Water Quality Monitoring

Page 2: Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Steering Committee Meeting Marathon, 2/12/2014

Monitoring Water Quality in FKNMS • Establish baseline information about FKNMS waters

• Document events, both chronic and episodic

• Assess trends or changes in WQ over time • Explain causes in WQ changes (internal & external driver)

• Provide relevant information for resource management decisions • Document compliance practices (regulatory)

•Educate public & stakeholders about water quality *

Page 3: Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Steering Committee Meeting Marathon, 2/12/2014

As of Feb 2014

Page 4: Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Steering Committee Meeting Marathon, 2/12/2014

EPA developed Strategic Targets for the Water Quality Monitoring Project

…”maintain the overall water quality of the near shore and coastal waters of the FKNMS according to 2005 baseline”…

– For reef sites• chlorophyll a should be ≤ 0.35 µ l-1

• vertical attenuation coefficient Kd ≤0.2 m-1

– For all monitoring sites in FKNMS• dissolved inorganic nitrogen DIN

≤0.10 mg/l• total phosphorus, TP ≤ 0.0077 mg/l
