NGX/LGX SERIES GLASS VA FLOWMETER

ACCURATE MEASUREMENTFlow up the tapered tube lifts the float to an equilibrium position.Flow rate is then measured against the flat top edge of the float.
FLOWMETER CHOICEA complete VA flowmeter consists of a glass flow tube and floatscaled to the flow units required, and a frame to provide the endblock supports and to cover and protect the tube. The NGX Seriesframes use flow tubes with nominally 100mm long scales,whereas the smaller LGX frames use flow tubes with nominally30mm scales.
To choose a complete flowmeter select the frame code required,and separately specify the fluid flow range needed on the flowtube scale.
NGX and LGX Series frames are designed to fit your process. The options available allow easy installation, usuallysurface mounted on a vertical panel. Process connections and labelling can be customised to suit the application.

The Platon range of Glass Tube Flowmeters typically uses the 100mmscale length borosilicate glass tube and a float. Based on the well knownvariable area (VA) principle of flow measurement, these flowmetersprovide clear, simple and reliable operation.
Principle of Operation
Fluid flowing vertically upwards through the tapered glass tubecauses the float to rise to an equilibrium position. Flow rate ismeasured by reading the top edge of the float against the scaled tube(see diagram below).
Platon Glass Tubes from RM&C are individually scaled and calibratedaccording to customer’s requirements. Custom scales are producedusing our "Reynolds Curve" prediction software, which uses air orwater calibration data corrected for the effects of temperature andpressure on the density and viscosity of the working fluid.

Floscan Flow Alarms use an infra-red beam across theglass flowtube of a VA meter. GMT SERIES METAL TUBE VA FLOWMETER
Platon GMT Metal Tube Flowmeters are magneticallycoupled VA meters for liquids or gases. Fluid flowlifts the float assembly (with its encapsulatedmagnet) inside the tapered flow tube. The metersexternal pointer follows the magnetic field indicatingflow against a clear 150° scale, typically displaying a10:1 flow range.
High and low flow alarm versions are also available(see page 34). For full electronic transmission andtotalisation, utilising the vampire electronicmodule (see also page 34).
Its robust construction with noglands or seals makes the GMTideal for arduous service;particularly high pressureapplications or extremes oftemperature.

Principle of operationA permanent magnet encapsulated within thestainless steel float drives the externalmagnetically coupled pointer. Float movementis related to flow rate, and the indicator scale ismarked in the correct units of flow for theprocess conditions.
The standard unit requires no electrical power.As the measuring element is a sharp edgeddisc, the meter is relatively insensitive toviscosity changes in the fluid and to pipebends in the external pipework. How to Specify
VARIABLE ORIFICE/SWING VANE
Manufactured in a wide range of sizes and specification options but all having thesame basic function. A dial and mechanical indicator continuously monitor the flowrate, whilst electrical switches can be specified to signal when a particular level hasbeen reached during increasing or decreasing flows. Switches are field adjustableover the full range. Where batching, trending, totalisation or recording is required, allunits can be supplied with a 0-10V or 4-20mA output.

The flow switch body houses a spring loaded valve plate (vane) which pivots off-centre in a hemispherical cavity.Thus, the vane and cavity have a variable area orifice relationship. This gives both a high flow range and a linearrelationship between flow rate and vane displacement. The vane indirectly operates both the indicating needleand an adjustable cam, which in turn triggers the micro-switch at any chosen setting of flow-rate. Two switches canbe supplied to provide high and low (or low-low) flow switching.

Our UQS7 combines two built-in switchpoints, a 4-20mAanalogue output, and a digital display in a single, compact unit. Ultrasonic sensingtechnology measures time of flight between two discrete points, assuring highlyaccurate measurement with low insertion loss as compared to other types of flowsensor. Setpoints and dead-band are easily adjusted by using a built-in, user-friendly menu. Flostats maintain liquid or gas flow at a pre-selected rate regardless of line pressurefluctuations. Using an internal orifice to measure flow, the differential pressure pro-duced drives an internal control valve. Only a small pressure drop in the line isrequired for satisfactory operation.

Ideal for maintaining gas flow at a pre-selected rate, when down stream pressure fluctuates. The body of the flowswitch is a standard pipetee, BSP threaded, which contains a paddle typevane. Flow pushes the vane against magneticforces: when flow exceeds a critical value themagnet actuates a reed switch. By coarseadjustment of the reed switch position, theoutput is changed between N/O & N/Ccontacts: fine adjustment changes the flowsensitivity and switch rate.

The Micro-Bar range are two-wire loop powered 4 - 20mA transmitters based on abuilt-in capacitance based differential pressure cell for low range measurement on airand other dry gases. Standard pressure connections are push-fit sockets but units arealso available with 1/4" NPTF threads or 6mm O/D stainless steel compression fittings.The liquid crystal display shows the measured pressure and status of the alarm out-puts. Alternatively, when used in conjunction with orifice plates, pitots or other DPbased flow sensors, units can be configured to provide root extraction of the pressuremeasurement to display flow rate. Two switch outputs are programmable as flow orpressure setpoints or, for flow measurement, toprovide a totaliser output pulse.
