how we’ve helped councilsto go green

Landfill. A word that makes everyone, but particularly Councils, shudder with apprehension. Landfill has, in every sense of the word, become the issue that won’t go away. Which is why local authorities have to use increasingly creative strategies to encourage people to reduce the amount of waste they’re creating. Luckily at Flipside we have a proven track record in doing just this...

There are a lot of issues surrounding recycling. However, one of the largest is ignorance. People just don’t know what they can do to reduce the waste they are creating. So, in conjunction with West Sussex County Council, we created a booklet designed to show them not only what they could do – but how easy it was. In fact, so successful was this booklet that it won an award from WRAP.

To promote this booklet we created posters, bus sides, press and radio ads.

nappiesBabies do three things. They eat, they sleep and well, they create a lot of full nappies. An issue which was quickly becoming a big problem for West Sussex County Council. So how do you get people to cutback on the number of nappies they use? First off – you look at the issues realistically. Parents were never going to stop using disposable nappies in favour of cotton ones overnight. Disposable are far too easy to use and cotton ones are labour intensive.

Our strategy was to encourage Mums and Dads to use cotton ones whenever they could (we even gave them vouchers off their first cotton nappies).

At the same time were making them aware of the real landfill crisis that was facing West Sussex and that they could soon be knee deep in the problem. This ‘push’ ‘pull’ approach worked to great effect.

We rolled the creative out through posters, press ads, radio ads and we created an WRAP award winning booklet to support the campaign.

Anyone with a garden can help reduce the growing mountain of rubbish inWest Sussex by picking up a free Green Cone food waste digester. All food waste, including meat and bones, can be emptied into the Green Cone and broken downinto virtually nothing. It requires a sunny position, and is installed by digging a hole

42cm deep in well draining soil to bury the basket. The end result is far lessrubbish going into your dustbin, and less precious space used for landfill.

compostingComposting had been getting bad press. But this simple, yet highly visual campaign, not only showed you the positive effects of composting – a greener countryside. But it was also supported by an amazing offer of a FREE food waste digester. This campaign used press, poster and radio to get effect and take-up was exceptionally high.
