TTeeaacchhiinngg TTiippss:: Look & Flip Writing Cards
These pages can be printed on printed on paper or card. A great idea is to print them on card, laminate them and then have your students trace the letters with whiteboard markers.
Store them in a folder or file in groups of 20 cards – one file for each level of words.
Markers are great for children to first learn to write, as little pressure has to be exerted to achieve a good solid line. Children also find it fun to use markers and will be more likely to have a few turns.
Before you give these pages to your students, show them how to recognise the different shapes for different sized letters.
These activity cards have been designed to be used as part of a writing, spelling or sight words reading program.
They would be best used after direct teaching of the words.
These cards (once laminated) make an effective small group activity for your literacy group rotation. Use the instruction sheet provided to give to an adult supervising the students. You could choose a small selection of focus words for children to write, rather than giving them the whole set.
Print the word cards on one side of your card, flip the page in your printer and then print the second side. This will give your students the ability to flip the card, look at the correct spelling of the word and try to correctly write it. Alternatively, just print the one side and have a list of words on display in the classroom and encourage students to find a word from the list that will fit in the boxes on the word card.
Teach the children to hold the card with the sun in the top right corner. In my classroom, we call this the “starting star” position, and it is the place that our eyes go to first when we start reading and writing. This will help them to make sure they are holding the card the right way up!

TTeeaacchhiinngg TTiippss:: 100 Sight Words
There are 100 words included in our 100 Sight Words program.
Level 1 sight words are: a, and, be, I, in, is, it, of, that, the, to, was, all, as, are, at, but, for, he, her
Level 2 sight words are: had, have, his, not, on, one, said, so, they, we, with, you, an, by, do, go, if, me, my, no
Level 3 sight words are: up, or, big, can, did, get, has, him, new, now, off, old, our, out, see, she, two, who, back, been
Level 4 sight words are: came, down, from, into, just, like, made, much, over, them, this, well, went, when, call, come, here, make, must, only
Level 5 sight words are: some, then, were, what, will, your, about, before, could, first, little, look, more, other, right, their, there, want, where, which
These are one hundred of the most common words of all reading. We have split them into groups of twenty, for ease of teaching and learning.
Most sight words are phonetically irregular. Children need to learn them by sight.
Fast recognition of sight words will promote fluency in reading. Repeated exposure to the words will assist this fast recognition. Playing lots of different games, and doing regular class drills will make this repeated exposure more effective and motivating for your students.
As students are introduced to new sight words, you should encourage them to see them, say them, and spell them. If we involve more senses in acquiring knowledge, we are better able to retain and recall that knowledge.
If you need assistance in teaching and programming for sight word learning, we produce a great document called Sight Words Teacher Resource Book.

IInnssttrruuccttiioonnss:: Writing Cards
Equipment:
20 word-box cards Whiteboard markers (not included) Whiteboard erasers (not included)
Purpose: Students will recognise the letter box shapes for sight words Students will remember the spelling of sight words
What to do:
Students sit at a table, and each have a whiteboard marker and eraser. Students are told the number of cards that the teacher would like them to complete. The purpose of this activity is to help children write sight words with correct spelling. The letter box shapes give them some help and guide their response. Please ensure that children are not rushing, and that they take their time to practice neat and carefully formed letters. Children take a letter card and a whiteboard marker. They flip their card, read the sight word and say the letters. They then flip their card back and have a go at spelling the word in the letter shape boxes. You may like to have the words displayed somewhere in the classroom for self correction. Once the words have been written correctly, they can clean the board with an eraser and get another card.
