Fylingdales Moor is managed as aconservation area by the Hawk andOwl Trust on behalf of the StricklandEstate. It covers about 2,750 hectares(6,800 acres) of the eastern part ofthe North York Moors National Parknear Whitby.
This vast heather moorland, with itsscattered trees and wooded valleysand gullies, is being managed for itswildlife and archaeological remains.A key aim of the Trust's habitatmanagement is to encouragemerlins, harriers, short-eared owlsand other moorland birds, such asred grouse and curlew, to breed.
The moor is nationally andinternationally recognised as a Siteof Special Scientific Interest (SSSI),Special Protection Area (SPA) formerlin and golden plover, andSpecial Area of Conservation (SAC).
It is home to over 135 bird species, many mammals including otter andwater vole, plants ranging fromthree kinds of heather to bog myrtle, orchids and sedges, and insects likethe large heath and small pearl-bordered fritillary butterflies andemperor moth.
Through managing FylingdalesMoor for wildlife, the Hawk and OwlTrust is in a fantastic position to beable to carry out extensive habitatmanagement and researchalongside flood mitigation work toretain rainwater on the moor, storedin the peat layer, preventing somefrom running down stream andhelping to alleviate flooding in thelowlands beyond.
