  • FMU 2015 Mens Soccer Pre-Season OutlookThe Francis Marion University mens soccer team will open its 2015 campaign on Thursday evening (Sept. 3) with a roadmatch at Catawba College. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. A live video feed and live stats will be available onwww.fmupatriots.com .

FMU head coach John Campbell welcomes back 10 lettermen, including five starters, from last seasons 12-4-2 squad thatfinished third during the PBC regular season, was nationally ranked during the regular season, advanced to the semifinals ofthe PBC Tournament, and was ranked in the NCAA regional poll.

Each of the past three years, the Patriots have shown improvement in the win column: from four to five wins in 2012, then to10 victories in 2013, and to 12 in 2014.

Recently, FMU was picked to finish third in the annual Peach Belt Conference coaches pre-season poll the squadshighest pre-season ranking in seven seasons.

Catawba was 6-9-2 a year ago, including a 2-0 loss to Francis Marion. The Indians have been tabbed to finish 10th in theSouth Atlantic Conference according to that leagues pre-season poll. Francis Marion leads the all-time series 9-6-1 andhas outscored the Indians 29-25.

The Patriots return two-time All-Conference midfielder Sven Ricke and All-Conference defender Jeremy Bonyaa. Ricke ledFMU in scoring (19 points) and assists (9). He has also scored five goals, one of which was a match-winner, and took themajority of the teams corner kicks. Senior defender David Sheridan also returns for his fourth season. Last year, he talliedfour goals and one assist. He has appeared in 51 career matches and helped the Patriot defense improve from allowing 42goals in 2011 to just 21 last season. The other two returning starters are sophomore midfielder Thomas Kues and junior center back Peter Beniseau. The young 2015 Patriot edition also includes 15 newcomers. Of the squads 25 members, 20 will be in their first or secondyear of collegiate eligibility.

For us to be successful, we have to be organized on both sides of the ball, said Campbell. It will be equally importantthat we outwork our opponents every day.

FMU will be working with a freshman goalkeeper this season as newcomers Jonathan Mannes (Auckland, New Zealand)and Robert Schreiner (Clover, SC) are battling for the starting nod. Campbell noted that Wednesdays final practice woulddetermine the opening day starter. Its been a pretty even battle and the opportunity is still wide open for either one of themto take it. Both players are similar in many ways. They are both tall (Mannes 6-6 and Schreiner 6-2) and cover a lot of goal. They both are really good at making the first save, and are even in what their strengths are.

In addition to the two keepers, Campbell pointed to several other newcomers who might make an immediate impact for thePatriots. Along the back line, freshmen Caleb Jenkins (Columbia, SC) and Niklas Sundell (Enebyberg, Sweden) andsophomore Gaspard Mianne (Meudon, France) have had strong pre-season camps. All of these guys I see coming off thebench and giving time in the back.

In the midfield, he mentioned freshmen Donovan Hanzal (Aiken, SC), Sindre Traaseth (Lillehammer, Norway), and AntonJonsson (Karlshamn, Sweden) as newcomers fighting for possible starting berths. At the striker position, Campbell singled out sophomore Levin Sandmann (Heidelberg, Germany) as one who has done agood job in the pre-season and who could fight fora starting spot this season.

Following Thursdays opener, Francis Marion willplay host to local rival Coker College on Saturday(Sept. 5) at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field. The Patriots 17-match schedule for 2015 includeseight home matches. FMU is 13-4-0 at homeover the past two seasons. FMU has won two ofthree season-opening matches under Campbell.

The post-season PBC Tournament will begin withquarterfinals on campus sites on Nov. 3 and thefinal four will once again be played at BlanchardWoods Park in Evans, Ga., on Nov. 6 and 8.
