Art ‘n’ Facts June 2015 Volume 31, Issue 12 FLYING HIGH IS ALMOST HERE Flying High is just around the corner! On June 6th the Wilma Rudolph Event Center will be the site for this year’s annual fundraising gala. For the procrastinators, call us for ticket availability. We want to see you ex- ercising the auction paddle. Flying High is the museum’s main fundrais- ing event of the year. Much of what we produce depends upon the sup- port Flying High generates. All of our educational initiatives, programs, and exhibits begin with funds that are raised through this signature event. We are very grateful to our business and arts community who sponsor tables, donate great works of art, or services and goods for the silent and live auctions. The museum Guild is instrumental in the vision and exe- cution of Flying High. This year is no exception, as Flying High chair Jaime Durrett is planning a fabulous event harkening to the Arabian Nights theme. MEET THE STAFF I am happy to introduce Kali Mason to the Customs House Museum staff. Kali is our new Curator of Collections. She began her work with us on May 1st. Kali Mason earned her BA and MA degrees in History and Museum Studies from the University of Bridgeport and Marist College and the Lorenzo de’Medici Instituto Florence, Italy. Her experience has focused on collections care, where she previously worked in various museums in the Greater Boston, MA metro area. We are looking forward to her joining the team. Artists attending the Southern Watercolor Society’s workshop at the museum recently visited the home of former Customs House Museum Director Ned Crouch and his wife Jacqueline.

Pictured: artists Tuva Stephens, Lee Edge, Hilda Waide, Terri Jordan, Mary Spellings, Janet Felts, Judy Duke, Patsy Sharpe, Pat Patrick, and Kathleen Conover. Seated: Ned and Jacqueline Crouch.

“I'll stick my neck out and say that (the Southern Watercolor Society’s Juried Exhibition) is one of the finest watercolor shows I have EVER seen! It's better than most International shows. That space and the high quality of the art is knockout. GREAT JOB! I told Kathleen the same thing.”

Clarksville photographer Beverly Parker taught advanced darkroom and alternative photography processes at Austin Peay State University through the Community School of the Arts. This background in darkroom develop-ing and printing provided a bridge to experimenting with other photography processes. Beverly uses Polaroid film, no longer manufactured, to create the excitement of exposing the film, separating the negative from the posi-tive and transferring the image to watercolor paper. Her recent works create a layered sense of movement, leaving the viewer to imagine the sto-ry within each collaged composition.

Beverly is a co-founder of the Downtown Artists Co-op and has chaired the Riverfest Juried Art Exhibition for several years. Her award-winning pieces can be found in many corporate and private collections throughout the region.

EDUCATIONAL EVENTS & PROGRAMS

June First Thursday Art Walk June 4th 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Join us for the First Thursday Art Walk on June 4th. The museum will be open with free admission from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Author Sha-na Thornton will be signing copies of her new book Poke Sallet Queen and the Family Medi-cine Wheel. The book is available for purchase at Seasons: The Museum Store.

Story & Craft Time with Ms. Sue June 11th, 18th, & 25th 10:30 – 11:15 a.m. Join us as we learn about illustrators and their styles while listening to wonderful stories. Let’s Find June 10th, 17th, & 24th 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. This activity explores exhibits through specific topics and includes a story and a craft. Family Day – Happy Birthday! June 13th 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The museum is 32 years old this month. Join Ms. Sue in the Children’s Room at your leisure for some hands-on activities and “remember when” stories.

Children’s Room Theme: “Water, Water Everywhere” Open Daily 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. During the school year, one member-mom of-ten stopped by the museum with her children after school to spend an hour or so in the Chil-dren’s Room and in the Explorers’ Gallery. Get your membership’s worth: visit the museum often and enjoy these activities that change during the month. Children, Museums, and Art

I love looking at art with children; they often see things that I don’t. And instead of worrying about “the right answer” when asked about what they see, they are quick to point out ob-jects, or animals, or colors.

Children see art as something to be enjoyed, not studied, just as we also read books, watch plays, and listen to music solely for the pleas-ure and enjoyment they give us.

A painting, sculpture, or fabric wall-hanging can also serve as a medium for a discussion about topics related to history, science, litera-ture, social studies, and math. As Tennessee’s second largest general museum, we are one of the few places in the state that can provide this kind of integrated experience for you and your children.

All activities are free with your museum mem-bership or paid admission. All ages are wel-come! For more information, contact Ms. Sue at 931-648-5780 or [email protected]
