Do you know the difference between deduction and inference? To fully understand a text, you need to be

practised at using both of these skills.

We can learn a lot about a character by using the skills of deduction and inference.

Deduction: the ability to draw conclusions based on the information given in the text.

Inference:an interpretation that goes beyond the information given in the text. The reader uses their personal experience, knowledge or opinion to draw conclusions.

Being able to 'infer' is also referred to as 'reading between the lines'.

What do you think this means?

'Reading between the lines' means that the reader uses the information given in the text in order to arrive at another piece of information which

is not directly expressed in the text, only suggested or hinted at.

The sun was high in the sky and beating down mercilessly. "Maybe you should put some suncream on, Joe," said a concerned Alice.

What can we deduce from the text below? What can we infer?

The sun was high in the sky and beating down mercilessly. "Maybe you should put some suncream on, Joe," said a concerned Alice.

We could infer that Alice seems like a caring person as she doesn't want Joe to get

sunburn, and the word 'concerned' is used.

We can deduce that it is a hot day as the sun is

'beating down' and suncream is mentioned.

Why might an author want you to deduce and infer from the information they

give in the text?

By not telling the reader everything explicitly, it helps to involve them in the text and keep them hooked - the reader makes their

own deductions and inferences about characters and what might happen, and keeps reading to see if they are correct.

Can you think of a book that you have read where this has happened?

Let's use our skills of deduction and inference to explore the

character of Zoe. We are going to look at her words, thoughts and

actions.

Most of the people left on Norwich hung around together in groups, but [Zoe] preferred to be on her own. It was safer that way, because you never knew whom you could trust.

Most of the people left on Norwich hung around together in groups, but [Zoe] preferred to be on her own. It was safer that way, because you never knew whom you could trust.

We can deduce that Zoe is a loner, and is hesitant to rely on others. This could lead us to infer that she has been let down by someone in the past,

and so is wary of trusting anyone again.

She saw her dad hesitate. She had never seen that before; he always seemed to know what to do. She could see him torn between getting in the boat with his sick wife, or putting his daughter in with her. She decided to help her dad; to make the decision for him. "You go with Mum; she needs you," she yelled.

She could see him torn between getting in the boat with his sick wife, or putting his daughter in with her. She decided to help her dad; to make the decision for him. "You go with Mum; she needs you," she yelled.

This shows that Zoe is well aware of her dad's feelings, and can't bear to see him suffer. She wants to make it easier for him; she is

selfless, putting the needs of those she loves before herself.

''Stinking water rat, isn't she?'' added Molly, looking at Zoe. Again, Zoe just smiled. If she couldn't get away for a while, her only chance was to be accepted on the island.

Zoe's lack of reaction to Molly's insult shows that she is able to keep her temper. She is aware that her actions

will have consequences.

"No!" said Zoe aloud. "They're okay. I know it." She told herself that seeing the pendant was a good thing, she wouldn't believe otherwise. But she had to find her parents, and to do that she had to get off this stinking little island.

Zoe is trying to stay positive in her beliefs that her parents are alive. She is determined to escape from the island and

find them. She will not give up.

She knew she'd never be able to get him into trouble. And she hated herself for even trying to threaten Munchkin. She would be just as bad as everyone else if she started that kind of thing.

She knew she'd never be able to get him into trouble. And she hated herself for even trying to threaten Munchkin. She would be just as bad as everyone else if she started that kind of thing.

This shows that Zoe has a conscience - she clearly knows right from wrong. She sees herself as morally

superior to the others on the island.

In spite of everything he'd done, Zoe couldn't hate Dooby completely ... they had all had to grow up fast, and something had been taken from them. Looking at Dooby's photograph, she wondered if, like herself, he was just a child who wanted his mum and dad back.

This shows that Zoe is a compassionate person. Even though she knows some of the horrible things that Dooby has done,

she still tries to understand and empathise with him.

Zoe gazed at Munchkin, at her parents, and at baby William. And as she looked at her family, she realised that it had grown. There were five of them now. Yes, she thought, five.

Zoe gazed at Munchkin, at her parents, and at baby William. And as she looked at her family, she realised that it had grown. There were five of them now. Yes, she thought, five.

We can infer from this that Zoe has forgiven her parents for leaving her, and has accepted both

Munchkin and the new baby as part of her family.
