I. PURPOSE
TheFloricultureCareerDevelopmentEventisdesignedtopromotethestudyofand
interestinfloricultureincludingcropproduction(plantpropagationandgreenhouse
management)andfloristretailingofflowers,plants,andfoliagethroughtheagricultural
educationcurriculum.
II. OBJECTIVESA. Identifyfloricultureandbeddingplantmaterials.B. Identifyandunderstandtreatmentofunhealthyplantsduetopest,nutritional,
mechanicalorchemicalinjury.C. Understandthebiologicalandscientificprinciplesanddeveloptheskillsunderlying
propagation,growthrequirements,growingtechniques,harvesting,marketingand
maintenanceofestablishedfloricultureplants.D. Understandprinciplesanddevelopskillsoffloraldesign.E. Identifyandselectappropriatesuppliesandequipmentforthefloristand
greenhouse.F. Understandtheuseofsafetyproceduresandpracticesincludingpesticideusein
floricultureoperations.G. Beabletosolvecommonmathematicproblemsforthegreenhouseandflorist
industry.H. Understandinterpersonalskillsnecessaryforsuccessfulemploymentinthe
floricultureindustry.I. Understandgeneralbusinesspracticesappropriatetothefloricultureindustry.
III. EVENTRULES
A. Aschoolmayenteronlyoneteam,consistingoffourmembers,inthisevent.The
scoreforateamwillbecalculatedfromallfourmembers’accruedpoints.
B. Aschoolwithoutateammayenteruptothreeindividualstocompeteforindividual
awards.

3.Problem-Solving/Decision-Making(mathematicalcomputations,disease
disorders,weeds,insects,pesticidesafety,greenhouseandfloristequipment,
andhandlinghazardoussituations).
4.Makingadishgarden
D. Onlythosestudentswhoarecompetingwillbeallowedtoparticipateinthisevent.
E. Undernocircumstanceswillanyparticipantbeallowedtotouchorhandleplant
materialduringtheeventexceptwheninstructedbytheeventstaff.
F. Anyassistancegiventoaparticipantfromanysourceduringtheevent,otherthan
floricultureofficial,willbesufficientcausetoeliminatetheteamfromtheevent.

1. AnentryofoneteamconsistingoffourmembersORuptothreeindividuals
perschool.B. Equipment
1. Studentsareresponsibleforbringingtheirownclipboardfreeofnotesor
paper,pensandpencils,andabasiccalculator.(Nocellphonecalculators
maybeused.)Clipboardsmustbecleanandfreeofnotesorpaper.
2. EventsuperintendentwillprovideFloricultureScansheetandFloricultureID
Lists.

D. IdentificationofPlantMaterials(200points)1. Eachcontestantwillberequiredtoidentify40specimens(5pointseach)
fromthe“OklahomaStateFloricultureCDEPlantList.”2. ContestantsmustbubbletheIDnumber,representingtheappropriatename,
nexttothenumberofthespecimenbeingidentifiedonthescansheet.3. Duplicatespecimensmaybeusedandmayberepresentedbyseedling,
pottedplants,cutflowersand/oraleaforstemsample.4. Eachparticipantwillbeallowed1minuteperspecimentocompletethe
phaseoftheevent.5. Allparticipantswillparticipateinthisactivity.
E. GeneralKnowledgeExamination(250points)
1. Thisportionoftheeventwillconsistof50questions(5pointseach),
addressingbasichorticulturalknowledge,withafocusonfloriculture.
2. QuestionswillbewrittenusingtheCIMCIntroductiontoHorticulture,3rd
Edition.
3. Questionsmaybemultiplechoice,true-false,and/ormatchingformat(s).
4. Eachparticipantwillbeallowed50minutestocompletethisphaseofthe
event.
5. Allparticipantswillparticipateinthisactivity.
F. Problem-Solving/Decision-Making(200points)1. Eachparticipantwillsolve20multiple-choiceproblems(10pointseach)
relatedtothevariousaspectsofthefloricultureindustry.2. Eachproblemwilldescribethesituationorcreatetheproblem,andprovide
possiblesolutionstotheproblem.3. Theparticipantmustdecideonthebestpossiblesolutiontotheproblem.4. Allmaterialsnecessarytosolvetheproblemwillbeavailabletothe
participantashe/shesolvestheproblem.5. Thisportionoftheeventwillalsoincludequestionsrelatedtomathematical
computations,diseasedisorders,weeds,insects,pesticidesafety,
greenhouseandfloristequipment,andhandlinghazardoussituations

G. Practicum(75points)Eachcontestantwillmakeadishgardenandprepareanitemizedbill.Usingthe
materialsprovided,participantswillbeallowed20minutestocompletetheir
dishgardenanditemizedbills.Theeventassistantatthebeginningofthe
practicumwillprovideparticipantstheRETAILpriceoftheplantsthattheywill
useintheirdishgardens.TheMARKUPwillbebuiltintotheretailprice.When
theparticipanthasdeterminedthetotaldishgardenprice,heorshehas
includedthemarkup.Retailcostofplantsgiventotheparticipantwillbe
determinedafterpollingflorists/gardencenterstodeterminetheircurrentretail
pricesontheplantsusedintheevent.Scoringcriteriaarepresentedonthedish
gardenpracticumscorecardwhichwillberecordedbyajudge.
