Heels On Wheels In Style!Setting Off

Many experienced cyclists have never taken the time to learn the correct way to mount and dismount and their bad habits can put them at risk when they try to start off in traffic or uphill.

One of the most basic skills of cycling is the ability to ride straight, without wobbling from side to side. Learning the correct starting technique will help you to control your bike without wobble! But first, you need to position your bike correctly on the road.

Bike road placement

1. Look behind you over your right shoulder and make sure the road is clear.

2. Keeping your left hand on the handlebars, lift your bike off the kerb onto the road by placing your right hand under the saddle and positioning the rear wheel on the road.

3. Now lift the front wheel off the kerb onto the road by the handlebars. You are now ready to mount your bike!

Mounting

1. Before getting on your bike, look behind you over your right shoulder to make sure the road is clear.

2. It is helpful to pull your right brake on to stop the bike from moving before you mount.

3. From the kerb, lean the bike to the side slightly towards you and lift your right foot or swing

your leg (depending on the type of bike frame) over the frame.

4. Do not try and sit on the saddle while the bike is stopped as this is not usually possible if your seat is correctly positioned.

5. Rotate the right pedal to the 2 o’clock position with your left foot on the kerb.

6. Cover your brakes with your fingers and look behind over your right shoulder to make sure the road is clear.

7. Now push down hard with your the ball of your right foot. This will simultaneously:

a. Let you use the peddle as a step to lift yourself high enough to get onto the saddle and;

b. Apply driving force to the chain, causing your bike to move forward and pick up speed.

Top style tip!

Popular wisdom may rule out cycling in stilettos on the grounds of practicality, but we propose an alternative theory. The Wedge!

The bigger the wedge heel, the more practical the shoe.

Consider wedges as your own portable shoe platform to banish those wobbly ‘traffic light’ moments when you pull up and can’t reach the kerb with your foot!
