Floor coveringis a term to generically describe any finishmaterial applied over a floor structure to provide a walking

surface. Flooring is the general term for a permanentcovering of a floor, or for the work of installing such a floor

    covering.

Materials almost always classified as floor covering include

carpet, area rugs, and resilient flooring such as linoleum orvinyl flooring. Materials commonly called flooring include wood

flooring, ceramic tile, stone, terrazzo, and various seamlesschemical floor coatings.

The choice of material for floor covering is affected by factorssuch as cost, endurance, noise insulation, comfort and

    cleaning effort.

    Tiling a Floor

Use only floor tiles when tiling afloor. There is a difference. Floor

and wall tiles may look similar, butfloor tiles are generally thicker andare textured to make them safer to

walk on. Larger floor tiles will notsafely adhere to walls.

  • 7/31/2019 Flooring 2

    7/44

Preparing Floors for TileThe original flooring material should be

removed before you install your new tile sincethe new tile installation is only as good as theunderlying floor.

The subfloor must be sound enough to supporttile.

Subfloors under tile should be no less than 1"thick.

Tile can be heavy and must be installed on aflat, rigid surface. A flexing floor will causecracks to show up in the grout later and maycause tiles to break.

If floor "bounces" when walking over it,addrigidity by renailing the subfloor to the floorjoists.

    Installing Tile on a Floor

Begin laying the tile from the center of thefloor where the two final reference lines cross.

Start by laying a tile at the intersection of the

lines, then use the lines as a guide as yourway outward toward the walls in eachquadrant.

Spread the adhesive with the trowel's notchededge, combing it

    out in beaded ridges.

Spaces between ridges of adhesive should be

    almost bare.

Marble is available in a selection of finishes offering a highly durableand attractive flooring surface for almost any application. Polished

marble is very well suited for a formal setting such as an entrance hall, dining room or reception. A white marble such as Bianca Carrara will go

very well in a bathroom. If a softer less formal look is required honedmarble can be very effective.

PolishedAs the name indicates the marble is given a highly polished surface. This, in the correct situation is fabulous but remember that it can show

    minute scratches over time

HonedThis is the stage prior to a polished surface and has a matt

appearance. Often used for flooring as it is often considered easier tomaintain.

    Glass floor

A glass floor allows light to pass reducing the need for

artificial lighting and providing a natural source ofdaylight.

The introduction of light through the core of a building

can transform what might otherwise be a dull

claustrophobic interior. With the changing arc of the sun the effects of the light

can add a welcome dimension to the interior.

Glass can be used as a floor panel or stair tread and

    even provide fire protection.

Light passes through a GlassWalk floor, so more

natural light reaches the space underneath--an

    important consideration for walkways.
