« New York Post, Saturday, March 5, 2016 nypost.com 28 Mets’ middle a dynamic duo By MIKE PUMA PORT ST. LUCIE — The Mets’ new double-play com- bination was unveiled Fri- day, and appeared in sync. Neil Walker fielded Christian Yelich’s grounder in the first in- ning and fed Asdrubal Ca- brera to start the 4-6-3 double play — the first of many the Mets expect the duo to turn this season. “Game situations are more important than any- thing for middle infield- ers,” Walker said after the Mets and Marlins played to a 4-4 tie over nine in- nings. “Simple things like peeking over to see where [Cabrera] may be and the hitters’ counts and the two-strike counts, those are things you can’t learn over in the back fields.” Cabrera said a comfort level is developing between him and Walker, who have discussed where they like to receive their throws. “We have already talked about it and he’s a great second baseman,” Cabrera said. “He knows what he has to do, so I’m excited.” Walker said the new rules eliminating the “neighbor- hood” play at second base will take some adjustments for both him and Cabrera. “We can’t be moving too much across the bag with our throws or with our un- derhand feeds,” Walker said. “But for the most part it’s the work on the back fields with the throws and the communication.” Bartolo Colon and Steven Matz are both scheduled to pitch Monday in split-squad games as the Mets begin using their starting pitchers. Colon is scheduled to face the Ti- gers at Tradition Field, with Matz pitching against the Cardinals in Jupiter, Fla. Jim Henderson fired a scoreless inning in relief with two strikeouts. The former Brewers closer is attempting to make the team in his comeback from shoulder problems. METS NOTES SPORTS SHORTS NFL: Giants tender 7 of 8 FAs The Giants tendered one-year minimum contracts to seven of their eight exclusive- rights free agents Friday, highlighted by running back Orleans Darkwa. Also tendered were Big Blue’s only healthy tight ends — Will Tye and Jerome Cunningham — along with punter Brad Wing, safety Bennett Jackson, wide re- ceiver Myles White and offensive lineman Adam Gettis. The only exclusive-rights free agent not tendered by the Giants was oft-injured wide receiver Marcus Harris, who now is an unrestricted free agent. — Bart Hubbuch l Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs was arrested Friday on a suspended driver’s license after investigators said his car hit a curb and he told them he may have been asleep. l Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will have surgery on his collarbone next week, according to multiple reports. Romo missed 12 total weeks last season after breaking his collarbone on two separate occasions. l The Colts will release wide receiver Andre Johnson after just one season, ac- cording to multiple reports. A 13-year vet- eran who spent his first 12 seasons with the Texans, Johnson caught just 41 passes for 503 yards and four touchdowns last year, all career lows. ETC: Yale nears Ivy League title Brandon Sherrod scored 18 and was one of six Yale players to reach double dig- its in an 88-64 victory over Cornell on Fri- day in Ithaca. Meanwhile, in Cambridge, Mass., Har- vard held off Princeton 73-71, crimping Princeton’s hopes for a share of the Ivy League title. Yale now needs just a win or a Princeton loss to clinch the league. l Kris Bryant got a raise from the ma- jor league minimum to $652,000 after win- ning the NL Rookie of the Year award by a unanimous vote. The third baseman earned $474,221 last year, when he made his big-league debut April 17 and hit .275 with 26 homers and 99 RBIs. l The Rockets signed free agent for- ward Michael Beasley. Beasley, the sec- ond overall pick in the 2008 draft, spent this season in the Chinese Basketball As- sociation.
