The SSAT Framework for Exceptional Education (FfEE)Application for recognition of Transforming in Engagement with key stakeholders

To identify and structure your evidence and the narrative behind your journey you may wish to use the following headings

Engagement with other schools and educational organisations Parental and community engagement Student leadership Use of media and technology to engage stakeholders

We have submitted an application for the SSAT Framework looking at being ‘transforming’ in ‘Engagement with key stakeholders’. This is subject to peer and external review, but will provide a good assessment of where this aspect of our provision might be. This is just one method of getting accreditation and validation for much of the work that is done across all the teams. The SSAT are a strategic partner in the Canons Park TSA and Sue O’Grady from the P&P Team was part of the group that developed the framework and provides support for the process

EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE

Great Achievement – We will all be successful, attaining highly and progressing well, in order to fulfil our aspirations and empower ourselves. We will act confidently whilst showing responsibility and care for the achievement of others

‘To look at approaches using research and evidence to inform decision making and our understanding’

As part of the CPTSA Conference in February 2018, Nilam Patel presented on the research project underway in Maths, the outline from the programme is shown below;

Canons Park TSA Conference – Rebuilding Curriculum and Assessment – 3rd February 2018 at The Hive, Edgware

Nilam Patel & Colm Stack - Getting students to behave like mathematicians – Session 3

This workshop will describe an action research project being run to test the impact of a personalised maths mastery program on student attainment and impact on softer outcomes such as enjoyment, self-efficacy and resilience.

Nilam Patel is the KS3 Mathematics Curriculum Leader at Canons High School. She is also a Grassroots Leader and a Specialist Leader of Education. She has an MA in education. It was during the completion of her MA that her interest in mixed attainment maths teaching sparked. Her final year project comprised of an action research around motivation in students with low maths attainment. She has been working in Education since 2009 and has been exploring a variety of teaching methods (mastery, personalised learning, differentiating by outcome) to ensure the needs of all students in her classes are met. Her current action research project is looking at the effectiveness of a personalised learning.

Colm Stack is the Prefect and Yearbook coordinator at Canons High School. He is a young teacher with a budding interest in student development and how students learn most successfully. His interest in researched was peaked while researching the literacy demands of the new Mathematics curriculum in Ireland. Where the future of education lies is his current interest. He has been a member of the Personalised learning program this year and committed to appropriate challenge and pace all children.

‘To develop our networks and partnership, to add value for all our stakeholders’

The Inset Day on 21st February 2018, included 3 workshops delivered by one of our professional partners, Future First. The theme for the whole day was around tools for school improvement and Future First gave some ideas on how to use and engage our Alumni to make a difference to our current students including;

- How can alumni help students to access the curriculum

- Working with alumni as volunteers

- Targeted interventions with alumni

These workshops will be followed up by input into our professional learning cycle, with each workshop being delivered in more depth.

The Global Dimension

An example of the collaborative work done across teams at Canons and the way that it can link up partnerships, comes from the Embrace Conference, jointly organised between Canons Park Teaching School Alliance and Pearson, hosted at the Hive on 23 rd May 2018. The GLP project has been led by Christos Theodoulou, one of Canons System Leaders and shows the way in which our partnership approach informs both what we and others do giving both a local and national perspective. It also saw primary students inputting to the leadership and content of the sessions delivered.

For students and parents

The Karate club goes from strength to strength and held its first ever competition using Canons on Saturday 17 th February 2018, with a number of clubs and competitors invited, there was a full day of competition

We also have the Canons Cricket Academy back up and running through the summer, and from 26 th May we have also started a programme jointly with Middlesex CC offering cricket coaching to up to 40 youngsters for an 8 week programme.

Adding to the healthy theme, we have recently launched fitness sessions for students on a Friday after school. These are run for us by a current 6th form student, it is an offer we hope to develop for parents very shortly.

ESOL and Computing classes are continuing this term, with Maths classes to follow in September 2018.

The Canons Cricket Academy is also back up and running every Saturday, they are also running an initiative ‘All Stars Cricket’ in partnership with Middlesex Cricket Club designed to promote cricket to, this too is based at Canons on a Saturday morning from 12 weeks from mid-May. We are hopeful that we might see some funding to support this in the future.

PARENT PARTNERSHIP

Great Partnerships We will all participate in collaborative relationships that are mutually beneficial, enhancing our combined capacity and our collective reputation

Our work is ethical. We prioritise the equity and fairness that creates a caring community.

‘To develop our networks and partnership, to add value for all our stakeholders’

The partnership with CAB has continued successfully through this year and they have recently arranged a meeting with Adam Litchfield, as Director of Community Heartbeat, to discuss next year with us. CAB face significant financial challenges as their funding continues to decline, and as far as we are aware we are the only school in the country with this type of relationship. The sessions are completely confidential and as well as parents, staff have booked and used them.

The Canons Park Teaching School Alliance conference gave an opportunity for InvolvEd to talk about the joint development of the parentapp with Canons. This coincided with the rollout of the app to Year 8 parents.

12.30am to 1.15pm

Collaborative Talking Lunches – What does collaboration between schools, or between schools and other partners, look like? Find out over lunch and have your say too.

Partners include the National Association for Able Children in Education (NACE), the British Council, InvolvED parental engagement app, the Education Support Partnership, Glebe Primary School, The Misbourne School and Canons High School. Or, if you want to know more about the Canons Park TSA and how to get involved,

there’ll be an opportunity to do that too.The second workshop on ‘Screentime’ delivered by Dr Kathy Weston ran in mid-March. The uptake of parents was smaller than we hoped for, but the feedback was extremely positive. We are already planning the next workshop and looking at whether we can invite some parents from our primary partners, as we look to develop the workshop and increase the skills of our parents and others in the local community.

BARNET PARTNERSHIP

Great Learning We will all meet the challenges of self-improvement, seizing the opportunities to which we are entitled whilst also seeking personal enrichment. We will go beyond our own needs and engage with the learning of others.

Great Achievement – We will all be successful, attaining highly and progressing well, in order to fulfil our aspirations and empower ourselves. We will act confidently whilst showing responsibility and care for the achievement of others

‘To foster the development of knowledge from Barnet ‘surpluses’ around, coaching, teams, professionalism’

The Barnet partnership is successfully through its second full season, although the results on the pitch, have not been as positive as we might have hoped for. Recruitment is well underway for September 18 and for the first time this will include a similar programme for the London Bees who currently play in Women’s Championship.

Roy Syla hailed for on & off pitch achievements.

Barnet under 18’s midfielder Roy Syla was named in League Football Education’s ‘The 11’ for February. Roy has been called up to Albania’s U19 side as well as making regular appearances for the Barnet U18’s at The Hive, Edgware. The second-year apprentice has made significant strides in the classroom, too. He remains on course to achieve high grades in the BTEC Extended Diploma, as well as completing his NVQ and FA Coaching award. Speaking about Syla, his BTEC Tutor at Canons High Lucy Morcombe said “Roy is an

excellent, independent learner with a strong work ethic. He has progressed very well over the course of the season. He provides role model attributes that other players should look up to.” The 11’ acknowledges the football and academic progress of Under-18 players on apprenticeships at (EFL) League Clubs.

Canons and Oxford University

For the 2nd year running, we were proud to be invited to be part of the 2017/18 Varsity Matches, see the picture and excerpt from the day below

Last Sunday 11 of our Year 7 students were honoured to be mascots for the Teams as part of the exciting Cambridge v Oxford Varsity football match at The Hive. This is the oldest regular fixture in world football which, barring the two World Wars, has been played every year since 1873. History was made at The Hive last year when both the men’s and women’s matches were held on the same day for the first time. It was a very exciting afternoon and our Canons mascots were wonderfully professional doing an excellent job in leading out the Teams.

EnlightenmentOur Business Enrichment students found out how much there was to organise when our friends from Edgware Junior School visited us for a morning of product design, construction and marketing.

That might sound like a big order for year 5 pupils, but ask them to design a paper lantern, make and decorate it and then design a poster about it, and it makes more sense. The Edgware Junior pupils had a great time and as well as getting busy with the felt-tips and glitter, also got to see what their local high school is like. For our students, the need for careful planning and preparation for an event was experienced first-hand, whilst the delights of working with younger children were also discovered. Offered a 20 minute break away from their young visitors, our students all chose to stay with their new friends and continue with the great bonding and building day both sides were enjoying.

Research remains a key part of our approach as a school and as a Teaching School Alliance, and Katie Magee (System Leader at Canons) and Helene Galdin-O’shea (Director of Teaching School at Park High and member of C&P team) have been delivering training aimed at developing Research Advocates from across our primary partners. The sessions have been very well attended and they are now looking at the next steps for this developing network.

CANONS EXTENDED ASSURANCEGreat Partnerships We will all participate in collaborative relationships that are mutually beneficial, enhancing our combined capacity and our collective reputation

‘To look at approaches using research and evidence to inform decision making and our understanding’

‘To further develop a school review and improvement toolkit and promote its use’

‘To develop our networks and partnership, to add value for all our stakeholders’

We have continued to develop the Extended Assurance model completing internal and external projects, the excerpt below is from our partnership with the Misbourne, and a review of their MFL provision, which has been led by Tom Megit, another of Canons System Leaders

The Misbourne – MFL ‘Dream’ Workshop

Key Themes

Curriculum team. There were strong examples of collaborative working and the team identified their own strengths. Teacher interviews suggested that working together was a strength and mentioned team work. Student Leadership. The significant development of language leaders is a great strength and is already feeding into KS2. These leaders provide a wider model for whole school student leadership but also an opportunity to increase MFL visibility. Teaching and Learning. The learning walk and other evidence pointed to provision being at ‘embedding’ using SSAT ESF. High quality teaching informed by strong knowledge of languages pedagogy is key for strong pupil take up and achievement.

Page | 10

Page 11: fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.comfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/.../C-P-Tea…  · Web viewC & P Team Review – Part 2. Our vision for 2017/18. The Community

Ofsted’s 2015 report, ‘key stage 3 the wasted years’, found that, in just under half of languages lessons observed, teaching was not good enough and pupils were not being sufficiently engaged or challenged. Ofsted reported that this contributed in part to pupils choosing not to opt for the subject for GCSEMFL’s place in student’s future. There is some evidence to support Ofsted’s finding that factors other than a subject’s ‘usefulness’ or importance for future life or work influence pupil choice.. Beyond GCSE, the uptake of A Level French and German has seen marked historical decline. The decline in language studies at universities mirrors the picture at A’ level. Technology. The 5 year vision for the Misbourne has one of 4 key areas focussed on ‘putting e-learning and digital technology at the heart of the school for students and staff’. The use of technology featured strongly in feedback from staff and interactivity was flagged by students. Student attainment. The national picture shows the challenges for MFL with boys particularly underperforming nationally. The sustained student progress in French provides a model to build on

OUR COMMUNITY FOOTPRINT

Great Partnerships We will all participate in collaborative relationships that are mutually beneficial, enhancing our combined capacity and our collective reputation

Our work is ethical. We prioritise the equity and fairness that creates a caring community.

POLLING STATION As in previous years, Canons acted as a polling station for the Local Council elections, providing a venue for voting for 2 local wards on 3rd May 2018. The school operates as usual giving the community the opportunity to come into the school and see us in full operation on a normal school day (though the polling station is set up from 6am and operates to 10pm, taking advantage of the extended hours that Canons is open).

The other side of this is that students get to see democracy in action, to ask questions about what is going on and to question where they fit in. They weren’t quite as engaged with the local election, as they were for the Referendum, but it does pose positive questions for them and their place in the community.
