Obituary

Marvin Leon McIver Jr. age 78 formerly of 500 Dudley Street, Sanford NC transitioned into eternal rest on Wednes-day, March 11, 2020 at UNC Hospice Home, Pittsboro, NC.

Marvin was born June 20, 1941 to the late Marvin McIver, Sr. and Therecie McMillian McIver. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma McIver and his second wife, Darlene Beasley McIver.

Following graduation from W. B. Wicker School, Marvin joined the US Army in 1959 and served during the Vietnam war. He received many distinguished awards while serving his tours of duty in Germany and numerous army bases in the States. Marvin proudly served his country for 16 years. After his discharge from the Army, he attended Central Carolina Technical College and earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree in 1984. He worked various construction jobs.

Leon, as he was called by his family, was saved at an early age and attended Fair Promise A.M.E. Zion Church. Leon’s mode of transportation in his later years was his scooter and it was nothing strange to look up and see him at his church’s bible study on Wednesdays or the Breadbasket at noon. You could say Leon took his “community watch” very seriously as you were bound to see him making his rounds through the town. He also believed in “giving back” to schools by participating in the NC Educational Lottery as a dedicated contributor.

Marvin leaves to cherish his memories two sisters, Brenda McIver Barnes (Henaro) of Sanford, NC and Sarah McIver Stackhouse of Raleigh, NC; two special nephews Darryl and Cyrus Barnes; four Aunts, Remonia Spinks, Pastor Pearline McMillian, Dorothy Pettiford, Pastor Alice McMillian; special cousins, Vincent Fisher McMillian and Dorathy Dowdy; a bonus daughter, Venita McGilvery, four grand-children, Jaiyda, Jameire, Jaevien, and Jaryon. He also leaves a host of cousins and friends that will always remember him as their “gentle giant”.
