Lent and Our Wilderness March 5, Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of Lent. In the tradition of the church, the season of Lent is observed during the 40 days, not including the Sundays, before Easter. It is a time for the church to remember how Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness fasting and being tested before beginning his public ministry. (Matthew 4:1-2) Each year we, who follow Jesus, are invited to use this time to pray, to examine our lives, to confess, and to seek God’s grace and healing. There is something of a wilderness in our existence most of the time. We don’t need ‘’to go to the wilderness’; we experience it daily in our own broken promises and the sin-filled world. All of us have wilderness, desert places in our lives-dried up, dusty, hard-cracked earth areas which we would just as soon hide from ourselves and from God. Instead, this season invites us to reflect, to pray about, and to explore this inner geography. The time of Lent is an opening which allows us to face our wildernesses and to seek God’s grace just as Jesus did in his time. As I write this, thinking of wilderness places, God leads my thoughts another direction. I recall the story after story the youth have told us in worship lately about how Christian camps and mission trips have connected them to God and changed their lives. I also remember last Sunday’s Time with Young Worshippers when a multihued group of children came forward. They come to the center of our place of worship with so much energy and joy to hear God’s story in the midst of their com- munity of faith. In the face of my reflections on wilderness, I am confronted with God’s creative work bringing forth and sustaining new life, youthful faith, and joyous celebration. The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom, They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. (Isaiah 35) So it is that we have the courage to face our wilderness places in this time of Lent. We can do so because we do not face them alone. Jesus, who prayed, was tested, and persevered, is with us, even now. God is still in charge. By the Holy Spirit, we may hold on to the promise that the wilderness will give way to gladness and there will be new life and rejoicing. Lent and Our Wilderness

March 5, Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of Lent.

They come to the center of our place of worship with so much energy and joy to hear God’s story in the midst of their com-munity of faith.

(Isaiah 35)

So it is that we have the courage to face our wilderness places in this time of Lent. We can do so because we do not face them alone. Jesus, who prayed, was tested, and persevered, is with us, even now. God is still in charge. By the Holy Spirit, we may hold on to the promise that the wilderness will give way to gladness and there will be new life and rejoicing.

Please be in prayer for these congregation members and friends...

Notes of appreciation received since the last Focus:

Liz Travis wrote: Thank you for all the cards and notes I received upon my

retirement. They certainly warmed my heart and let me know of the special friendships we have together. I want to thank the congregation for the lovely vase I received on Jan.12. It was inscribed with the words, "Presented to Liz Travis With Much Gratitude For Her Years of Service At Holland FUMC" with the date on the other side. The flowers were beautiful and I will cherish the vase in the years to come and remember all my friends at FUMC. I also thank you for your gener-osity in giving gifts to my special causes. Being a Kids Hope mentor, I wanted to support that mission, and the Stephen Ministry area, and P.E.T. Every time I watch the P.E.T. video and see kids crawling on the dirt I am so thankful for the life my children and

grandchildren are able to live. I can't thank you enough for the care you have shown me.

Millie Shidler wrote: Giving thanks to the Women’s Auxiliary (UMW) for the bell, which is so unusual. To Sharon Rocker, for her visits; to Linda and Larry for their visit and encouragement; for all the prayers from the church; for the pretty poinsettia and to all those who called with wishes for my recovery. A bit of good news from the doctor this week-the ankle wound is really doing good and the wound is now much smaller. So prayers do work and are very much appreciated. Thank you to all!

Joyce Buis wrote: Many thanks for the white poinset-tia given to me while I was at the Inn of Freedom Vil-lage. I also enjoyed the visits from Sharon Rocker and the many cards I received. It is nice to know that you are missed.

Spark Rotation will take a short pause from its year long People of the Bible theme in March to participate in the church wide study The Way. Starting on March 9, we will walk with Jesus as he takes his last journeys on earth. The first week of March (Mar. 2) will be another intergenerational event in Fellowship Hall. See page 8 for more information about that morn-ing. We are always looking for new helpers and teach-ers for this class. A one week a month commitment is all we ask. Sign up for your preferred day at the first floor hallway table and thanks!

Small Groups

Nurture Ministries would like this to be the year that everyone at FUMCH tries a Small Group, a class, or both. Look for program-ming, Small Group studies, classes, and presentations that will give you the opportunity to engage with your Bible and your God in a new and deeper way.

Small Group is a commitment that will bring you closer to God, grow your understanding of various Christian topics and the Christian faith itself, and bring you into deeper fellowship with some other Christians who are seeking the same thing. Studying together, supporting each other, and holding each other accountable is some of what Small Groups is about. Mostly, it is building connection. If you haven’t tried a Small Group yet, talk with one of the leaders, a member, or Heidi and find out more.

Here is a list of FUMCH’s current Small Groups:

BREAD PAN OFFERING for MARCH

On March 16, our Bread Pan Offering will be for the One Great Hour of Sharing and will help heal broken lives for the survivors of disas-ters. JFON Celebrates 10th Anniversary in West Michigan Justice for Our Neighbors-West Michigan celebrated the 10th anniversary of its founding in Grand Rapids on Friday, February 7, with a fundraising dinner, silent auction, remarks by Bishop Deborah Kiesey and District Superintendent Bill Haggard, and testimony by a JFON client who immigrated from Kenya. (Holland’s JFON began operating one year later; the Grand Rapids and Holland clinics share an attor-ney.) More than $8,000 was raised at the dinner, with contribu-tions from Bethany Christian Services, area law firms, FUMC of Holland, UMW of Holland, the Grand Rapids District-UMC, and individuals. (The FUMC Holland Bread Pan offering on February 16 was for JFON.) JFON is a United Methodist immigration ministry operating through paid attorneys and many volunteers at more than 40

clinics across the country, offering free legal advice to low-income immigrants on issues of family reunification, refu-gees and asylum petitions, domestic violence against women immigrants, and special humanitarian concerns. JFON also helps people prepare their papers to become U.S. citizens. In the 10 years since JFON began in Grand Rapids and Holland, more than 1,900 clients from 60 countries have been assisted. In the event program, Rev. Laurie Haller wrote: “JFON-West Michigan is unique in that it may be the only JFON in the country that was initiated and funded by a local church, not by a district or confer-ence...Insisting that God calls us to welcome the stranger in our midst, JFON exemplifies the gospel mandate to reach out to all people with com-passion, mercy, advocacy, and justice.”

General fund expenses through the 3rd week of February were $79,000 with contributions totaling $92,900. Our positive cash position is the result of two main factors: A $2600 healthier insurance rebate from the government and the pre-payment by several members of their annual pledge.

Our 10th St. house obligation will be completed by April of this year.

Our Capital Reserve balance is approximately $80,000. We have some large repairs that need to be completed this year that will place heavy demands on this fund.

All invoices are paid to date.

Our Church is again sponsoring a volunteer work trip to Lake Louise Camp scheduled for April 27th through May 1st, Sunday thru Thursday noon. All interested parties, regardless of gender, age, work skills, and talents are welcome at Lake Louise. Holland First United Method-ist Church has been helping at Lake Louise for many years; the Spring trip helps to prepare for the camping season and the Fall trip helps to close the camp for winter. Part of this Spring trip will help to finish the "Carr Cabin" that was started last fall. Our own Matt and Elizabeth Carr helped to fund the new cabin that is a part of the on going improvements and building plans at Lake Louise. Matt, Elizabeth, Pastor Lynn, and many campers from our church have

participated in summer activities at Lake Louise. We encourage and invite all interested parties to join us at Lake Louise this spring. Contact Gene Wong at 399 3431 or Myke Sherman, Ground Directors 231 549 2728 for more information.

The winter just goes on and on, but the youth are keeping warm with all of their activities. This month we will be starting off with Youth Sunday on March 2 and then serving dinner to everyone after church on March 16. We are SO GRATEFUL for the generosity of the church and how well $10-for-10 is going this year. As of this writing, we have surpassed our $10,000 goal with about $2800 in “over and above” giving. We are hoping that our final amount will allow about $3000 extra this year to assist families who have multiple youth going to church camp and on a mission trip. The campaign ends on March 16 with a dinner after church by the youth. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Sunday, March 2 Youth Sunday! All youth needed to help with ushering, greeting, serving communion or be-ing a part of the music or speaking. We will be doing both services, so please arrive early!
