    Salary Survey2013/2014

  • In late 2013 FMC Surveyed over 1000 architects across England, Scotland and Wales to produce the first ever architecture salary survey. The participants were divided into 6 main areas depending on their specific architecture experience;

    Architecture Management

    Enterprise Architecture

    Business Architecture

    Information Architecture

    Application Architecture

    Technology Architecture

The survey covered areas such as gender, geographical location, industry, motivations for leaving, whether the candidate was passive or active, ability to work from home and the total benefits offered including shares, car allowance and pension.

The results provide an insight in to architecture and a variety of information that generic salary surveys ignore.

    FMC Architecture Salary Survey

    Introduction

FMC CommentOne of the vagaries of architecture is that you can have two candidates with the same job title but in reality they are performing totally different roles. This obviously can lead to a small percentage of errors within the survey.

  • Salary increases over the past 12 months are very consistent across the various architecture Domains.

On average 31% of Architects received no increase with 39% receiving under 2%, so a whopping 70% of architects received at best a salary in line with inflation or lower.

The figure of 18% of Architects who received a pay increase of 5% or higher matched perfectly the 18% who had moved jobs in the last year.

The lowest band of increase was those who had received a pay rise of between 3%-5%. These are in line with those who had received the highest bonus proportion and are therefore can be considered the highest performing architects in the survey.

The vast majority of candidates who are happy in their current role state that they require a 10%-15% increase in the current cash element of their roles to move. However, only 2/3rds of candidates who moved in the last year managed to achieve this with only 1/3rds of Enterprise Architects hitting this target increase.

  • > 10% Pay Rise

The salary median for Central London based architects is between the 50% and 90% percentile and of course is higher than the regional averages. The lower end salary median figures are often those who work in the North West, North East, Midlands or Scotland. Those that are based in London work in the public or not for profit sectors Home based consultants are paid very well - often because of their specialists skills are in high demand by the consultancies that they work for. They are rarely found outside of a consulting company or IT vendor. Roles in the Southern Home Counties (Sussex, Kent and Surrey) pay significantly less than both London but also the M4 Corridor and Northern Home Counties. The dominant middle lies between 60,000 and 80,000, and that is at least 10,000 less than the Central London figures. The North West region has an exceptionally narrow distribution: almost all the respondents had a salary between 50,000 and 80,000.

FMC CommentAs line with what we have experienced this year, Business Architecture is in high demand and we have placed a number of Business Architects who have achieved >15% salary increase.

  • The motivations of an architect are vitally importantto understand. When you are you are dealing with a candidate market that is 80% - 90% passive you need to understand what motivates people. The most motivating factor for any architect when looking for a new role is career opportunity and increase in salary no surprises there! 25% of architects would move for a similar

package if they believed it was the right career opportunity though that is very subjective depending on the candidate.

The majority of home based architects would move in order to work a manager they could learn from.

84% of architects in permanent roles would describe themselves as passive and not looking to move, therefore they would need to be enticed away from their current position.

The higher you climb in the architecture hierarchy the more important that support from the CIO is in regards to motivations for moving. For a Chief Architect it is the most important motivating factor.

Candidates at the Solution and Design level of architecture are far more motivated by the opportunity learn more technical skills.

Interesting company reputation is twice as important for home based architects than it is for those who are in the office 5 days a week.

  • Although home based working has manyadvantages, the survey showed that there aredefinite disadvantages too.

More than 50% of those who like to would like have more ownership of a programme from an architecture perspective. This is the least important this factor is for those who work in the office 5 days a week. Lack of ownership is often a reason given by those in consulting who are looking to exit the industry and move to an end user company. Only 8% of architects have to be in the office 5 days a week. The highest level of anytime home based work, with more than 40% is East Anglia, Home Countries North, Scotland, North West, North East and the South West.

    Working from Home

Industry VariationsIt was not possible to list every industry in the survey as the results would be too diluted to be useable but FMC focused on the ones that are most common in their demand for architects.

  • Industry Sectors by Pay

Architects in Investment Banking earn 1.5 times the median base salary of those employed in the government sector.

Mobile Telecommunications have definitely lower median income, only 72,000. However, their dominant middle is between 65,000 and 96,000, meaning there are still a large number of architects earning well above the median figure.

  • Female architects earn on average 14.3% lessthan their male counter parts. This could be for awhole variety of reasons the most common onebeing that females due to family commitmentsare more likely to work 4 days a week or less. 54% of the female employees marked that theycan work from home anytime, in comparison only40% of male ones.

When recruiting ourselves, FMC has not noticed any major differences between the salaries offered for male and female candidates. However, 95% of our database is male so a female architect is rare to say the least!

  • Length of Time in Employment

The average amount that a company would put in an architects pension is 8%. The consulting industry is likely along with the defence sector and IT vendor to put in the lowest contribution to an architects fund.

    Pension, Bonus and Other Benefits

  • Which Jobs Have Vested Stock

Options Vested stock options have a measurable correlation with the base salary. The lowest paying jobs have a median pay out of 5,000, the middle 10,000, while the highest paying jobs have a median of 20,000. The effective upper bounds are 10,000, 18,000, 25,000 and 50,000, respectively.

The Lead Enterprise and Chief Architects have the highest and most reliable proportion of jobs with vested stock options: near 45% of the respondents had this incentive.

Less reliable, but still strong trend, that more or less 30% of TIA Solution Architects and Lead Solution Architects, Principal Architects and Lead Solution Architects have vested stock options.

Those who would like to have a role with a lower commute time receive, on average 5% less bonus.

Somewhat surprisingly only 50% of those surveyed received a car allowance.

FMC CommentIt has often been the case, that due to the complexityof current remuneration packages with certainclients, many architects do not know the true worthof their current package. It is often only revealedwhen candidates are close to being offered a newrole, frequently complicating the offer process.

At FMC we are finding an ever increasing demand for architects. The improvement in the economy and the realisation of the tangible business benefits that the architecture function can bring a business are becoming more known throughout industry. With the increased globalisation of companies and need to integrate new mobile technologies a clear architecture vision is essential in todays market.

As a result we are seeing a clear correlation of demand outstripping supply, particularly for permanent resources. This is seeing architecture salaries rise and candidates being given the opportunity to move for salary increase in excess of 10% for what they are receiving currently.

While most candidates would describe themselves as passive, there is only a handful that would say no to the right opportunity if it was presented to them.
