigade’s various activities and events throughout the session. As we all know this year was an important year for Stamperland Church as we called a new minister to the Church, the Rev Scott Blythe, who was our Chairman for our Display and we were delighted to welcome him to his first Junior Section and Sparks Display. We look forward to many years working together with him to advance the work of the BB in Stamperland. This year the Junior Section boys have taken part in Battalion Athletics at the Emirates Arena, gained third place at the Junior Section Figure Marching Competition and also took part in the Junior Section Bible Quiz competition.Special congratulations go to Lucas Wilkinson who won two gold and one silver medal at the athletics and to Max Allan who won first place in the P5 Bible Knowledge Quiz.Last Session we restarted Saturday morning games as well as Wednesday Night football training. This year we have built on the success of these events and numbers at both football training and Saturday morning games have grown with more boys taking part and enjoying themselves. Thank you to Raymond Russell, my dad, and Boys Brigade elder, who has come along

pantomime and our Christmas Party. We also enjoyed our trip to Millport with all the boys enjoying visiting the toy shop, cycling round the Island, playing football and visiting the sweetie shop. Our BB display was held on Friday 4th May with Mr Jim French from the 205th BB as our Inspecting officer. For those who were in attendance I hope you enjoyed seeing our boys show you a little of what they do on a Friday night. For those reading this magazine and not present at the Display, the boys took part in marching routines, sang songs, played games, demonstrated their gymnastic skills and had a really good time.A major part of the Display is the prize giving part of the evening, and I would like to congratulate all of the following prize winner who were as follows:Most Improved Sparks Footballer -Best Sparks Footballer -Most Improved Junior Section Footballer-Best Junior Section Footballer -Best Sparks Attendance and Uniform -Best Junior Section Attendance and UniformBest Group -Best Drilled Spark -Best Drilled JuniorChristian Faith award -Best All Round Spark -Best All Round Junior -

As Officer in Charge I really enjoy working with the boys and their parents. I could not run our section myself and I would like to give my sincere thanks to the staff who come each week and give up their own free time for the boys. I hope you enjoy your summer break and look forward to reading about what the Boys Brigade is doing next session when we start again on the 1st Friday in September.

Beaver Colony

Beavers finished the session before Easter by going to Air Space in East Kilbride where they had a party. As well as trampolining, they also played a number of games including football, dodgy ball, volleyball and basketball. The evening was then finished off with juice and snacks. A good night was had by all.

The Beavers have also been working on gaining badges, with both the Sports badge and Craft Camp badge being achieved in the session before Easter.

Please note Beavers finish on the 14 June for the summer, starting back on 6 September.

Alison Macfarlane - Asst. Beaver Leader, Tel: 0141 644 2712

Sleepover - Our sleepover event at Loch Lomond Sea Life Centre has been rearranged for June (after being cancelled by the snow in March) and this will be a great way to round off the session.

Badges - Cubs have been working towards a number of badges over the last couple of months. We have been looking at some basic first aid, how to keep your home safe, how to be safe in a car and crossing the road as well as working within teams.

Over the past few weeks we have awarded over 75 badges across the pack which is a great achievement.

Our older Cubs are also working hard towards their Silver Chief Scouts Challenge badge which should be completed just before, or shortly after the summer break, as long as they complete their personal and other challenges.

Hello & Goodbye - Cubs are in the process of welcoming up a number of Beavers who are progressing to Cubs, while at the same time saying goodbye to a number of Cubs progressing up to Scouts.

Therefore it will be “Hello” to Jacinto, Joseph P, Gabriel, Joseph H, Zayan, Matthew, Evan and Callum and “Goodbye” to Ethan, Callum, Rafa, Finn, Saul, Daniel, Raymond, Jamie and James. More details to follow after the summer break.

Welcome Conor and we hope you enjoy your time in Cubs.

Auchengillan Weekend - After the summer the Cubs will be straight into planning for our weekend away to Auchengillan at the start of October. As ever we will be combining a mix of scouting skills, fun & games, a campfire and of course some of the adventurous activities offered by the staff at Auchengillan.

On behalf of the Cub leadership team I hope that you have a relaxing summer break and manage to get a bit of warmth and sunshine!

Parents Committee - As the Group grows in numbers it was decided to try and set up a parents committee to assist the Leaders in organising fund raising and, when required, for a parent’s night or other special occasions. I would like to thank the parents and leaders that attended for the first meeting and set out dates and events for the coming year. More details to follow after the summer break.

Explorers Activity Day - As mentioned in the previous Focus the Explorer Leaders Sam, Greig and John had arranged an activity day at Auchengillan just for the Explorers. This started with climbing in the morning, followed by lunch with a Bar B Q and Laser Tag in the afternoon. This turned out to be good a team building exercise and a very enjoyable day for the eight explorers and four leaders.

Troop Nights - Each week the Leaders are running a very active, balanced programme for the eighteen Scouts on a Thursday night. The Scouts are completing the fitness challenge and learning basic Scouting skills. As mentioned in the Cub article we will have another nine Cubs moving up to the Scouts between now and the end of May.

Tag Active - The Scouts will be taking part in a night of physical activities at Tag Active in East Kilbride as part of the ongoing fitness challenge in the middle of May.

Potential Fund Raising - Planning is being put in place for the Group to have a Coffee Evening as a fund raiser for the various Sections. Leaders, parents and members of the congregation are all welcome. Details to follow.

Explorers - As we go through 2018 the Explorers look to be on the increase with the assistance of Sam Wilson, Greig Keir and John Bradley (all former Scouts) who are willing to undertake the appropriate training and hopefully run the unit with a monthly programme. The Leaders have arranged a programme

of activities for the Explorers in the coming month’s dependant on exams and other commitments.

Spring Fair - The Scouts will be taking part in the yearly church fete cooking burgers and sausages as part of the fundraising for Stamperland Church. We look forward to seeing you there.

Can I wish you all a pleasant summer break on behalf of all the 79th Group’s leaders?

Proposed dates for the 2018/19 session are Sunday 9th September / 18th November / 20th January / 3rd March. SAVE THESE DATES NOW!

Three guys are fishing when an angel appears.

The first guy says, “I’ve suffered from back pain for years. Can you help me?” The angel touches the man’s back, and he feels instant relief.

The second guy points to js£jis thick glasses and begs for a cure for his poor eyesight. When the angel tosses the lenses into the lake, the man gains 20/20 vision.

As the angel turns to the third fellow, he instantly recoils and screams, “Don’t touch me! I’m on disability!”

N e w Sunday M orning S erv ice T im e.

When Tom Nelson retires at the end of July our church will link with Netherlee and Scott Blythe will become minister of the linked charge. For the majority of people the most noticeable effect of the linking will be that from Sunday 5th August our morning service will start at 11.30 am and the service at Netherlee Church will start at 10.00 am. The changes in service time are to allow Scott to lead worship in both churches. Services will probably be a little shorter than is the case at the moment. At Stamperland we can expect the service to finish around 12.15 - not much later than at present.

There will be some differences; morning tea and coffee will be available from just before eleven o’clock rather than after the service; the offering is likely to be uplifted during the singing of a hymn; the intimations will be announced at 11.25 before the service starts.

We hope that both congregations understand the need for the change and will manage to adapt. If you find 11.30 is rather too late, please feel free to attend the 10.00 service at Netherlee rather than stopping going to church at all. The service times will be reviewed in January. So speak to your elder or the minister or myself if you have a strong view regarding the change of worship time or the accompanying changes.

M agazin e A rtic le s , Sunday In tim atio n s and D ead lines

Although I am a regular contributor to Focus magazine I can still find it difficult to meet the deadlines for publication. Sometimes I just can’t think what to say; other times I know what I’d like to write about but I can’t be certain that, by the time of publication, what I was planning to say would still be relevant. Meeting deadlines can be challenging. It is all too tempting to procrastinate. It is easy to think there is plenty of time. But there are good reasons for the editor’s deadlines for Focus articles. It takes time to arrange the magazine and the layout of articles. You have probably all noticed that the total number of pages in Focus is always a multiple of four. If one or two regular contributors don’t send in their article, then the editor needs to undertake a major rearrangement of existing articles and pages or find additional material to fill “blank spaces”. And, of course, once the magazine is compiled it takes time to print, collate and publish the magazine. The same goes for the intimations in the Order of Service.

So, for those of you who seek to communicate via Focus and the Order of Service, please think well ahead to meet the publication deadlines.

Open Door

You will be aware that Stamperland Church sanctuary is open on a Wednesday morning from 10.00 o’clock until 12.00 o’clock for quiet contemplation and personal prayer. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available in the vestibule where fellowship can be enjoyed. It would be encouraging if more of our members were able to come along.

As you will know we are trying to work more closely with Netherlee Church. They also have an Open Door on a Wednesday morning. They have a short Service at 10.00am for approximately 30 minutes. They also have tea, coffee and fellowship after the Service. If anyone from Stamperland Church would like to attend they would be made welcome. This may be of interest to you if you feel you are unable to attend Sunday morning worship at Stamperland. If you require transport to Netherlee their minibus can collect you. Please contact either, Evelyn Graham or Nancy Fisher Tel. 638 3844.
