Lucky Winners!
Jay Patel (Store #33916 in Cary) sold a $1 million winning Millionaire Raffle ticket and earned a $10,000 bonus for his store. Jay and his wife Dimpal live in Woodstock and own two 7-Eleven stores. “Lottery sales in my store have increased ever since people found out that I sold one of the big winning tickets,” he says. “When the jackpots are high, we see a lot of new customers,” he adds. “Selling lottery tickets definitely helps me sell other products. Once they are in the store, they usually make additional purchases.”
Kamran Zaidi (Store #33819 in North Riverside) earned a $10,000 bonus for selling a winning Mega Millions ticket at the end of last year. “I’ve had this store for over five years and have been selling lottery tickets the entire time,” says Kamran. “We have many regular customers, daily lottery customers, who come in for their tickets and always buy other things,” he adds. “I have four kids,” he continues. “With the bonus money, I plan to take my family on a vacation!”
Nancy Kawahara (Store#33858 in Schiller Park) received $10,000 for selling a $1 million winning Powerball ticket in January. When asked how she keeps her Lottery sales up, she said that she makes sure her staff is informed about lottery products. She keeps her clerk tip cards at the cash register facing the clerks at all
times. She also makes sure staff members remind customers of the current jackpot amounts. “Especially when the jackpots are climbing higher, we tell our customers to get a ticket to beat the rush and the lines,” she said. “The winner and his family come into our store all the time. He’s from Schiller Park, so it was great to have one of our regular customers, someone in our community, win a big lottery prize.”
Ambalal Patel (Store #13369 in Chicago) has been selling lottery tickets for 8 years, and was thrilled when he sold a $1 million winning Quick Pick ticket for the Powerball drawing in March. “I know the winners and they are regu-lar customers,” he said. “I was so happy for them,” he adds. “I kept telling all of my customers that we sold a big one!”
7-Eleven franchisees continue to win big through the sale of Illinois lottery tickets. The FOAC would like to congratulate these lucky winners, who were presented with bonus checks at their stores. Keep selling those lottery tickets...it could be you!
Attendance Among the Highest as Franchisees Voice Their Concerns
Franchisees turned out in record numbers at last month’s FOAC General Meeting, which took place on Thursday, April 4th at the Waterford Banquets in Elmhurst. In addi-tion to vendor presentations by Hershey’s, Inventure Foods, Monster Energy, and Nestlé Waters, franchisees were invited to voice their concerns about the challenges they face on a daily basis.
“Many of our franchisees seem to be fighting an uphill battle day in and day out,” said Hashim Syed, FOAC board member. “They are struggling, and it’s sad that they aren’t getting the support they need from SEI management,” he adds. “The FOAC board of directors is doing everything we can to address and respond to their issues, but it’s nearly impossible with-out the involvement or assistance of upper management. We’re in a very difficult situation.”
While franchisees shared stories and found support in one another, there was an obvi-ous sense of disappointment that no one from SEI management was in attendance to respond, despite numerous invitations by FOAC board members and franchisees. “It’s very difficult to make any progress without communication,” says Hashim. “We are hopeful that things will change moving forward and that SEI management will be willing to work with us to make things better for all.”
Specific details of what took place during the General Meeting will be featured in the June issue of this newsletter. The FOAC board encourages franchisees to attend all future board meetings and the two remaining general meetings of the year. “There is strength in numbers,” says Hashim. “We will be heard.”

2012 Retailer Initiative Award
Winner
In addition to receiving the 2012 Retailer Initiative Award, Nick’s store was chosen to be re-set as part of the 7EE (7-Eleven Experience). To the right are answers to questions that many franchisees have asked. Thank you Nick for taking the time to respond to them and for sharing your experiences. Congratulations to you and your team!
Congratulations to Nick and his team!
How long have you been a 7-Eleven franchisee?I have been a franchisee for a year and half now. I took over my store in September of 2011.
How many stores do you own and where are they located?I own one store, which is located at 5953 W. 63rd Street in Chicago.
How and why was your store chosen for the 7EE (7-Eleven Experience)?I’m a big believer of using retailer initiative. Even prior to 7EE, I made sure each and every section in my store was fronted, faced, and in stock. In addition, my staff and I provided excellent guest service, constantly scored high on GEA, kept good community relations, and worked hard on growing sales.
Were you surprised when you found out your store was chosen?Yes and No. I was surprised because I was honored to have been chosen in the short tenure I’ve had with 7-Eleven. On the other hand, I wasn’t surprised because of the excellent condition and execution of my store.
What is the process for re-setting the store and how long did it take? Re-setting the entire store is a lengthy process. We had to pull the new schematics, delete SKUs that weren’t in the schematics, add new SKUs, and re-organize all the shelving. The entire process took about 3 weeks.
What exactly took place during the re-set?Products that weren’t part of the schematics were pulled from the shelves, and new products were added. Also, there was rearrangement of the SKUs.
Did you agree with all of the changes that were made? No, I didn’t. I had a lot of my top sellers from the vault and center of store that were non-carried or pulled from shelves. This happened because they had to bring in the new items, and there was no space for those particular top sellers.
Do you think that the changes were beneficial? Some of the changes were beneficial. New vault items picked up sales quickly. However, there were also a lot of items that were new and became dead items within 4 weeks.
Did your customers notice the changes that were made and has it been positive?Absolutely. 90% of our guests are regulars, and they quickly picked up on the changes. Thankfully, they were all happy with the changes and the new layout of the store.
Did you have any say in the changes that took place?Yes. My team and I were involved in every process of the 7EE. It was a lot of hard work for those 3 weeks, but in the end, it has been a great learning experience.
Who was there to help with the process? There was a whole team of people that worked hard for this 7EE. It mainly consisted of field consultants and corporate store managers. However, my market manager Al Valente, previous field consultant Ripon Bhuiya, and current field consultant Chris Jones, did a fantastic job of organizing this event.
Who oversaw the process to make sure all went smoothly? My staff, Field Consultant, and I were continuously involved with this process to make sure everything went according to plan.
Were franchisees invited to see your store when it was completed?Yes, and I really thank them for coming out and showing their great support. I hope there was something every franchisee was able to learn and apply to their store from 7EE. I know I learned a lot from the franchisees that visited that day.
Do you believe that the changes will help you be more successful/profitable?Of course. In this business, I have to make sure that I keep up with the trends and demands of my guests. In order to grow, I need to constantly manage my inventory, and make sure dead items are deleted, and new items are being added.
What keeps you motivated, upbeat, and positive each day?I am a keen believer of making my own success. I am a very competitive person, even with myself. I need to see myself grow as an individual and as a businessman. Of course, there is my family and friends that support me and keep me motivated as well.

FOAC Supports Snow City Arts Gallery New Wing of Hospital Named in its HonorFor many years, the FOAC has proudly supported Children’s Memorial Hospital now called the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. In apprecia-tion for the FOAC’s fundraising efforts and generous donations, the hospital wing, which houses the brand new Snow City Arts Gallery, has been named in its honor.
The Snow City Arts turns time in the hospital from “time to heal” into a “time to learn”, providing young patients with professional artist volunteers that help them cultivate their creative writing, mu-sic, painting, photography, and film-making skills. The Snow City Arts Gallery on the 12th floor of Lurie Children’s features artwork created through the program by young patients (as shown in the ac-companying photo where a patient displays her artwork, along with artists who assisted her).
“We are very proud of our affiliation with Lu-rie Children’s Hospital and we are especially grateful that they chose to name a wing in honor of the FOAC,” said Joe Rossi, FOAC president. “We’re so pleased to see the beautiful results of our fundraising efforts.”

After introducing several new sal-ads, snacks and mini-versions of consumer favorites, 7-Eleven has turned its attention to heartier fare with the addition of two new pre-mium sandwiches – the Steakhouse Roast Beef and the Bistro Deluxe. The introduction continues 7-Eleven’s march toward a more fresh-foods-focused product mix to compete not only with other food retailers but also with quick-serve restaurants. The two new flavorful sandwiches feature prime deli meats, fresh pro-duce, specially blended spreads and premium breads.
“Eating on the go or buying food to eat later are trends that are here to stay, but people are less willing to give up quality for convenience, nor should they,” said Kelly Buckley, 7-Eleven vice president of fresh food innovation. “At 7-Eleven, we have broadened our menu appeal for customers who want a premium, deli shop-quality sandwich,” she adds. “The Steakhouse Roast Beef and Bistro Deluxe sand-wiches follow current food trends for top-quality ingredients with an unexpected flavor twist.”
Besides the new sandwiches, salads and snacks in the deli case, consumers might notice fresh, new graphics that feature a contemporary, dot-grid pattern in shades of lime green on sturdy, clear plastic packaging. The new sandwich graphics are the first step toward a storewide overhaul of packaging to call attention to the quality of 7-Eleven’s prepared foods and beverages.
“The packaging serves as the stage for the food and needs to convey freshness, quality and the 7-Eleven brand image,” Buckley said. “It also needs to make the food easy to eat on the go. We have added a packaging engineer to our staff who worked closely with our marketing agency and a graphic designer to create the new look.”
“Ours is a holistic fresh-food plan, with the primary goal of building an all-day menu of delicious foods that gives hungry customers what they want morning, noon and night,” Buckley added. “That’s what differentiates 7-Eleven from most prepared-food providers. At 7-Eleven, you can get a slice of pizza for breakfast or a breakfast sandwich in the middle of the
night and, of course, one of our new sandwiches at any time they wish!”
A Steakhouse Roast Beef sandwich on marble rye bread is part of 7-Eleven’s new premium sandwich lineup that includes a Bistro Deluxe sandwich with Black Forest ham, Genoa salami and Swiss cheese on Asiago bread.
The FOAC Trade Show Committee would like to thank our vendors
and our franchisees for making this year’s annual trade show the best one yet! We are grateful for your
support and the commitment you have shown to the FOAC.
