Introduction

Physics by Ritesh Agarwal (B. Tech. IIT Bombay)

Fluids are the substances that can flow. Therefore liquids and gases both are fluids.

Fluid Dynamics

Physics by Ritesh Agarwal (B. Tech. IIT Bombay)

When fluid flows w.r.t. container or vesselTypes of Fluid Flow1. Steady and Unsteady Flow : Steady flow is defined as that type of flow in which the fluidcharacteristics like velocity, pressure and density at a point do not change with time.

In an unsteady flow, the velocity, pressure and density at a point in the flow varies with time.

2. Streamline Flow : In steady flow all the particles passing through a given point follow the same pathand hence a unique line of flow. This line or path is called a streamline.Streamlines do not intersect each other.

3. Laminar and Turbulent Flow : Laminar flow is the flow in which the fluid particles move along well-defined streamlines which are straight and parallel. In laminar flow the velocities at different points inthe fluid may have different magnitudes, but there directions are parallel. Thus the particles move inlaminar or layers sliding smoothly over the adjacent layer.Turbulent flow is an irregular flow in which the particles can move in zig-zag way due to which highenergy losses take place.

Equation of Continuity

Physics by Ritesh Agarwal (B. Tech. IIT Bombay)

Based on law of conservation of mass.

In the steady flow the mass of fluid enteringinto a tube of flow in a particular time intervalis equal to the mass of fluid leaving out thetube.

Bernoulli’s Theorem

Physics by Ritesh Agarwal (B. Tech. IIT Bombay)

Based on law of conservation of energy.

The sum of pressure energy, kinetic energy andpotential energy per unit volume remains constantalong a streamline in an ideal fluid flow.
