2) What is the Flipped Classroom?
A) "students gain firstexposure learning prior to class and focus on the processing part of learning (synthesizing, analyzing, problemsolving, etc.) in class" (Brame, 2013)
responsibility and ownership of learning are actively transferred to students(Bergmann & Sams, 2012)
"[shifts] the entire paradigmof teachingaway from a traditional model of teachersas imparters of knowledge andtoward a model of teachers ascoaches who carefully observestudents, identify their learningneeds, and guide them to higherlevels of learning" (Goodwin &Miller, 2013)

Responding to ...Watching Videos (Responding to Challenges)
Student: "Mr. Stewart, I don't have Internet access at home. What should I do?"
Mr. Stewart: "No problem. I have a DVD and a flash drive with several of the required videos on it. Do you happen to have a DVD player and/or laptop to play them?"
and/or "Use the Learning Commons to watch the videos I've posted online."
Mr. Stewart: "I've noticed that you haven't been watching the videos. How can I help you to ..."
Student: <various responses>
Sample: "I've been putting them off ... thought I'd have time over the weekend to get caught up."
Mr. Stewart: "You've shared with me earlier that you understand the importance of watching them in advance. Just remember that the time you spend in class watching the videos will interferewith the time you have to work through the problem sets with your peers and to ask questions of me."
CentresWatching Videos (Responding to Challenges)
In addition to letting students learn at their own pace, invideo quizzing provides a quick snapshot of areas that need more attention across the entire class. With the results from each quiz, you can adjust lesson plans and classroom discussion, group students based on need, and identify necessary oneonone work with students. This information also can be relayed to parents to share specifics about what a student is struggling to process and their homework habits.

Embedding Assessments
Including Parents in the Flip
"Why not let parents know about this? In my video, I provided parents with a link to my blog and Twitter feed. I want parents to see that this is more than just a job to me–it has become a passion."

Inclass Flip
"An InClass Flip works like this. Just like with a traditional flip, the teacher prerecords direct instruction,
say, in a video lecture. But instead of having students view the content at home, that video becomes a
station in class that small groups rotate through. The rest of their time is spent on other activities
independent work and group work, with some activities related to the lesson and others focusing on
different course content. As with a traditional flip, the direct instruction runs on its own, which frees the
teacher for more oneonone time with students."
Jennifer Gonzales, Educator

iii) YouTube Comments (WHO WATCHED? WHAT DID THEY GET OUT OF THE VIDEO?)
• Have students ...>leave a comment>provide an answer to a prompt you've provided at the end of the video
iv) Online Polling (WHO WATCHED? WHAT DID THEY GET OUT OF THE VIDEO?)
• Have students ...>answer a survey to gauge what they got out of the video (post survey links on your course website to the survey)>E.g., SurveyMonkey, Google Forms
v) Clickers (WHO WATCHED? WHAT DID THEY GET OUT OF THE VIDEO? ABLE TO EXTEND?)
• Have your students ...>respond to an electronic quiz with the use of clickers>review responses as a class

vi) Bell Work Task (WHO WATCHED? WHAT DID THEY LEARN?)
• Have students ...>answer a few questions re: learning acquired from the video>describe and share one or two things that they learned from the video
vii) Email Your Teacher (WHO WATCHED? WHAT DID THEY LEARN?)
• Have students ...>describe one or two things they learned from the video (i.e., exit slip)
viii) Online Collaboration (WHO WATCHED? WHAT DID THEY LEARN?)
• Give sharing permissions for students to collaborate on a Google Drive document>forum to ask questions and receive feedback from peers>share ideas>make connections to other students' comments
