Note from the Editor: As of writing this, the Covid19 pandemic is still with us, but as a fraternity we are slowly starting to open back up. Hopefully everyone is adhering to the social distancing guidelines, wearing masks, and remem-bering that no cure or vaccine has yet to be pro-duced. Please act accordingly and above all, be safe. With all of that being said, we just enjoyed a Moose first—a virtual convention. While we didn’t get to en-joy Milwaukee, the Mooseheart graduation, and be-ing part of the new Pilgrim conferral, we were part of history. Our Fraternity embraced technology and pro-vided us all with the usual convention information, workshops, reports, awards and swearing in of new officers and committee persons. We have some amazing appointments, including Gloria Petrea as Grand Regent, Dawn Mackland to the Moose Chari-ties Board of Directors, Dan O’Neal as Moose Legion Vice President, and Rhonda Shockley as our Deputy Grand Regent. Personally, I was pleased to take my oath for my 3rd term on the International Communi-cations Committee. I will not only serve as a mem-ber, but was asked by the Director General to serve as the Committee’s chairman for this next term. In that role, I am the first woman to serve as a chairman of any Moose International Committee, a history-making and humbling position. I am proud to repre-sent the FMA in this role. Our now Past Supreme Governor, Rodney Hammond, was unable to visit as many lodges as he would have liked to, but I know he made a lot of new friends in the time he was able to travel. Congratulations to those brothers who were due to achieve their Pilgrim degree of service this year. I know you all were looking forward to that magical day in the Mooseheart House of God, but we’ll see you all there next year and be doubly proud of you then. Thank you all for your support of The Courier. I look forward to hearing how your lodges are doing and will save space for all of your articles in the next issue. Joan Fedora, Editor

Message from Territory Manager/FMA Liaison

Message from the FMA President

Create Our Future One Moose At the beginning of March we had visions of our Flori-da Association having a great year. With the histori-cal growth we normally see in April, we planned to fin-ish the year with 78,000 to 79,000 members with a plus 4,000 Members. We were at a plus 1828 at the end of March and all 4 Ter-

ritories were positive in membership. The WOTM also had a large positive and there was a lot of excitement with the “One Moose Concept”. That plan fell apart when COVID-19 arrived and we lost our momentum. With all Lodges closed and record unemployment, it was expected our numbers would decline. That is all history and we hope it is never repeated. We are in a new year and as we always do, the Florida Moose are coming back strong. Our Lodges are open and we have started renewing the expired members and signing

but due to circumstances there may be some changes to where we hold our meetings. You will be notified when all details are settled. Thank you for all you do and stay safe over the summer. Fraternally, . Charlie Geary, FMA President FMA President

To My Brothers and Co-Workers, As we enter July most of our Lodges are now open and we are getting back to some sort of normalcy. We are holding both regu-lar and District meetings. As I have said before, please adhere to social distancing rules and CDC recommendations as

COVID-19 is still very much with us. The “ONE MOOSE” proposal has been passed and although Florida has been practicing it for a while we must prepare for June 2021 when it takes full effect in our Lodges. Change sometimes can be hard, but if we are to succeed and grow as the best Fraternity we must avail ourselves of all the great talent at hand. Congratulations and thank you to those men and wom-en who have stepped up and taken an Officer positions in their Lodges and Chapters. It is your leadership that will set the tone for a strong and successful year for both the Lodge and Chapter. To the District Presidents and Chairpersons, I want to let you know the July Full Board meeting is still a go

new members. By keeping this momentum going we will have a record year. The first ever Virtual Moose Convention was held on June 25th and 26th and several Units took the opportunity to host the Convention at their Lodges to raise funds during this two day event. We need to keep focused on what we do and remember why we do it. We need to make sure we make every Lodge and Chapter the best they can be. We need to do only things that support Mooseheart, Moosehaven and our Communities. If we do that, our Fraternity will grow. Thanks for all you do in support of the Lodges, Chap-ters, Moose Legions, Council of Higher Degrees and our Fraternity. Never lose sight that our efforts are for the support of Mooseheart and Moosehaven. God bless Mooseheart, Moosehaven, the Moose Fraternity and, most of all, you.

Larry R. Cundiff, Territory Manager/FMA Liaison

Hello Coworkers and Brothers,

I know you have all worked hard to keep communication open and fulfill our commitments to Moose Charities through these trying times. Congratulations to all Chap-ters who made their Award of Achievement! Thank you for your hard work and commitment.

In my extra ‘at home time’ these past months I have thought a lot about my commitment to our Fraternity. What drives my passion? For me it is the three great prin-ciples of the WOTM, Faith, Hope and Charity. When you have faith, you trust or believe in something very strongly. You have confidence that what you believe in is true and you move forward and live by this.

One definition of Hope yields a meaning of a confident expectation that a desirable change is likely to happen. To have hope is to want an outcome that makes your life better in some way. It not only can help make a tough present situation more bearable, but also can eventually improve our lives because envisioning a better future mo-tivates you to take the steps to make it happen. Every-one hopes for something.

Then we have Charity. One of many definitions is an act or feeling of kindness or goodwill or a voluntary gift of money or time to those in need. This is why I am Moose: what drives your passion?

As I write I am full of excitement and anticipation over upcoming events. Soon we will be able to view the MI Virtual Convention. Will the One Moose vote pass? Who will be our incoming International officers and appoint-

Message from the Deputy Grand Regent ments? Maybe you could plan an event at your lodge and offer a viewing to all your members!

Plans are all set for our Academy of Friendship Conferral Ceremony on July 11th. We are grateful to Or-lando Lodge for hosting our event. You must register as space is limited to the first 200. Those choosing not to attend be sure to hold on to your call card and you will be able to receive their honor at next year’s FMA Mid-Year or 2021 MI Convention.

During these unpredictable times it is so important to keep an eye on your emails and keep up on MI commu-nications. Refer to the MI website often as all updated paperwork needed for officers is now available. Be sure to watch the videos provided. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and continue creating a bright future for our great Fraternity. God Bless us all, and Thank you for all you do.

Laurie Nelson, FMA Deputy Grand Regent

ing. Once members have self-identified, they are eligible to receive a specialized Membership Card, a Valued Veterans pin, and a Certifi-cate of Appreciation. Pins and certifi-cates will be presented at one annu-al recognition night which will take place in November. Newly identified Valued Veterans can opt to receive a special edition membership card at their next membership renewal to be sent at no cost.

Can you buy old age insurance? A Message From Everett Goodwin, Moosehaven Resident

I am proud to be here elbow to elbow with brother and sister Moose who take the time to care. All over this campus you hear “good morning”, “how are you today”, “have a nice day.” If you feel down a little, it’s “what can I do to help you?” In life it’s the little things that count; its what's from the heart that counts. We have it all here. We are not only smart for keeping up our dues, but we feel we are the luckiest ones.

Call someone today and get them to pay their dues before it’s too late. Ask how they are or if they need a little help. It’s your community and you could be the one who extends someone’s life. You may find a strayed member of the herd who is in need.

Good deeds do not go UN-rewarded; they lift one’s soul and warm the heart and take us down the path of a true Moose.

We at Moosehaven send this message of love to our brother and sister Moose everywhere.

The answer is yes, it’s called paying your dues, I'm in my fifth year at Moosehaven and getting younger each day. I can't fathom why any-body would drop the world’s greatest insurance policy ever devised, to me

it’s been a gift from God.

People throw thousands of dollars at other policies that run out when you get sick or need a nursing home and all your assets are taken from you.

Moose dues are less than one hundred dollars a year, yet so many drop their dues after one year: doesn't make any sense to residents living at Moosehaven. This shows a poor job in ori-entation! Some seem to think it’s an exclusive club for those of higher degrees. This is so far from the truth. It’s for all qualified members. Photo courtesy of Marge Walter

MOOSEHEART By GARY URWILER, Executive Director

As we have watched the tragic events in Minnesota unfold, and the ensuing reactions across not only our country, but the world, we feel saddened and con-cerned. Saddened by the fact that not all citizens are treated equally, and concerned that there is still fear and distrust among communities, ethnicities, and indi-viduals with differing life experiences. The Mooseheart community is represented by a very diverse group of individuals, whether students, educa-tors, family teachers, staff or consultants. Nearly every race, religion and orientation have at one time called

our campus their home and we have tried, regardless of situation, to provide the best possible life for all while they have been here. We know that we can’t possibly see things from the same perspective, but we pledge we will continue to be there to learn, to honor and listen to one another out of respect and love. We call on others to join us in promoting toler-ance, equality and respect.

Merritt Island Hight School Project Graduataion

Community Service

Veterans Home in Port Charlotte accepts donation from Englewood Lodge

Merritt Island Moose Lodge Loyal Order of the Moose 2073 and Women of the Moose 1544 Heart of the Community donated $500 to Merritt Island High School Project Graduation

The mission of MIHS Project Graduation is to keep our seniors and community safe by reducing the num-ber of young people involved in drug and/or alcohol related accidents on graduation night in the Merritt Is-land community.

Merritt Island High School Project Graduation was es-tablished in 1985 by Mike Ferger after our community, like many others, had suffered accidents, overdose, and even loss of life due to post graduation celebrations.

Mr. Ferger heard about the program that was started in Maine and decided to bring it to Merritt Island High. The MIHS Project Graduation Organization has continued the program and there has not been a graduation night tragedy

since. Project Graduation saves lives. Project Graduation is funded entirely by generous donations from businesses, parents & community partners along with fundraising. Project Graduation receives no funding from our school district, and is a 501(c)3 organization. Submitted by Marv Gardner

Lodge Hosts Membership workshop following post pandemic District Meeting FMA News

Photos courtesy of Marge Walter

Territory 21 Manager Roy Rawl-ings led a Moose membership and retention workshop on Sat-urday, June 20th, following a Dis-trict 10 Meeting at Lake Shore Lodge 2020. Assisting Roy were Charlie Titheridge, past chairman of the FBMA Historical Commit-tee and current ATM and Lodge Leadership and House Commit-tee trainer, and Joan Fedora, Chairman of the FMA Publica-tions Committee and Chairman of the International Communica-tions Committee. Roy presented survey results out-lining reasons members renewed or failed to renew. Ideas for im-proving lodges and attracting members were exchanged. Mem-bers discussed improvements at their lodges and how the pan-demic had affected them. Ulti-mately, everyone agreed that signing up quality members and mentoring them is preferred over signing up more members that never renew. Charlie covered some history of the Moose including some interesting facts about the changes in membership numbers since the founding of the Fraternity. The impact of the vari-ous means of communicating were discussed by Joan, along with a brief discussion of communications etiquette. Consid-ering the current conditions, attendance was very good and

participation in discussions enthusiastic and hopeful. Roy is planning on holding one workshop every quar-ter in Ocala, Brooksville, and Tallahassee. Dates to be determined. Check the FMA website calendar for dates and times. Submitted by Joan Fedora, Chairman FMA Publications Commit-tee

If you attended this year’s Moose International Con-vention online, you were among the first to hear about Florida’s newest International appointees and hon-orees. Named 2020-2021 Grand Regent was Gloria Petrea, who took her oath live during the virtual broad-cast. Also on hand to chair the convention was out-going Supreme Governor Rodney Hammond, who was honored with an official Supreme Council Resolution. Other announcements included Dawn Mackland’s ap-pointment to the Moose Charities Board, Dan O’Neal’s new position as Vice President of the Moose Legion Council. Our FMA Deputy Grand Regent for 2020-2021 will be Rhonda Shockley of West Boca Chapter 2273. Scott Hart also announced that the very first Chairman of a Moose Inernational Committee would be yours truly, Joan Fedora Mandarin 1218, leading the International Communications Committee. Moose Legion Ambassadors include: John Haystead, Raymond Bennett, Clinton Anderson, and Gerard Du-bois. Deputy Supreme Governors for 2020-2021 will be John Koelling and Tom Burnam. Not to be outdone, our very own James “Grumpy” Malsbury was recognized for his years of service to our fraternity. As pointed out by the Director General, Grumpy received this honor on his 90th birthday. We wish him the very best and look forward to many more years of service here in Florida from Grumpy.

MOOSE INTERNATIONAL VIRTUAL CONVENTION FMA International Appointees announced at virtual convention

As you all know by know the One Moose general laws ad-mendments were approved by more than 76% of the vote. Communications have been sent out and posted on the In-ternational and FMA websites regarding the changes and related dates of same. There will continue to be questions about the transition and Moose International will continue to review and resolve all of the issues associated with this exciting change. Let’s hope we can all be together again next year in Cincin-nati for our first One Moose convention! Be safe. Submittted by Joan Fedora

Winners of the annual Moose Journalism Awards were announced on Friday morning of the virtual convention. Once again Florida journalists managed to capture awards for their newsletters and news stories. I can assure you that the competition was plentiful, so I was excited to see that Florida came through again this year.

As always, I encourage all of our newsletter editors to sub-mit their newsletter and news stories for next year’s compe-tition. When we judge, we look at every aspect, including subject matter, use of photos and graphics,, readability, rele-vant information, etc. We know that skill levels can vary and we take everything into consideration. You might be surprised to find your newsletter or story takes home a prize next year. If you have questions or concerns you can reach me at [email protected].. Submitted by Joan Fedora

More Moose International Convention

If you have been around me during a day in the office over the course of the last 15 years, then you have probably heard me say, “It is going to be big day at Mooseheart today!” No doubt that every day at Mooseheart, Moosehaven and in our Lodges has the potential to be a “big day”; but Friday, June 26, 2021 at approximately 7:15 pm changed the way I define what is and what isn’t a “big day.” The Judiciary Committee report was read on the floor of the Convention which included the results of a momentous delegate vote.

I don’t feel I’m going too far out on a limb by saying the General Law amendment vote that rewrote the way for a unified fraternity was the most important in our 132-year history. I am proud to be part of an organization that recognized the need to change and brought gender equality to our Lodge membership. Doing this on the first vote with 77% of the delegates approving the amendments is absolutely incredi-

ble! Congratulations and cheers to a brighter future because of this giant step forward.

Given the weight and complexity of the move to a One Moose Lodge membership model, it is going to take a little time to prepare for a smooth transition. The date of May 1, 2021 will usher in the slate of organizational changes and when we get to Cincinnati, Ohio for the 133rd Annual International Moose Convention (June 30 – July 4, 2021), we can celebrate the dawning of a new era in our Moose fraternity.

Congratulations to all who have been elected or appointed to serve our fraternity on a Board, Council, or Committee, or as a Deputy Grand Regent, Deputy Supreme Governor or Moose Legion Ambassador. None of this would have been possible without your leadership and willingness to consider the needs of others greater than your own. I appreci-ate your commitment to our Moose fraternity – together we are unstoppable – together we are One Moose! God Bless!

If you have a concern or idea you’d like to share with me, use our online form: “Tell the Director General.”

Virtual Run will benefit Youth Ranches

FLORIDA SHERIFFS YOUTH RANCHES

Each year the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches has a plethora of special events held on our behalf by very generous supporting groups. Due to the pandemic, several of these events had to be canceled and a few postponed with a loss of donations estimated be-tween $300,000 to $350,000 which is significant to our mission.

For the last 15 years the Hillsborough County Sher-iff’s Office has held their annual “Ranch Run”, rais-ing a total of $242,600 in support of the Youth Ranches. Due to restrictions of Covid-19, they are having their very first HCSO Virtual Together We Go Further Run. This means that anyone in the state can participate. The virtual run is simply a way to enjoy this event in your own time and in your own space. Each runner will receive a runners packet, shirt, and medal. Submitting your results are com-pletely optional, however, there will be special awards given in a few categories if you do submit.

Registration will begin Saturday July 4th and remain open through Saturday August 1st. To register or find more information, please visit the HCSO Charities page or click https://hcsocharities.com/marketplace/ols/categories/hcso-together-we-go-further-run.

Feel free to share this information with friends and family or your social media. This is a fun and unique way to get out of the house, enjoy some sunshine and support the cause we all know and love. We are so very grateful for the continued support of our sheriff’s through these unprecedented times. Please reach out to me if you have any questions and if you do participate please send pictures.
