The rooms were still very nicely decorated after Xmas and there was a lovely fire blazing in the barroom. Things got going about 9.00pm although the premises were open much earlier. Gra- ham Kirby-Jones provided music from his extensive collection creating a happy at- mosphere and prompting some dancing. Member of the committee and the Stew- ard combined efforts to provide an ample supply of finger food. On the stroke of midnight everyone in the bar took part in the traditional singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and there were hugs and handshakes all round. Then up to the club garden for a splendid display of fire- works sponsored by Patsy Young, profes- sionally set off by Richard Gray having been fetched all the way from the factory up north by Terry and Sue Allen. Our sin- cere thanks to all of them. All agreed that the evening was a suc- cess and a very happy and convivial oc- casion, always something we all look forward to. A Messagefrom Jane Gardener

Dear Residents of Flitcham,A very Happy New Year from everyone

here at the school! All the children havecome back to school raring to go after alovely Christmas break and a hugely busyAutumn term. We really enjoyed takingpart in the village carol service and lookforward to more combined events. The start of this term saw the traditionalNew Year’s party, with children enjoyinga special treat on Friday afternoon of tra-ditional party games, such as Pass the Par-cel, plenty of party food and music. Muchfun was had by all, including the staff.Later in January we have a visiting dramagroup, who will be performing Dick Whit-tington, which looks set to be a wonderfulperformance.

One of my reasons for writing was tointroduce myself as the new ExecutiveHeadteacher, I work across the twoschools Sandringham and West Newtonand Flitcham, spending half my time ineach school. Having moved to Norfolk 18months ago from Buckinghamshire, I canhonestly say living and working in thiswonderful area is a real dream come true, having spent much of my childhood uphere, visiting my aunt.

The school is very much at the heart ofthe community and as such I would like toappeal to you. The children can really ben-efit from working with volunteers. I haveno doubt that many of you have skills toshare and we would be really happy towelcome you into school. Reading withchildren, gardening, sewing, arts andcrafts, music, cooking, really any skillsthat you would like to share; we wouldlove to hear from you.

The Storytelling EveningA cozy, warm and very pleasant evening

was enjoyed by the group who came tojoin the fun. The room was quite atmos-pheric, lit only by a host of candles andtwinkling Christmas lights. It proved anideal setting for the circle of people of allages who had come along. There werereadings of well loved poems and extractsfrom seasonal stories, some serious someamusing. Even the very well behaved fiveyear old enjoyed it so much she wanted tocome back the next evening for more.

An original humorous poem from Deb-bie bemoaning the moles in their gardenwas much appreciated as was the christ-mas music played by Dawn on her accor-dion. Don gave us Dylan Thomas’ “FernHill” followed by two of his own sensitiveand thought provoking poems. Robert,Joey, Harry, Patsy and Roger all read or re-cited enjoyable pieces. The wine and warmmince pies went down well during thecourse of the evening and while peoplechatted happily before heading home. Weare wondering now if we could do a simi-lar evening around Midsummers Eve.Why not? Thanks to all who came alongto take part.

Parish CouncilThe Parish Council met on Tuesday 3rd

January 2017. Monica Mortensson at-tended for her first meeting as a Councilorfollowing her co-option last Novemberand we welcomed Dawn Nash who wasco-opted at this meeting, thank you to youboth for answering a call for new Coun-cilors. We now have 6 on the team but weshould have 7 so we would love anotherParishioner to come along. The normalroutine is that we meet on the first Tues-day of every other month so only 6 meet-ings a year, not much to commit to. Ournext meeting is in March. In January'smeeting we discussed the precept andagreed the expenditure for the comingyear. Parishioner Harry Verney attendedthe meeting to discuss the contribution theParish makes to the Church in the villageto assist with the grass cutting. Due toother expenses the donation given thisyear of £100.00 could not be increased. The Council was delighted that Jane Gard-ner, Flitcham Executive Head Teacheralso attended the meeting and it is hopedto build a good relationship between theSchool and Flitcham community.

The minutes of the meeting are on theParish Council web site and will be put onthe Parish notice board. JS
