Graduation is a very special time for seniors and their families. To celebrate as a community, our school hosts a number of events to honor the Class of 2017. In an effort to assist you during this busy time, we have outlined the upcoming senior activities and deadlines. Students will receive much of this information via homeroom bulletins and public address announcements in the coming months, so please encourage them to listen to all announcements.
In this publication, you will find a schedule of specific events with comments to assist you in planning. All of these are indicated on the “Important Dates” page in this mailing. Behavior and attire should reflect the nature of each event. Please save this flier for reference until graduation.
In addition, under May Celebrations for Seniors, you will find a letter from Starr Saunders detailing ticket sales and arrangements for our Senior Ball and Grad Night activities.
If you have any questions about graduation, please contact Ms. Starr Saunders, Director of Student Activities ([email protected]).

You will receive an email with instructions to confirm the spelling of your graduate’s name for the diploma during the third week in January. Responding will ensure your student’s name is written and spelled as you wish on the diploma. If you do not receive this email, contact Candy Promes ([email protected]). Diplomas will be available for pickup after graduation in the main office beginning June 5, 2017.
The Senior Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bishop O'Dowd High School large gym. This evening is designed to honor and recognize members of the 2017 Senior Class for outstanding achievement in academics, service, and campus life. If a student is receiving an award, he/she and his/her parents will receive an email invitation. Not every senior will receive an award, but every senior and his/her parents are welcome to attend.
In preparation for the Senior Awards evening, we invite you to submit photocopies of academic and athletic awards and scholarships received from the colleges to which your student has applied. (Please, no phone or camera pictures of documents!) All scholarship information received will be published in both the senior awards and graduation programs. In order to comply with publishing deadlines, award submissions must be received by Monday, April 24, 2017. If your student receives awards after 4/24, please continue to submit copies, but we can’t guarantee publication.
Time limitations preclude us from announcing all awards published in the program. We do not recognize awards from commercial publishers (organizations that require students to pay for the award).
Send award submissions to: Candy Promes, Academic Coordinator 9500 Stearns Ave., Oakland, CA 94605 510-553-8622 Ph 510-638-3259 Fax [email protected]
The Baccalaureate Mass is a time for students, parents, faculty and staff to celebrate with the Class of 2016. This liturgy begins at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 2 in our high school gymnasium where we have held our school liturgies with the Class of 2017 for four years. Students are to wear graduation gowns (no caps).
A reception will follow the Mass on the Quad.

The second activity is called Magical Grad Night at California’s Great America!
O’Dowd seniors will travel by bus on Thursday, May 25th, departing campus at 7:00 p.m., and returning on Friday, May 26th, at 3:00 a.m. (No school for Seniors on Friday May 27th.) California’s Great America has a STRICT “no smoking, no drinking, no drugs” policy, as well as a dress code (similar to O’Dowd’ s) for all participants. It’s a very safe night party that O’Dowd seniors are sure to enjoy. Tickets for this year’s Grad Night are $100 each and include trip insurance, exclusive ride use, all-you-can-eat-buffet dinner, two professional DJs mixing in two different areas, Air brush tattoo artist, henna tattoo artist, face painter, caricature artist, private use of video arcade and more!
Tickets can be purchased (after a cost is established) on the parent portal on our website until May 17. Consider giving a “Grad Night” ticket as a graduation gift to your senior.
