Material Benefits and Differences
CPX pumps are made from quality materials using advancedmanufacturing techniques, such as investment cast CD4MCuNimpellers and ductile iron bearing housings.
MaterialQuality

Minimum Tensile Strength N/mm2 (psi)
Pitting Resistance Number**(PREnr)
Grey Iron 180 HB 180 (25,000) < 1

316 Stainless Steel 185 HB 485 (70,000) 27
CD4MCuN 230 HB 690 (100,000) 35
Kolsterised stainless 1000 -1200 HV* Enhances base alloy Enhances base alloy
* above the HB scale** The modern NACE pitting resistance equivalent number (PREnr) is calculated from: PREnr = (%Cr) + 3.3 (%Mo + 0.5%W) + 16 (%N)
The higher the PREnr the better the material’s resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. And, a material’s resistance to abrasion andcavitation generally increases with both hardness and tensile strength. Consequently CD4MCuN impellers provide very good resistanceto erosive attack by solids. It should be borne in mind that low pump speeds are desirable when handling hard solids. Furthermore, thematerials of construction should be considerably harder than the solids being pumped.
CD4MCuN stainless steel has superior corrosion resistance to 316 stainless steel in many media. In addition, cast duplex stainless hasexceptional resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in chloride-containing solutions and is useful for both oxidising and reducing corrodents.Kolsterising is available on request for casings smaller than 560 mm x 485 mm (22 in x 19 in).

L v Non-L Cast GradesWrought grades for fabrications that are welded are low carbon (L)grades. Cast L grades have the additional advantage that cosmeticweld repairs may be made at wetted surfaces without the need forsubsequent heat treatment but are typically on longer delivery and
typically show marginally reduced strength.
CPX Benefit: High Grade Impeller and CasingMaterials ss StandardA duplex stainless steel (CD4MCuN) impeller is the normalbase standard, offering broadly better resistance against pitting, abrasion, cavitation, corrosion and erosion-corrosion comparedwith grey iron, ductile iron, carbon steel and 316 stainless steel.A competitive price and lead time 316 stainless steel or duplexstainless steel casing and cover are also available on request
CPX Benefit: Ductile Iron Material Frameas StandardPump frames have pressure loads transmitted to them from thepump rear cover. Safety is increased under this condition when thesuperior strength and ductility of ductile iron is employed by thepump manufacturer rather than grey iron.

Pumps
The Reflux Priming PrincipleThe CPXP self-priming pumpoperates on the reflux principle, using liquid recirculation toprime the pump. The pressure
differential between the aeratedliquid at the impeller and the
Advanced Technology45° Conical SealChamber with integralflow modifiers redirects
solids and slurry awayfrom seal and back intothe flow path of theprocess liquid, extendingseal life and improvingpump reliability.

non-aerated liquid in the priming chamber creates a vacuum thatpulls liquid up the pipe.
This principle eliminates the
need for both internal valves andexternal priming devices orfoot-valves. As a result, CPXP isideal for suction lift applicationsor where a process involvespumping a liquid with air orgas phases.

The rotor wet critical speed and 2nd critical speed are higher than the abovevalues. The above values equate, typically, to a safety margin of 3 over theoperating speed. The Solid shaft is generally a further 10% higher than thatfor the sleeved design.
In all cases the shaft power, or torque, should be checked at end of curve (EOC) ormotor power which ever is the higher of these two.
The above considers soft starting, Direct-on-line (DOL) or Star-Delta starting. Thelimit for starting assumes that the motor has a peak torque at start up which is nogreater than 300% of normal torque.
** 100-80-125 size is not available as a key drive impeller
*** 200-150-315 size is not available as a key drive impeller
Impeller Drive
The normal standard drive on the ISO 5199 CPX, is the screw driveimpeller. The benefits of this drive are twofold:
It reduces and simplifies the number of impeller joints to seal•It provides the most robust drive•
These features are particularly advantageous in chemical processapplications and chemical slurry service. They also are beneficialin applications in which the suction conditions and continuousservice are particularly demanding.
A feature in ISO 13709 (API610), specifically clause 5.6.3specifying a key drive impeller, compromises the requirements ofchemical and slurry pumping services but is sometimes the optiondemanded by a petrochemical focused contractor. A key driveimpeller is available as a frame mounted CPX option on most sizes. However, it may be appropriate to discuss a key drive impeller withthe contractor or user during enquiries so that they may clearlyunderstand the disadvantages of key drive type impeller where anapplication is a demanding chemical process or chemical slurrytype duty.

CPX Engineering Data
Erosive SolidsPresence of any erosive solids must be referred to Newark, UK Engineering
for approval. Providing the specific type of mechanical seal and flushing
and pipe work arrangements are carefully determined, hard particles up to
10% volume with diameter less than 1 mm (0.04 in) may be considered.
For hard solids, including 5-25% lime slurry, four pole speeds arepreferred. Furthermore, a dual mechanical seal with clean bufferfluid should be used. If possible, selections should be in the range80% to 110% of the best efficiency point.
For paper stock limits refer to the accompanying table entitiled“CPX and CPX-HP (High Pressure) Solids Capabilities and DirtyLiquids”. It is not necessary to modify the performance curvehead, flow or efficiency for these tabulated percentages.
Air
Entrained air is detrimental to head, capacity and efficiencyirrespective of viscosity or the presence of paper type stock. While the top discharge CPX pump casing is self venting, it will
experience severely reduced head, capacity and efficiency withmore than 1-2% air content. These performance parameters willthen be below that quoted such that the duty will not be met. Airor gas can particularly become trapped by the liquid if the suctionconditions provided are compromised. This is a particular issueto watch out for with viscous liquids or paper stock as the risknotably increases above 50 cP or 0.5% paper stock.
Viscosity Limit
Hydraulic Institute corrections to the pump water head, capacityand efficiency are utilized by Pros+ to determine the requiredperformance on liquids with a specific viscosity in the range1 to 1000 cP. (PROS will do selections to 500 cP, values abovethis please refer to Newark.) The starting torque characteristic
of the pump becomes more linear with viscosity and should becorrected for viscosity.
The minimum flow should also be either doubled above 500 cP orthe selection referred to Newark, UK Engineering to calculate thepermitted minimum flow due to the extra liquid heating expected.
Generally above 500 cP a positive displacement (PD) type pumpwill offer greater efficiency and may be more suitable. However, asuitable PD type may not be available either because it has limitedsealing options, is considered too complex or is restricted for theparticular liquid to be pumped.
