CAROL’S COMMENTS
I’ve been thinking…November is filled with Oppor-
tunities for Ministry...All-
Saints to the First Sunday of Advent! The
conclusion of the Season after Pentecost in
Ordinary Time that seemed so far away in
July is rapidly approaching and with it the
beginning of a new church year and the Sea-
son of Advent, the time for
reflection and preparation for the coming
again of Jesus. During worship on the Sun-
days of November we will:
Celebrate Holy Communion and All-
Saints November 1, with one service at
10:30 and the sharing of the names of the
Saints folks want to remember. The Nomi-
nations and Lay Leadership Development
Committee will offer to the Saints in attend-
ance the opportunity to put their names on
whatever Ministry Team(s) they would like
to serve on…more about the options later.
Recognize Veteran’s and their families on
November 8.

ing the 10:30 Service of Worship Novem-

velopment Committee. We have decided to
secure the Chairs of Committees, Work Ar-
eas and Teams, but want to encourage each
person to discern for her or himself gifts
for ministry, passion for serving and sign-
up to serve. Options are F inance, Trustees,
Staff-Parish Relations, Nurture, and Out-
reach. Nurture and Outreach are new Work

tion, a representative of United Methodist
Men, United Methodist Women, the Pray-
er Shawl Ministry, the Covenant Group,
Small Groups, and Emerging Ministries. It
is the hope of the Committee that this
group will support the work of each of the
ministries represented and dream dreams
about other Nurture needs of the congrega-
tion. Outreach currently will include Pow-
er of Florence Pancake Breakfast, Free
Lunch, Warming Center, Habitat for Hu-
manity and Emerging Ministries. It is the
hope of the Committee that this group will
support the work of each of the ministries
represented and dream dreams about other
Outreach opportunities for the congrega-
tion.
-Commitment Sunday…a time to estimate
your financial support for God’s mission
through the ministries of this congregation.
The Finance Committee asks that if you
have not already begun to discern through
prayer what your financial commitment to
this congregation will be for next year, that
you begin so that you will be prepared to
put your name and an amount on an Esti-
mate of Giving on November 15.
-All-Church Conference is the yearly gath-
ering with the District Superintendent to
receive reports of ministry over the past
year and to look to the future. All members
of the congregation in attendance at the
meeting will be able to vote on the election
of Lay Leaders for next year, the pastor’s
salary, the Certification and Re-
Certification of Lay Servant Leaders, and
action related to the removal of members.
-Hanging of the Greens is a service of
preparation of our worship area and our
hearts for the coming again of Christ in our
midst. We will be reminded with scripture
and music of the meaning of the symbols
of Christmas in holly, ivy, evergreens,
wreaths, the Christmas tree, the Advent
Wreath, and light.
November will be busy and I expect a won-
derful combination of reflecting on where
we have been, who we are, whose we are,
and where we are being called to go. May
we anticipate and live-into this month with
hope and expectation of God’s Spirit
moving among us!
Blessings,
Rev Carol

Note: On the last page of the UMW yearbook, as well as the inside back cover of the Church Directory, the Prayer Chain is listed. To receive the electronic prayer chain, contact [email protected].
The Sunday School will be collecting from now until Christmas towards
the goal of helping families become more self-reliant. There are so many
opportunities it's hard to choose, but we'd like to help with flocks of
chickens, bunnies, and maybe even a goat or sheep.
So far we have raised $200. There are collection banks in the narthex
during the services. Donations can be made directly
to the children on Sundays, or through the donation
envelopes in the offering; just be sure to mark the
envelope for Heifer project.

COLLECTING NON-EDIBLE ITEMS...
For the seventh consecutive year, United Methodist Women are promoting a drive to collect non-edible items to help fill the shelves at Florence
Food Share. During November there will be a specially marked receptacle in the entry at church for your donations. Suggestions of useful items, not covered with an Oregon Trail Card, include laundry/dish/bar soap, cleaning supplies, paper products, adult/children’s diapers, disposable razors, shampoo and deodorant, even pet food. The entire church family is invited to assist with this outreach in the Florence commu-nity. May God bless the giver! Jean Hefty
UMWomen News

Since I pleaded so hard for Red M & M's, I would like to put in a big thank you to those who helped to make one of my projects a success. I also want to thank Peggy for helping big time on another one of our P.S. projects. There have been many who not only donated for that one, but for many other crafts that were made this year. Thanks to Yola, Mary, and Ursula, for putting together the luncheon. I bet if you talk real sweet to them, they will give you their recipes (do not tell them I said that). My big thanks goes to Renee’ and Yola for doing a great job in having our work shops. GREAT JOB GIRLS! THANKS AGAIN TO ALL who have donated their time to crafting and baking goodies. YUM, YUM! SO PLEASE COME and check it out for your self...and enjoy!!!!!!

Lay Leader Lines
At this Thanksgiving time of year it is very important to me that I express my gratitude that Rev. Carol Thompson is our pastor and leader here at Florence United Methodist Church. I hope that you all have the opportunity to be in a church service that Rev. Carol leads. It is a special, meaningful time. She teaches as she speaks to us. She talks to the kids during “kids’ time” – no matter who the presenter is that day - and really listens to what they have to say. She has introduced some new-to-us ways of being in a worship service, with more new ideas promised for the coming Advent season. As you know, we had an interesting and challenging year before Rev. Carol was ap-pointed to FUMC. I am so grateful she has the experience and knowledge of what a United Methodist Church is. She is willing to teach us how to “get back on the right track” in every sense and to walk with us every step of the way. Encouraging us to use our gifts and talents to be in ministry in the world is every bit as important to her as making sure the budget can be balanced. Because I have had the good for-tune to work with Rev. Carol on the business of the Church, I feel I can say that she considers one of the things that are most important to this church is for each of us to be in ministry in our community and in our daily lives. I appreciate the gentle challenge she gives us to be about the work of Jesus Christ in all that we do. Thank you Rev. Carol Thompson for being here at Florence United Methodist Church. Smiles, Hazel Vacura Lay Leader
