‘Great War Exhibition’ Visit on 14th Oct

A quick reminder please. If you change physical address, phone number or your email address. PLEASE LET THE BRANCH KNOW! Please contact our Secretary (Margaret) at: [email protected]

Change of Address and Email

As was mentioned in the last meeting, the Branch is planning a visit to the ’Great War Exhibition’ at the old Museum at 1:30pm on the 14th Oct. And at the last meeting a fair few of you put your hands up as being interesting in joining in this visit. The normal charge to enter is: $15 to the Main Exhibition. Or $40 for ‘The Quinn’s Post Trench Experience Combo’. The Branch will subsidise this visit (to members only) to the tune of $20 per head for the ‘Trench Experience Combo’. Other non-members may join us when we do the visit, however they will need to pay the full price. Anyone wanting to join us on this visit must sign up at our September meeting, and pay your $20 to reserve your place.

Note that the next Range Day for the branch will be the

16th September.

This will be a Practice Day

Firearms Licence Numbers

New Online Firearms Tests

Christmas Lunch—11th Nov

Andrew recently attended a meeting at Police National Headquarters. Aside from the business discussions they were given some interesting statistics on NZ firearms licenses. Here’s how the numbers stack up: Total current firearm licence holders 246,526 Total licences with firearm endorsements 9,976, (many licence holders have multiple endorsements). Broken down by endorsement we have: B cat 4289 C cat 4147 E cat 7375 Dealers 490 ish. That is a lot of people owning and using MSSA type firearms, which certainly gives clear validation of MSSA’s within the firearms community (as if there was any doubt). There are also a lot of collectors (including heirloom licences). So, where are they all? Get them looking at this newsletter and bring them into our meetings!

With the AA now doing the Firearms Theory testing, the question was asked if there were any practice tests available for new applicants. The good news is that the Police have included some sample modules within their web site. These should help to give you an idea of the type of questions you can expect to face on the day. Also, this is a good opportunity for us old dogs to do a little revision and see if we really are as clever as we may think we are. The other obvious thing to study is the Arms Code, this is a vital document and it contains some great practical safety advice. It’s worth keeping a copy on hand for reference. Follow the link below and test yourself! (Note: there were 3 x separate 10 question tests available to try) http://www.police.govt.nz/…/firea…/firearms-safety-elearning

This is advance notice of the November meetings.

There will be NO meeting on the first Sunday of November!

The November meeting will be the

This is the day that the cream of your displays come out.

This date is also the 100 year Anniversary of Armistice Day,

Fairbairn–Sykes Fighting Knives

The Shanghai knife on which The F-S was based was only about 5.5 in (14 cm) long in the blade.

First pattern knives have a 6.5 in (17 cm) blade with a flat area, or ricasso, at the top of the blade which was not present on the original design (and the presence of which has not been explained by the manufacturers). Note the S-shaped crossguard.

Second-pattern knives have a slightly longer blade (just less than 7” (18 cm)), 2 in (5.1 cm), a wide oval crossguard, knurled pattern grip, and rounded ball, and may be stamped "ENGLAND" (a US legal requirement when importing the surplus knives after WWII, as they had to show the country of origin) on the handle side of the cross guard. Some may also be stamped with a "Broad Arrow" /|\ British issue mark and a number (e.g., 21) on the opposite handle side of the cross guard.

Third-pattern knives also have a similarly sized seven-inch blade, but the handle was redesigned to be a ringed grip. This ringed grip is reputed to have distressed one of the original designers as it unbalanced the weapon and made harder to hold when wet, but it was used by the manufacturers as it was simple to produce and could be cast from a cheaper and more plentiful alloy instead of using up scarce quantities of brass stock which were, of course, required for ammunition casings and other such vital applications.

William Rodgers, as part of the Egginton Group, now also produce an all-black "sterile" version of the knife, which is devoid of any markings showing maker for NATO use.

Many people admire the Fairbairn-Sykes (F-S)fighting knives, but how many know what their history is, or what types are out there? Firstly, there were two designers: William Ewart Fairbairn ( 28 Feb1885 – 20 June 1960) He was a British Royal Marine

and police officer. He developed hand-to-hand combat methods for the Shanghai Police during the interwar period, as well as for the allied special forces during WW2. He created his own fighting system known as Defendu.

Notably, this included innovative pistol shooting techniques and the development of the F-S Fighting Knife Eric Anthony Sykes (5 Feb 1883– 12 May 1945), (born Eric Anthony Schwabe) Born in Barton-upon-Irwell, in England. He was a soldier and firearms expert. He is most famous for his work with Fairbairn in the

development of the F-S Fighting Knife and mod-ern British Close Quar-ters Battle (CQB) martial arts during World War II. Originally working for an import/export company selling weapons in East Asia, he claimed he

volunteered for and served in the British Army as a sharpshooter on the Western Front during World War I. Returning to China in 1917, he joined the volunteer branch of the Shanghai Municipal Police (SMP) Specials with the rank of Inspector in 1926. Together these two men also wrote the book ‘Shooting to Live’

The Wagon Box Fight

On August 2, 1867. THE WAGON BOX FIGHT occurred near Fort Phil Kearny (in present day Wyoming.) Around 7:30am Red Cloud and Crazy Horse led 1,000 Sioux against Captain

J.W. Powell's 26 infantrymen and six woodcutters. Powell and his men circled their 15 wagons and from this defensive position they repulsed three Indian charges.

The breech loading Allin breech loading conversion rifles that Powell's men had were a distinct advantage over the muzzle loaders Red Cloud believed the army were using.

(The Springfield Model 1866 was the second iteration of the Allin-designed trapdoor breech-loading mechanism. Originally developed as a means of converting rifled muskets to breech-loaders. The Allin modification later became the basis for the Model 1873, the first breech-loading rifle adopted by the US War Department for widespread issue to U.S. troops.) Around 1PM the Indians at last fell back into the hills, when the fort's howitzer was heard in the distance, and Maj. Benjamin Smith approached with a relief force of 100 men. Powell lost only seven men, and three were wounded. Official army estimates counted 60 Indians killed and 120 wounded. Red Cloud said that he lost the" flower of his fighting youth" that day.
