OK CDE 2016 FLORICULTURE 4 Member Team IMPORTANT NOTE Please thoroughly read the General CDE Rules Section at the beginning of this handbook for complete rules and procedures that are relevant to State FFA Career Development Events. I. PURPOSE The Floriculture Career Development Event is designed to promote the study of and interest in floriculture including crop production (plant propagation and greenhouse management) and florist retailing of flowers, plants, and foliage through the agricultural education curriculum. II. OBJECTIVES A. Identify floriculture and bedding plant materials. B. Identify and understand treatment of unhealthy plants due to pest, nutritional, mechanical or chemical injury. C. Understand the biological and scientific principles and develop the skills underlying propagation, growth requirements, growing techniques, harvesting, marketing and maintenance of established floriculture plants. D. Understand principles and develop skills of floral design. E. Identify and select appropriate supplies and equipment for the florist and greenhouse. F. Understand the use of safety procedures and practices including pesticide use in floriculture operations. G. Be able to solve common mathematic problems for the greenhouse and florist industry. H. Understand interpersonal skills necessary for successful employment in the floriculture industry. I. Understand general business practices appropriate to the floriculture industry. III. EVENT RULES A. A school may enter only one team, consisting of four members, in this event. The score for a team will be calculated from all four members’ accrued points. B. A school without a team may enter up to three individuals to compete for individual awards.

D. Onlythosestudentswhoarecompetingwillbeallowedtoparticipateinthisevent.

E. Undernocircumstanceswillanyparticipantbeallowedtotouchorhandleplant

materialduringtheeventexceptwheninstructedbytheeventstaff.

F. Anyassistancegiventoaparticipantfromanysourceduringtheevent,otherthan

floricultureofficial,willbesufficientcausetoeliminatetheteamfromtheevent.

IV. EVENTFORMATA. TeamMake-Up

1. Studentsareresponsibleforbringingtheirownclipboardfreeofnotesor

paper,pensandpencils,andabasiccalculator.(Nocellphonecalculators

2. EventsuperintendentwillprovideFloricultureScansheetandFloricultureID

Lists.

fromthe“OklahomaStateFloricultureCDEPlantList.”2. ContestantsmustbubbletheIDnumber,representingtheappropriatename,

nexttothenumberofthespecimenbeingidentifiedonthescansheet.3. Duplicatespecimensmaybeusedandmayberepresentedbyseedling,

pottedplants,cutflowersand/oraleaforstemsample.4. Eachparticipantwillbeallowed1minuteperspecimentocompletethe

phaseoftheevent.5. Allparticipantswillparticipateinthisactivity.

E. GeneralKnowledgeExamination(250points)

1. Thisportionoftheeventwillconsistof50questions(5pointseach),

addressingbasichorticulturalknowledge,withafocusonfloriculture.

2. QuestionswillbewrittenusingtheCIMCIntroductiontoHorticulture,3rd

Edition.

3. Questionsmaybemultiplechoice,true-false,and/ormatchingformat(s).

4. Eachparticipantwillbeallowed50minutestocompletethisphaseofthe

event.

5. Allparticipantswillparticipateinthisactivity.

F. Problem-Solving/Decision-Making(200points)1. Eachparticipantwillsolve20multiple-choiceproblems(10pointseach)

relatedtothevariousaspectsofthefloricultureindustry.2. Eachproblemwilldescribethesituationorcreatetheproblem,andprovide

possiblesolutionstotheproblem.3. Theparticipantmustdecideonthebestpossiblesolutiontotheproblem.4. Allmaterialsnecessarytosolvetheproblemwillbeavailabletothe

participantashe/shesolvestheproblem.5. Thisportionoftheeventwillalsoincludequestionsrelatedtomathematical

G. Practicum(75points)Eachcontestantwillmakeadishgardenandprepareanitemizedbill.Usingthe

materialsprovided,participantswillbeallowed20minutestocompletetheir

dishgardenanditemizedbills.Theeventassistantatthebeginningofthe

practicumwillprovideparticipantstheRETAILpriceoftheplantsthattheywill

useintheirdishgardens.TheMARKUPwillbebuiltintotheretailprice.When

theparticipanthasdeterminedthetotaldishgardenprice,heorshehas

includedthemarkup.Retailcostofplantsgiventotheparticipantwillbe

determinedafterpollingflorists/gardencenterstodeterminetheircurrentretail

pricesontheplantsusedintheevent.Scoringcriteriaarepresentedonthedish

gardenpracticumscorecardwhichwillberecordedbyajudge.
