What was Bangladesh like.• Bangladesh is one of the world's most densely populated
countries, with its people crammed into a delta of rivers that empties into the Bay of Bengal.
• Full name: People's Republic of Bangladesh • Population: 164.4 million (UN, 2010) • Capital and largest city: Dhaka • Area: 143,998 sq km (55,598 sq miles) • Major language: Bengali • Major religions: Islam, Hinduism • Life expectancy: 69 years (men), 70 years (women) (UN)
Why?
Causes of floodingHuman Physical (Natural)
Increasing population means deforestation in the foothills of the Himalayas.
80% of the land area is a floodplain
Deforestation has led to soil erosion which means the river channels get silted up and carry less water.
Bangladesh is very low lying and has a monsoon climate.
Weight of population is creating subsidence which makes the land more prone to flooding.
Two major rivers bring lots of water into Bangladesh. The Ganges and Brahmaputra.
Bangladesh is an LEDC and has little money to spend on flood protection as much gets spent of foreign debt.
In spring melting snow water from the Himalayas increases water levels.
What impact did the flooding have
POSITIVE EFFECTS OF FLOODING• Water for crops• Deposition of rich fertile soil.•Ganges delta
EFFECTS OF THE 1998 FLOODS:• 2 thirds of the land are a covered by water. The capital Dhaka was 2m underwater. •30 million people were made homeless in the floods with many losing all their belongings.
•1,070 people died •Contamination of water by waste and dead bodies / animals, and the lack of a clean water supply resulted in the spread of disease such as cholera and typhoid. •Further deaths from snake bites and other injuries which led to death through the lack of access to medical care. •Food supplies damaged as rice stocks and crops destroyed by flood water.•Major roads and railways were swept away.
• $7 Billion • 1070 killed• Children can’t get to school.• ??• ??
