“It is not a new idea. What is new is theapproach, the technical approach,” says R&Dmanager Daniele Ceccarini, who reported on theproject at The Power of Duel Fuel session Monday.

Landi Renzo has been working on a reconfigura-tion of the technology associated with NGV retrofits, and the applicability of dual fuel, carrying out simula-tions to study the various impacts on efficient fuelutilization and durability.

Just as batteries are the weak link forelectric vehicles — it’s a fundamentalchallenge to cram a large amount ofenergy safely in a small space — CNGcylinders are the fundamental challenge inNGVs. NGV2010Roma features a plethoraof cylinder manufacturers.

IInnfflleexx TTyyppee IIVVssBuenos Aires-based Inflex has partneredwith Zoltek, a U.S. producer of carbonfiber, to manufacture Type IV CNGcylinders for European and U.S. markets.

Spacetech is the brandname for thenew lightweight tanks. “We expect to be inproduction in November,” says Inflex VP(and owner) Juan Carlos Fracchia. Manu-facturing will be in Cordoba, Argentina.

An unusual Spacetech feature, he toldF&F, is that the cylinders will be made fromplastic tubestock, which lends limitless flex-ibility in terms of product length. The firstType IV tanks from Inflex will be 375 mil-limeters (14 inches) in diameter.

Safety is a priority, Fracchia says. InType I cylinders, “We have a safety recordthat no one can match. We have produced4.5 million cylinders without a single

accident.” Hesays he intendsto take thatrecord to light-weight tanks.

Inflex-Argentoil is atStand A19.

NNiittiinn India’s Nitin Cylinders has been in com-mercial production of Type I CNG cylindersfor two years, and is at a world show for

the first time thisweek: Stand D18.

“We havecapacity for500,000 pieces perannum,” saysdirector Kunal Shah.

His principaloutlet thus far has

been India, with sales too to Pakistan,Bangladesh, Malaysia, Singapore,Thailand and the UK.

“We are targeting the South Americanmarket,” Shah told F&F.

“The cost competitiveness will be farbetter, and we bring economies of scale, and quality.”

33BB’’ss SSttrroonngg GGllaassssBelgium’s 3B Fibreglass is promotingcorrosion-resistant glass fiber that’s strongenough to use for Type III or Type IVcylinders without carbon fiber.

The HiPer-tex brand material yieldstanks that “fill the gap between steelcylinders and carbon cylinders,” 3B says. The Hoeilaart-based company says thatwhile ECE R110-certified steel cylindersweigh 1 kilogram per liter of volume, itseconomical Type IVs weigh just .58 kg.(Type IV carbon tanks weigh about .35 kgper liter, 3B says.)

FFaabbeerr iinn TThhaaiillaannddItaly’s Faber, a large supplier of Type ICNG cylinders, is represented atNGV2010Roma by its subsidiary ChalybsCylinders, of Thailand, where a cylindermanufacturing plant is planned. Initial

output will be Type I steel tanks, but allvariants are possible, says export managerLuca Burelli. Stand A25.

MMoorree CCyylliinnddeerrss!!Among the other firms promoting CNGcylinders at NGV2010Roma are Brazil’sMAT Incendio (B23), China’s ZhejiangJindun (B21), Sinoma Science &Technology (E11), and BeijingTianhai Industry Company (B25), theCzech Republic’s Vítkovice Cylinders(B24), and Argentina’s Kioshi (D6).

Fleets & Fuels NGV2010Roma News reportedon India’s Everest Kanto (Stand D14), Stako(A2), a new CNG tank entrant from Poland, and Xperion Alpha (D26), which is selling itsType IV tanks from Scandinavia to Singapore, inits earlier issues this week.

Like other manufacturers of premiumcylinders, Luxfer sees the world spread ofNGVs from light to heavy vehicles asboosting the market for lightweight fuelvessels.

Luxfer has a joint venture in Mazzano, near Brescia, Italy for CNG tank assem-blies and installations.

The 6,000-square-foot (1,820-square-meter) Luxfer European Alternative FuelCentre was established in 2009.

HHeexxaaggoonn BBaannggaalloorreeHexagon Composites opened its first officein India earlier this year, in Bangalore.

India country manager RavindraVasisht says the company and its light-weight tanks will be a “game-changer inthe Indian market.”

But as for all new markets, patience isrequired, Vasisht says. India’s highly com-petitive, yet government-controlled market-place is attuned primarily to Type I andType II fuel tanks and introduction of moreexpensive lightweight products will takesome time.

The theme reiterated throughout theconference this week is “education, education, education.” Vasisht agrees.“You can’t sell Type IV cylinders until you

sell the concept,” he says. He told F&Fthat he is confident that once the value ofType IV cylinders is more fully understoodand appreciated, the momentum will beunstoppable.

India’s CNG buses generally cantravel no more than 200 kilometersbetween fuelings, Vasisht says. Hexagoncylinders with higher pressures and lowerweight mean increased payload and rangeof up to 550 kilometers — a convincingreason for change.

The Lincoln Composites unit ofNorway-based Hexagon manufacturesType IV tanks in Lincoln, Nebraska. Itrecently opened a plant for Titan brandtanks for tube trailers, aimed at facilitatingfuel distribution via mother-and-daughterarrangements in areas lacking a pipelineinfrastructure.

Titan systems have been delivered tocountries including the Dominican Republic

and Vietnam.Hexagon is at NGV2010Roma as part

of GreenerCities, described as an interna-tional project dedicated to the developmentof an ever growing demand for environ-mentally friendly eco-sustained vehicles, inpublic and private transportation.

“We decided last year to involve our firm in alterna-tive fuels,” says Eric Denivelle, marketing director forEurope, the Middle East and Africa. Gilbarco brings theability to bring together fuel-metering and sale tallyingand, more important, he says, to dispense multiple fuels– gasoline, diesel, even propane-LPG, and CNG, from a single, cleandispenser unit. Gilbarco is using pistol-grip nozzles from WEH andcoriolis metering units from Endress & Hauser (Stand D24).

On show here is the SK700-II Combi, and a separate paypoint. AnSK700-II Standalone for CNG-only is available too. Gilbarco sees aEuropean market of more than 1.2 million NGVs supplied by more than3,400 fueling stations, “with numbers increasing rapidly.”
