Tear off a piece of freezer paper large enough to fit the template provided with the shade.

Lay the freezer paper shiny side up on a flat surface. Position the shade (adhesive exposed) on the edge of the freezer paper.

Shadows in the ShadeBy Tamara Evans

Floriani Products required:• Floriani Signature Series: Shadow Work • Wet N Gone Tacky stabilizer (roll and/or

printable sheets)• Appli-Kay Wonder tape (½” width)• Floriani threads (as required by designs)• Dream Weave Ultra

Other materials required:• Sheer fabric to fit shade (such as batiste,

organza, organdy, voile, georgette, silk, & light weight rayon)

• Self-adhesive lampshade • Freezer Paper• Water soluble pen/marker (Pilot FriXion ball

is a good choice)• 4” x 4” embroidery hoop

Step 1 – Create a paper template For best results, do not use the “template” provided on the self-adhesive shade; it is rarely a truly accurate representation of the shade. Create your own following these simple steps.

Shadow work embroidery is an ancient textile art. This type of embroidery by hand is not a task for the novice hand-stitcher. Creating the subtle effect of threads shadowing through sheer fabric is a coveted talent requiring extensive practice and precision – until now! Floriani Shadow Work embraces the artistic tradition, without the skill required to hand sew these designs.

Press the shade fabric. Press the freezer paper template to the fabric. Trace the outline of the template onto the fabric with a removable marker.

Position the Wet N Gone Tacky templates on the fabric using the drawn template as a guide. Remove the freezer paper from the back of the fabric.

Step 3 – Embroider the designs

Hoop Wet N Gone Tacky stabilizer in a 4” x 4” hoop. Score the paper and remove, revealing the sticky side of the stabilizer.

Cover the shade with the freezer paper, smoothing it in place as you proceed.

Once the entire shade is covered, trim the excess paper away from the top and bottom edges. Finger press creases along the edges of the shade. Then, run a highlighter down the sides to delineate the edges as shown.

Trim the overlapped edges to ½” past the overlapping fold. Remove the template from the shade. Mark the top and bottom edges, and the fold lines with a dark pen or Sharpie so they are visible.

Step 2 – Prepare the fabric

Stitch the background colors of the design. (See the embroidery instructions as a guide.)

Position the corresponding portion of the fabric over the background designs. Match the template with the background design for proper positioning of the fabric. A light box or window will help align the template with the background fabric.

Note – the design will stitch properly, and trap the background stitching, regardless of the placement since both the background and foreground start in the center of the hoop. However, to get the design placed appropriately on the shade fabric, align the template with the background.

Stitch the foreground colors of the design. A topper is not required since the template is Wet N Gone Tacky and will stay in place during the embroidery.

When the design is complete, remove the fabric from the hoop and gently trim the stabilizer close to the back of the design.

Repeat this process for the three remaining designs.

Step 4 – Prepare the shade fabric Once the embroidery is complete, wash the shade fabric to remove the Wet N Gone Tacky stabilizer. Press the fabric on a towel with a pressing cloth to prevent crushing the embroidery design.

To stabilize the fabric for installation on the shade, fuse Dream Weave Ultra to the back of the pressed fabric per manufacturer’s instructions. This will keep the fabric from stretching out of shape when it is positioned to adhesive shade.

Since all of the shade markings were removed with the washing, use the template to redraw the outlines of the shade on the fabric. (For best results, use a heat or air soluble marking pen, such as Pilot FriXion.)

Using sharp scissors, trim the excess fabric away from the lower edge.

Clip the top fabric to the edge of the frame at the four corners. Fold the fabric to the front of the shade and trim (in the same manner as the lower edge) approximately ⅛” from the top of the frame.

On the remaining raw edge, fuse a ½" strip of Appli-Kay Wonder Tape to the edge of the fabric.

Step 5 – Install the fabric on the shade

Begin with one of the center two designs and adhere the fabric to the adhesive shade. Remove any wrinkles and smooth the fabric working from the center to the raw edges.

When the four sides have been stuck to the shade, turn up the lower edge of the fabric exposing approximately ⅛” of the lower frame edge.

Fold the raw edge under and press along the edge line. Remove the release paper. Position the folded edge in place on the back of the shade. Press lightly with an iron to fuse.

The shade is now ready for the final trim.

Measure the lower and upper edges of the shade. Cut two pieces of ¼" ribbon the measured lengths plus 1”. Cut a piece of ½" Appli-Kay Wonder Tape in half. Fuse to the back of the two ribbon pieces. Remove the paper covering the adhesive. Position the ribbon in place on the upper and lower edges overlapping by ½" on the back of the shade. Gently fuse in place with an iron.

Your Shadow Work Shade is now complete. If any residual markings from the Pilot FriXion pen remain, just touch them with a warm iron and they will magically disappear!
