Floorcloths are handmade, painted canvas rugs that provide a beautiful, durable and practical alternative to area rugs. They can be customized by size, shape, color and style to enhance any home décor. Our floorcloths also feature hypo allergenic easy-to-clean materials, are fade resistant and will last for decades.
This catalog contains many examples of floorcloths produced by Gracewood Design. Our Early American Collection offers a vast array of floorcloths based on authentic floor patterns found in historic New England homes, circa 1740 – 1840. Our Next Collection is inspired by a variety of influences including Indonesian batik, Art Deco, Arts & Crafts and Victorian motifs as well as contemporary designs based on geometric shapes and patterns. We also include many custom floorcloths inspired by these designs that have been tailored to fit client size, color and style requirements. Our portfolio of designs is both sourced and created in house, and is ever expanding. Each floorcloth description includes color and size information. We generally use Benjamin Moore paints for the background colors and both Jo Sonja stencil paints and Benjamin Moore paints for border and motif colors. All designs in this catalog can be reproduced in different color combinations and most can be translated into different sizes.
Our website, www.gracewooddesign.com, contains many additional examples of our work.
Floorcloth Collections
Early American Collection
The floorcloths in the Early American Collection are based on patterns found painted on floors in historic New England homes. These patterns were chronicled by Esther Stevens Brazer, an avid researcher of 19th century decorative designs.
These designs are the finest examples of early American folk art representing many different elements including lacy floral borders, lovely medallions and a variety of geometric designs. Depending on the colors used, they suit a range of styles appropriate for traditional to modern interiors.
This collection is organized based on the house name (if known) or town where the pattern was originally found, and each floorcloth inspired by the house design(s) is given a number. This collection is intended to convey the style variations that can be achieved by these designs through pattern combination and color use.

“Leaded Glass” Restored Craftsman, Portland, Oregon
This collection represents new work inspired by a variety of sources and themes.
Our Batik Series is based largely on the Rudolf G. Smend Batik Collection which is comprised primarily of textiles produced between 1880 and 1930 in Java, Indonesia. The choice of colors and the marriage of geometric and floral motifs provide the inspiration for this series.
The Victorian/Arts & Craft/Deco Series is primarily based on the work of Alfred Rasmussen, a stencil artist who worked in the Boston area from 1900 - 1940.
Our Contemporary/Geometric Series explores the ability to produce three dimensional effects and is inspired by geometric shapes and repeating patterns.

This floorcloth was commissioned by the Eugene Field House & St. Louis Toy Museum. The pattern was sketched by noted historian, William Seale, as part of renovation recommendations for the museum. From the sketch, shown on the top right, we designed stencils and then made several samples to perfect the combination of colors. The floorcloth measures 5’ 10” at the entry and is 32’ long. This floorcloth is installed wall-to-wall.

“Hay House”National Historic Landmark, Macon, Georgia
This floorcloth was commissioned by the Georgia Historic Trust which owns the Hay House. The pattern is our interpretation of the original dining room floor covering dating back to about 1870, a remnant of which is shown on the top right. The floorcloth is installed wall-to-wall in the 1300+ SF dining room and is constructed from five 10’ x 30’ panels. The background color is Black Beauty and the pattern colors are Burnt Sienna, Black, and custom mixes of red, ochre and two golds.
