As chairman, it gives me great pleasure to be at the helm of what is the best FREE day out in the North West. We are a small team of volunteers who each have there own ‘jobs’ to do on the committee, and are proud to do so. Last year was our 1st in partnership with a company called LeftCoast who have been given the task of bringing the Arts to the Fylde coast. Those of you who witnessed the parade at 3 o’clock would have been impressed with the hand built vehicles thus keeping with the transport theme. It ended with a display of JCB diggers performing a dance on the beach behind the Marine Hall. This year sees a display performed by ‘Extraordinary Bodies’ whose show is called ‘Weighting’. The performers are both abled bodied and disabled bodied and is a must see for all.The interest in our show this year has exceeded all expectations which is why we chose to close the entries early thus giving us time to sort out the placings of the vehicles and the
stalls. Look out for the MG 6R4 Rally car designed by Patrick Head of the Williams formula 1 team back in 1985 and for the open top bus from Southport and of course the trams. We have got 3 on display by the Pharos lighthouse. Blackpool Transport will be running 10 Heritage Trams to Fleetwood throughout the day, so Tram Sunday will this year live up to its name once again. A twitter wall, live animals, dinosaurs, car clubs and buses will all make this a fabulous day out for all the family.
Enjoy the day
Special thanks to Chris Allen Garages, Wyre Council, Freeport Fleetwood, LeftCoast, Arts Council England, Without Walls, Associated British Ports, Blackpool Transport Services, Asda and all our associated partners.

Balloon car 706. Green and Cream Open topped Double Decker. Named “Princess Alice”. (Weather dependent )
The backbone of the fleet from their introduction in the mid 1930’s until the new era of the LRV ( Light Rail Vehicle) tramway in 2012, Balloons (as the double decker streamlined trams became known) were actually delivered in two formats. 700 to 712 were originally bought as open toppers as seen in 706. 713-726 were delivered as closed toppers, but during the war years, the open cars were covered over. In 1980 however, 706 met 705 in a quite serious collision at Pleasure Beach. The two damaged cars sat for several years in the bus yard, until at a committee meeting of the forthcoming Centenary Celebrations to be held in 1985, a member of that committee suggested that perhaps could the good end of one be put on the bad end of the other and then a restored open topped Balloon could once again be seen on the Blackpool Tramway. The result you can hopefully see here today. Incidentally that committee member, is also now a member of this Festival committee too.
VISITING HERITAGE TRAMCARS Service is every 20 minutes from ASH STREET to PLEASURE BEACH.
Standard Tram No 147. Green and Cream Enclosed Double Decker Tramcar. Named “Michael Airey”.Built in 1924 to the same design as many created by the transport department at Blackpool, but in this case by Hurst Nelson of Motherwell.
147 left the UK in 1967 bound for America, but was never fully used at the museum she went to. In 2000, she was returned home in two halves and was fully restored. She was named Michael Airey in honour of the body shop manager that worked so hard to get this tram back and have her returned to service.

Boat Cars 600, 227, 230. Green and Cream, or Red and White Open Topped Single Decker. (Weather Dependent)Built in 1934 as part of a huge upgrade of the Blackpool tram fleet by Walter Luff, the then General Manager, these were a summer variant of the more usual closed saloon “Railcoaches”. These are the three that now survive on the tramway and always prove very popular on summer days.
The prototype, No. 600 is in it’s original green and cream livery as it was seen on delivery, where as 227 wears a Red & White livery that was Blackpool’s livery for vehicles up to 1933. 230 is also Green & Cream but in the 1970’s style and is named “George Formby” on the side.Being the prototype, No. 600 also slightly differs from the others by having shallower side panels and as such has earned the nickname of “Little Willie”.
Trailer Motor Tram 272 and Trailer T2. Cream Single Decker Enclosed Tramcar with a Cream Enclosed Trailer attached. In the late 1950’s and early 60’s, tramways were being closed down in large numbers as large capital outlay was required to renew the fleets. However buses seemed the cheaper and more efficient alternative then So in a bid to keep Blackpool’s trams viable, a look across at the way the Europeans did things was looked at. One way of increasing capacity was adding a tram to the back of a normal one. So between 1958 and 62, some of the older “Railcoaches” were rebuilt as Trailer Motor cars and some new trailers were built to be attached to them. The result is 272 and T2, recently repainted into her original overall cream livery.
OTHER POTENTIALLY OPERATIONAL CARS. This list is of trams from the operational heritage fleet from which a “changeover” of vehicles may be used on the day. Also within this list will be a number of trams that may be used as “static exhibits” on the day, as part of the “Spare Parts” arts festival that runs in conjunction with the Transport Festival event.Brush “Railcoach” 631. Green and Cream Single Decker Enclosed Tramcar.Again dating from the upgrade in the mid 1930’s that helped the tramway survive, car 631 is one of a few to survive the upgrade and is shown in the more recent version of her livery. This is similar to the type of tram that the Trailers were rebuilt from as well as the One Man Operated or OMO cars that were rebuilt in the 1970’s and which almost certainly ensured the tramway survived into modern times.
Centenary Class Tramcars 642 or 648. Yellow or Green & Cream Single Decker Enclosed Tramcars. These trams were built using bus technology and parts for ease of exchange and better costings by East Lancs Coachbuilders of Blackburn between 1984 and 1988. They replaced the OMO cars that were life expired, but still being One Person Operated, they were cheaper to operate and mostly maintained the less frequent Winter services. They were christened “Centenary” class as they arrived at around the centenary year of the tramway in 1985. 648 was originally numbered 651 as an experiment for GEC to test out new equipment and at the end of the experiment was renumbered 648 and entered normal service in 1990. 648 has been restored back to her 1988 appearance.
13
“Coronation” Tramcars 304 or 660. Cream Single Decker Enclosed Tramcar. In 1952 an order for 25 new trams was made from Charles Roberts of Wakefield. These were the so called “Coronations”, as they arrived mostly within the Coronation year of Queen Elizabeth the Second in 1953. However, whilst being extremely luxurious and stylish, they were very heavy and started to damage the tracks. Additionally they also had braking problems, though this was later put down to the tramways department removing sets of batteries on each one to try to make them lighter and less harmful to the tracks. So by trying to solve one problem, they created another. They didn’t last too long in service and by the 1970’s had mostly been withdrawn. Only three now survive, two of which are now operational. 304, the prototype, was the subject of a Channel Four “Salvage Squad” programme to see it be brought back to life.
“B FLEET” Double Decker Enclosed Tramcars in Blackpool Council Purple & White Flexity livery. 700, 711 or 719.With the advent in 2012 of the new upgraded tramway with it’s brand new fleet of 16 Bombardier “ Flexity 2 “ type tramcars, it was felt that from time to time when demand grew, such as at half term and/or during the famous Illuminations, that the Flexity fleet might not always be able to cope. Therefore a programme of rebuilding some of the spare 1930’s Balloons was commenced. In total some 9 cars were earmarked for conversion which mostly involved fitting a different type of “plug fit” doors, to enable them to pick up passengers at the newly constructed LRV style platforms on the upgraded system. Despite their conversion however, the changes, whilst quite dramatic looking, are in fact, very easily removed and so if in future it is deemed desirable to restore any of the three numbered above, then this should not pose too much of a challenge to achieve. That said, with the plug doors, fitting of a pantograph and a new striking livery that mimics the Flexity corporate style, the trams do belie their 80 years of age quite well, it has been said.
STATIC HERITAGE TRAMSBalloon car 715. Green and Cream Double Decker. The backbone of the fleet from their introduction in the mid 1930’s until the new era of the LRV ( Light Rail Vehicle) tramway in 2012, Balloons (as the double decker streamlined trams became known) were actually delivered in two formats. 700 to 712 were originally bought as open toppers as seen in 706. 713-726 were delivered as closed toppers as seen as 715 which has recently returned to the heritage service operational fleet following extensive overhaul. It is finished in 1985 livery which is the year that Tram Sunday first took place and easily recognisable with it’s distinctive Tram Sunday advertising strip between decks.
Bolton Corporation Tramcar No. 66. Maroon & Cream Enclosed Double Decker Tramcar. Now the only survivor of the Bolton Tramways fleet, 66 was built in 1901 by the Electric Railway and Carriage Co. When Bolton, like many towns and cities just after the Second World War, closed down their tramways, 66 like so many others, the lower saloon was sold off for a few pounds and became a caravan. In 1964 she was rescued and over the next couple of decades, she was fully restored by a small band of dedicated tram fans. As a precursor to the upcoming Centenary Celebrations due in 1985, in 1981 she was allowed to be the first “foreign” preserved tram to operate in Blackpool to see if the public would ride on such a tram, which must have been a success, as she has been here ever since. In fact in

around ten years time, 66 will have operated in Blackpool for longer than she ever did in her home town of Bolton.Blackpool & Fleetwood “Box” car No. 40. Brown and Cream Single Decker Enclosed Tramcar. The tramway we see today running continuously from Starr Gate to Fleetwood ferry, was not always as “joined up” as it is today. The Corporation trams started in 1885, but only ran to Cocker Square, but later extended to The Gynn. However, until 1920, should you wish to ride to Fleetwood, it involved a change of not only tram, but type of company too, as the connecting service was run by a private company. The Blackpool & Fleetwood Electric Tramroad Co. Ltd, was opened in 1898 and had depots at Fleetwood and Bispham. It ran around 40 trams and was financially sound. The tramway was an interurban system running mostly through quite lightly populated areas, but had enough larger places on it’s route to continue to be profitable. Box 40 arrived in 1914 to a design very similar to those of the Manx Electric Railway’s trams on the Isle of Man, which also still operate. Upon purchase by Blackpool Corporation in 1920, the two tramways were finally connected at the Gynn, as they still are today. In fact at the Gynn an idiosyncrasy of the two systems once being separate, can still be seen, as the Corporation preferred to have its tram poles at the side of the tracks, where as the Tramroad Co liked to have their traction poles in the middle between the two tracks. Even though all the original poles have been renewed, that practice of a preferred pole position, is still kept alive even today. At the Gynn, if you look along the tramway to Fleetwood, the poles are still between the tracks, whilst look towards Blackpool and the poles are at the side with an arm spanning both tracks.
Why not take a return Tram Tour to North Pier and back on one of the 8 Heritage Trams visiting us today. They will be running at regular intervals from Ash Street, at the southern end of the festival area throughout the whole of the day.
Tram Artwork available at Rally Control - Copies of 5 Norman Daley prints specially commissioned by Blackpool Transport in 1985 to celebrate the centenary of the Tramway and Limited Edition Posters produced in 2010 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the tramway - both items are not available elsewhere. These are offered with the kind permission of Blackpool Transport Services.

PWR RailwayTRAM SUNDAY
Fleetwood - The town that you are currently within and hopefully enjoying this wonderful and unique “Tram Sunday” event in, came in to being mainly because of the vision of it’s founder, Sir Peter Hesketh Fleetwood, to create a new town and port and his belief that it could best succeed if it was served by a railway.
Thus in the July of 1840, the Preston & Wyre Railway was opened to great acclaim and the railway became a great success. This was in no small part due to the fact that, until 1856, no locomotive had been yet built that could conquer the gradients of Shap in the Lake District and so the very popular trip to Scotland could only be achieved by getting first to Fleetwood and then catching a ship to Scotland. This then was the Northern end of the Euston railway line, hence the name of the North Euston Hotel that we still have here to this day.
However in the 1960’s times changed and with it less revenue. In 1970 it was finally closed to passengers by BR and in 1999 it lost it’s freight business too when ICI stopped it’s tanker trains using the line.
It sat “mothballed” until a plan in 2006 to turn it into solely a cycle path, encouraged some local rail orientated individuals to argue that it might be better served as a railway.
From that small meeting the Poulton & Wyre Railway was formed with it’s main aim being to reopen to traffic, the Poulton to Fleetwood branch to once again serve the community and assist regeneration in the area, as well as assisting in generating extra local tourism by forming a heritage railway. We then hope that this will later turn into a commuter service and then perhaps we could also reintroduce freight services as well .
So over the last 8 or 9 years, the PWR has been working hard with a dedicated volunteer contingent of it’s band of around 150 enthusiastic individual members, to clear the line of over four decades of disuse and near abandonment and to now be in a good position to negotiate with Network Rail, Wyre Borough Council and other stakeholders, as well as having the support of the vast majority of the local residents, to hopefully take on this line and to then go forward to reopen it to traffic.
As the accompanying photos hopefully show, we have already made great progress restoring two of the stations on the line and we continue to do so. We have 2 sites from where we launch working parties every Saturday and Wednesday mornings, to which all are welcome to come and visit us ( though Thornton Station is by far the most accessible and where we recommend you try to visit us).
We have many events planned to commemorate this milestone anniversary year and so a visit to our stall, or to our website www.pwrs.org .Alternatively, please just support our sales stand or try your luck in our 175 raffle where you could turn £1 into £175.

I’d like to offer my congratulations to all those who make the Fleetwood Festival of Transport the amazing event it is.
Shortly I hope to be opening my constituency office at 50 Lord Street, but in the mean time, if there’s any way I can help, please do get in touch.

This is The Factory made Metro 6R4 by MG, The car was designed by Patrick Head of Williams F1 and they helped to get it to production, but it was actually built by Stuart Williams (no relation) in 1985 and it was finished over Christmas that year for the Monte Carlo Rally. The 6R4 is powered by a 3 litre V6 engine which is a powerful 430 bhp, The car can go from 0 to 100 mph (not 60) in a little under 4 seconds, 3.9 to be exact. When pushed this car can achieve approx. 3 miles per gallon, yes that’s 3 mpg and when all the costs are taken into account to run it, this works out at a steady £65 per mile, also has recently had an engine rebuild that cost a whopping £12000. The car had to be lengthened slightly do to the spare tyre not fitting in, so it is actually an inch or two longer than the early road cars.In 1986 the car was handed to Mark Duez for the Port Wine rally, then it was converted to left hand drive for the 1000 lakes rally but was converted back to right hand drive a little later. This is just a snippet of the long rally pedigree of this particular car.Another claim to the rally hall of fame this car can make, is that the current owner Michael Kitt, was approached by Sony some years ago, They wanted to use the Metro in one of the Play stations most successful games, it is an un-lockable car with in the game as long as you get to a certain level of the game.Michael has owned the 6R4 for the past 20 years and doesn’t have any plans to change that, the car attends many car shows and rally events and is now deemed rally royalty in those circles. This is a rare occasion for the MG Metro 6R4 to appear at an event like Tram Sunday as it is usually attends rally shows with other Rally cars, I would like to thank Michael for bringing it along with the MG Rover Owners Club mgr-forums.com this year.
