    Presidentʼs Message

    thankful for the great volunteers

I was privileged to work with.

Their dedication to bonsai mademy job much easier as well as a

pleasure to do. Many of these

    volunteers are the grandfathers of

BSF and many will be the future

    grandfathers and grandmothers

of this great organization. I have

    heard people talk about great

    bonsai people whom I have

never met and who now are

gone. I now have stories to tell

about the joys of working with

    great bonsai people. Thank you

for treating me as one of you andhelping me along the way. Your

    advice and guidance will never

    be forgotten.

    BSF grew

    great and strong

    because it grew

    slowly and well

    at the hands of

    those before us.

    Their great care and guidance

    helped cement our foundation

and nurtured us along the way.

We need to remember that anorganization grows slowly. Much

talent came before us to create

this group, and their vision was

to share our art and to organize

    our efforts. Times are changing

    Well my

    two years

    have comeand gone

    faster than I

    like to think,

and this is my last Presidentʼs

    letter before the passing of

the torch. It has been a great

    experience for me to have

been President of such a ne

    organization. We have shared

    some troubling times in our

world and I feel our common

interest in bonsai has helped us

get through these difcult times.I have learned a great many

things and in spite of the times

    have shared the

    experience of

    two wonderful

    years in bonsai.

    The greatestexperiences of

    being President

    of such a grand organization

    were its people. These are

the people who share such an

interesting and ever changing artcalled bonsai. Our common bond

brings such a wide variety of

    professional talents and beautiful

people to make a melting pot

    of art and masterpieces. Iʼm

“ Let me look upward into

    the branches of the towering

oak and know that it grew

great and strong, because itgrew slowly and well”

and so is BSF. We are trying as

others before us to bring BSF

into the future and to create trees

that have the power to inspire

awe and wonder. We have seenchange and will see much more

in the future. People are not

    always happy with change, but

our vision is for the good of our

art. I hope our changes made

everyone smile, and you see our

vision as we did in making these

changes. We are all part of BSF

and we all need to leave a piece

of ourselves to create the legacy

of BSF. Please contribute to our

vision and the vision of those

who came before us. Our historyis rich and BSF should be proud

    of our hard working dedicated

people who do this for the joy of

    bonsai. The next time someone

asks you, “what has BSF done

for me”, reply to their question,

“what have you done for BSF?”

    Consider what one BSF member,

Lee Vanderpool has done for his

art and his fellow members as

noted in this issue. It is time for

others–you to step up and take

the lead. BSF is our legacy andour history is what we leave for

those who follow us in search

of the art of bonsai. It is an

    organized effort to bring bonsai

to the people of Florida. I thank

you again, those who helped me

in my term, and I will see you in

    my bonsai travels and continue

to help move BSF and Florida

bonsai into the future. I hope tosee you all at the convention and

    annual meeting where we will

pass the torch to the next group

    in our long history.

I leave you with the following

parting message and hope itinspires you in your art of

    bonsai:

“It is not difcult to imagine

    how, with their huge trunks

    reaching upwards from their

anchors in the earth and their

    branches seeming to touch the

sky, some of the worldʼs giant

and most ancient trees – whose

life spans far exceed those of

    human beings – should have

    seemed immortal and come to

occupy a special place withinthe greater scheme of things: to

    appear in some way connected

    with the forces governing the

earth, and to be able to directly

    inuence peoplesʼ lives.”

    From the Book Ancient Trees

    by Anna Lewington & Edward

    Parker

    Happy trails to you all.

    From the Editor . . .

    Gulp!

Lee! What do I do next?

I hope to do everything I can to

    put out a quality magazine.

    My vision is that  Florida

     Bonsai   will be the world

    renown source of information

for “tropical bonsai.” For thereaders, it will be your reference

    document to keep your bonsai

    healthy and beautifully

    designed. Additionally, it will

be a reference for activities and

    events that support your efforts

    to create and sustain bonsai.

I have too often heard, “I

    never knew there were such

    specimens, or that Florida had

    such remarkable bonsai.”

This attitude almost costus a bonsai exhibit at the

    Morikami Museum. People in

other parts of the country who

    want to purchase a specimen,

    likewise, have no knowledge

of the potential of sub-tropicalmaterials. Additionally, they

have no idea what to do with a

    tropical bonsai.

    > For more, see page 20

In an effort to provide you

    with the best information and

    service, I am trying experiments

in an effort to make this the best

    possible magazine.

All members will continue toget a magazine, as usual.

Starting with this issue, I will,

    additionally, send anyone a

second copy of the same issue in

    total color—via Email.

It is outrageously expensiveto print a color magazine. But

it doesnʼt cost anything to send

you a complete copy in full color

    by Email.

    Of course a complete magazine

is a large le, and it will take alittle while to download it.

    Adobe Reader, the software

needed to open the le is

available free on our BSF web

    site:

    http://www.bonsai-bsf.com/publications.htm. Select “Get

    Acrobat Reader”, download and

install it. This will open the PDF

le of the magazine in color.

     PHOSPHORUS THE KEY TO

     LIFE AND BEAUTY

    By Warren Hill

    When planning the feeding

    schedule of Bonsai, the element

    phosphorus should share the top

of the fertilizer list with nitrogen

in terms of frequency and rates

    of application. This important

    element which is called “The

key to life”, due to itʼs direct

    involvement

    in most life

    processes, is

    a component

    of every

    living cell and

    normally is found concentrated

in the growing tips and seeds of

    most plants.

    The supply of phosphorus

in a Bonsai soil can be even

    more crucial than the nitrogen

supply in terms of overall plant

    performance and health. The

    importance of phosphorus on

vital plant parts such as rootage,

owers, seeds and the new growth

of each branch and twig can notbe overstated. As an example,

    cells cannot divide unless there

    is adequate phosphorus to form

    the extra nucleus. Therefore, a

    deciency in phosphorus causes

    stunting and delayed maturity.

In addition to this, the lack of

    phosphorus slows down the

    conversion of sugar into starch

and cellulose. This results in a

buildup of sugar in the leaves

and stems and shows up as

    purple streaks or spots. Another

    phosphorus deciency symptom

    is dark green coloration of

    leaves and

    stems. This

    ab n o r ma l ly

    high level of

    ch lorophyl l

    results whenphosphorus is decient and

    nitrogen is abundant.

    The effects of low phosphorus

levels in the soil is tolerated in

    different degrees by the many

plant types used in Bonsai. Thecommonly asked questions such

as, “Why doesnʼt my tree have

more vigor?” or, “Why donʼt my

trees ower and fruit, I feed and

    water them regularly?”

    “Why doesnʼt my tree

    have more vigor?” or,

    “Why donʼt my trees

ower and fruit, I feed and

    water them regularly?”

    One traveling master made an

    impression. Walter Pall seemed

to get our attention with the blowtorch? Everyone seemed to be

    startled and impressed with his

burning of the dead wood with a

    small butane torch.

    I know I was.

Have you ever read or seen thefollowing:

    “Remove all

    loose and de-

    cayed bark from

    inside the folds of

    the trunk. Burn-

    ing the area with

    a blow torch will

    make it easier to

    remove plus aid

    in preservation.

    Clean off the

    surface and applylime sulphur to

    the entire trunk.”

    Who said that?

    John Naka

    When?Vol. 15, 1981, Calif. B.S.

If you havenʼt tried this you

need to. Just be careful. This is

In a recent issue of a major

bonsai magazine, (I could notnd when I need it.) I noted the

    remarkable

    discovery

    by the

    author, that

    it was theshade that

    encouraged

    root growth

    f r o m

    branches.

    H o w e v e r. . .

In the winter issue of Florida

    Bonsai, 1979, Joe Samuels

wrote an article that “shade” is

the secret of drop roots from the

    branches.

What else is new? (Even this

    question seems to have been

    asked a long time ago.)

It was written, a loooong time

    ago:

“The thing that hath been, it is

that which shall be; and thatwhich is done is that which

shall be done: and there is no

    new thing under the sun.”

    “The words of the ʻPreacher,ʼ

the son of David, King of Jeru-

salem.” Eccl. Cptr. 1, Vr. 9

It was a good season for learning/relearning.

a great way to treat new carved

shari or jins. It sterilizes the

    immediate area, puts a beautiful

nish on the wood, and makes it

    look like natural weathering.

It will be a while, but you need

to see the great job Ben Oki

did on a humungus ilex. Spent

    half the demonstration time

getting it into the pot. As of this

writing there are buds and leaves

    throughout most of the trunks,

    and looking for more.

As hot as it has been for therst half of March, it is hard to

remember how cold it was and

for how long. We had serious

    cold damage, causing exceeding

anxiety for those who work on

them. So far we havenʼt lost

    anything, and all damage seems

to be roaring back with new

    growth.

    Our experiment in January

with our Bonsai Retreat was a

    qualied success. We learned

a lot. What we need is more

    people learning-something.

    Boy, did we

    have an early

    spring! Then

    we got cold

    nights again.(?)

    Everything is busting out.

    Thanks to Kawa, Treasure

Coast, Palm Beach, CentralFlorida, and BSF for donating

    new rock stands for major

    bonsai exhibit displays. Get you

club on board, and put out your

    stand. This has been advertised

throughout the last coupleissues, no need to repeat them

here. If you have a question,

    call. In July

    the donation

    r e q u i r e d

    to “name”a bonsai

    stand goes

    from $500

    to $5,000.

    Those stands

I guarantee you never had an

    experience like it.

The purpose of the Retreat was

to hear from people interested inbonsai–and educate them and

    the public. How many places

do people ask for your input and

really listen? I mean listen with

an easel and pen taking down

all input and translating it forthe Board of Trustees of BSF.

There is no way the Board can

do what you want if you donʼt

express it. You really need to

    take advantage of opportunities

to express what you want and

    need to improve your bonsai

    experience.

    The best thing

    that could happen

    to provide

    this service tomembers is

    for the local

    clubs to take

    the opportunity

    to take the lead

in such an event. Those of uswho work at the Museum will

    provide the facility and workers

to make it happen. This is an

    invitation to all clubs, especially,

    Gold Coast, Light House, and

    Clearly the problem was

    advertising and informing people

    about what could happen.

The Retreat was an effort bythe volunteers to provide a venue

for people interested in bonsai. I

must add that the Morikami staff

put in a lot of hours as well, and

    provided a lot of assistance—we

could not have done it withoutthem. (They learned as well.)

    Thanks to BSF, we had

Ben Oki do a workshop and

    demonstration all open to the

    public. We had facilitated

    discussion sessions. There

were vendors there to sell and

assist novices with their bonsai. We had an exhibit critique with

    experts doing the evaluation.

And there was a Hiaku walk—

you must try this. Done right,

    Once again, members of

BSF have had the opportunityto exhibit truly quality bonsai

to thousands of people at the

    Walt Disney Epcot Japanese

    Pavilion during Disneyʼs annual

    International Flower and Garden

Festival. For the past 10 years

BSF has loaned up to 20 trees

each year in a win-win working

    partnership with Walt Disney

    World.

    As requested in the August

    2003 issue of Florida Bonsai,

    many members submitted an

    application and photos of their

    bonsai to be candidates for

    the annual display at Disneyʼs

    Festival. The BSF Epcot

    committee assisted in selection

of the nal bonsai to be presented

    to the Disney organization. This

    year twenty bonsai were selected

and are on display from April

    25th to until June 8, 2003.

    Additionally, BSF members

are involved in bonsai “TipsFrom the Pros” presentations at

    the Festival each Tuesday during

    the 6-week festival period.

    Looking ahead, The BSF

    Epcot Committee would like to

see more exhibit applicationsfrom other parts of Florida,

    so watch for the application

    information for 2004 in the

    upcoming August 2003 edition

    of Florida Bonsai Magazine.

Having oneʼs bonsai art atEpcot is an honor, and we are

very proud to show the world the

bonsai, pictured in this issue, and

thank those who took the time to

    prepare and nurture these trees

and transport them to and from

Epcot. Thanks also go to the

    BSF personnel that administered

    and coordinated this event with

    Disneyʼs horticulture staff.

     These questions often reect

    the frustrations many feel when

caring efforts are made and theirresults are disappointing due to

    poor plant performance.

    Upon investigation, the cause

    of these problems many times

turn out to be an imbalance in

the soilʼs nitrogen/phosphorusratio. This can be caused by the

    over reliance on single element

    fertilizers such as blood meal

or hoof and horn (nitrogen) or,

a “locking up” of the existing

phosphorus by the combinationof excessive levels of iron and

a low pH level, (below pH

    6.0). The product produced by

    this combination is called “iron

    phosphate”. The phosphorus

after being changed to thismaterial becomes insoluble and

    therefore unavailable to the plant

    so that deciencies commonly

    result.

If you must feed your tree

extra iron to counteract thechlorosis brought on by alkaline

    soils I recommend feeding

    extra amounts of phosphorus.

Of course the ideal solution to

this problem would be to lower

the pH to the near neutral to

    slightly acid condition by some

    means other than iron chelate.

(The most favorable pH forphosphorus availability is pH

    6.5 to 7.0.)

In regards to the extra iron,

    only trace amounts are needed,

so there is usually more than

enough for the plants needsin the near neutral pH range

    with normal feeding. Problems

    also occur with phosphorus

    availability under mildly

    alkaline conditions. In the

range of pH 8.0 and slightlyabove the phosphorus reacts

    with the abundance of calcium

    that is usually present and

    forms low-solubility calcium

    phosphates. This again causes

    deciencies unless extra amounts

of phosphorus are added to the

    feeding schedule.

    Strangely enough, at pH levels

    of 9.0 or above phosphorus

    availability is not a problem.

    Strongly alkaline conditions

    usually indicates large amounts

    of sodium are present instead

    of calcium. The combining of

    phosphorus and sodium creates

    sodium phosphate which is

< Phosphate; contʼd fm page 1

  • 8/19/2019 Florida Bonsai - May 03 - Screen

    26/48

    May 2003 - 18

    highly soluble and therefore

    available for plant intake.

    However, the other problems

    created such as poor soil

    structure, low oxygen levels, and

    other nutrient deciencies far

    outweigh what advantages one

    would get from the increased

    phosphorus levels in these high

    pH sodic soils.

    From the above discussion it

becomes obvious that most of the

    phosphorus deciency problems

    stem from itʼs interaction with

other elements in the soil solution.

    It is usually advantageous to

    apply phosphorus fertilizers

    in concentrated bands in the

    pot rather than mixing them

    throughout the soil. This

    procedure makes the phosphorus

    less vulnerable to being dissolved

rapidly and then precipitated inless soluble forms.

    The choice of which fertilizer

to use to fulll the phosphorus

    requirements generally depends

    on three factors.

      I. Type of plant

      2. Soil reaction (pH)

      3. Soil formula

    Since phosphoric acid is

    instrumental in forming the

    plants reproductive parts such as

owers and fruit, it is important

    that Bonsai such as wisteria,

    crabapple, apricot, plum, and

    pomegranate (just to mention a

    few) receive additional amounts

    of phosphorus in relation to

    the amounts normally supplied

    in a “balanced” fertilizer such

    as cottonseed meal. Other

trees such as conifers and the

    deciduous species rely heavily

    on phosphorus for promoting

    healthy new growth and a

    vigorous root system. The

     procedure of applying extra

phosphorus to the new soilduring repotting promotes the

    rapid recovery of the damaged

    roots and greatly hastens the

    return of the plants overall

    stamina and vigor. (Emphasis

    added-Ed.)Flowering plants that are

grown in a soil that has a high

    organic content such as azaleas

generally do not need the extra

    phosphorus feeding schedule to

perform well. This type of soilnormally has a high level of

    organic-phosphorus that is able

to supply much of the plants

    needs, a well balanced acid

    fertilizer will usually sufce

    under these conditions.

    Most Bonsai growers are

familiar with packaged bonemeal (steamed) as a common

    source of phosphoric acid,

    however, the alkaline reaction

    of this fertilizer should be

    considered when planning your

feeding schedule. If you live ina part of the country that has

    an acid build-up problem then

of course this high pH product

could work to your advantage in

    helping to counteract the excess

    acidity.

If you live in the drier areas

    such as the southwest that

    usually have an excess of

    calcium and sodium in their

waters and soils, then bone meal

    would not be recommended due

    to the alkalinity factor. (Beware

of our lime stone rich Florida

    soils-Ed!) The better choice for

this set of conditions would be

    superphosphate which has a near

neutral pH reaction in the soil.

    Precise formulas and amounts

of phosphorus to be used are

difcult to give due to the many

    variables involved. However,

as a rule of thumb, I wouldsay that for most conifers and

    deciduous trees equal amounts

    of nitrogen and phosphorus

would be adequate. In the case

    of owering and fruiting trees

the ratio would be closer to two

    parts phosphorus to one part

    nitrogen. Plant response and

    personal experience will provide

each grower with the best ratios

    and quantities for their unique

    set of cultural conditions.

If you cannot nd the front,
