To those of us in the industry the announcement that Mercedes-Benz would enter the growing Pick-Up truck

market was no surprise. In continuation of the Daimler Renault-Nissan Alliance which has seen the development of the Citan van built around the Renault Kangoo, the new as yet to be named 1-tonne Pick-Up will be based on the new Nissan Navara due for launch later this year. Th e double-cab 4x4 will be sold all over the world with production in Spain and Argentina by Nissan.

Co-incidentally Renault is co-developing a Pick-Up with Nissan which will be built in Mexico, which we will see next year, much the same time as the new Mercedes-Benz. Although a photo of the new Mercedes-Benz has been fl oating on Social Media, it is not an offi cial graphic. Th is one which is nearer to the fi nished product is supplied by our Norwegian colleagues Bjorgu AS.

Danish Award for Renault/Opel

Th e jointly designed Renault Trafi c and Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro has won the Danish Van of the Year 2015. Seven jury members awarded the Renault/Opel combination 55 points with the new Mercedes-Benz Vito second with 47 points and the Iveco Daily on 35 points. “Att ractive pricing, the possibility of numerous office packages and that they drive very well were the deciding

W hile new car registrations are up 30% during Quarter 1 2015 compared to the same period last year, new light

commercial vehicle (LCV) sales have almost doubled clearly indicating our continuously improving economy. Registration of new LCVs for March increased by 54% with 2,846 units sold versus 1,852 from March 2014. Total LCV sales year to date were recorded at 9,900 units by the SIMI. Commenting on the fi gures SIMI Director General, Alan Nolan said: “Th e LCV statistics are extremely positive refl ecting the signifi cant improvement in the business environment, particularly in the home market, which had been so impacted over recent years.” Best selling van? Th e Ford Transit Custom led the way once again for the ‘blue oval’ brand. In fact, Ford Ireland more than doubled its sales tally in the van segment, gaining from 434 units in March 2014 to 876 units last March.

Th e outgoing Volkswagen Caddy is in second place on 771 closely followed by the Ford Transit Connect (714). Ford Ireland Chairman and Managing Director, Ciaran McMahon, commented. “Th ese fi gures show that the recovery, in particular, the van market is continuing apace. It is heartening to see that our vehicles were again the number one choice among Irish drivers. Th e excellent growth in our van sales has been driven by a number of factors, not least our very att ractive low 3.9 percent APR and the very welcome return to the market of the single van operator, such as plumbers, carpenters and other trades people who have had to delay renewing their vehicles during the downturn,” concluded Ciaran.

Up to the end of February, new van sales across Europe were 8.5% more than in the same period last year. A total of 229,727 units were registered, with France the only major market to record a decline (-5.5%) in contrast to Spain (+29.3%), the UK (+20.2%).

In the UK to where 238% growth was posted over the fi rst quarter of 2015, Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive said, “Th is continued upturn can be att ributed to higher levels of consumer and business confi dence.”

W ith GM Opel/Vauxhall is not upgrading the Combo small panel van in line with its sister model, the

new FIAT Professional Dobló Cargo, questions were asked on what would happen next. In a joint statement, from PSA Peugeot Citroën and General Motors, the next generation of small light commercial vehicles (B-LCV) from both companies will be built in Vigo, Spain.

Th e new development forms part of the existing alliance agreement between PSA and GM, and the new light commercials will replace the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel/Vauxhall Combo. Th ey will be developed on PSA’s latest LCV architecture and the fi rst vehicles will be on the market in 2018.

Th is program, which was signed by both partners in an agreement in December 2013, is the third out of three joint projects. Th e other projects include the production of B-MPV (B-segment multi-purpose

vehicles) in the GM plant in Zaragoza, Spain, and C-CUV (C-segment crossover utility vehicles) in the PSA plant in Sochaux, France.

GM has not ruled out the development of a 1-tonne Pick-Up for the European market to join a growing number of new entrants namely FIAT Professional and Mercedes-Benz.

Hit the sands with Volkswagen Amarok Atacama! Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland has introduced a special limited-edition Atacamamodel of its award winning Amarok range. Named aft er the Atacama Desert in South America, it features special ‘Atacama’ upholstery, exclusive 17” 'Albany' alloy wheels, parking sensors, the “Light and Vision” pack which features Bi-Xenon headlamps with separate LED daytime running l ights, w indshield w iper intermitt ent control with rain sensors and adjustable headlights. It also features black styling bars with black side bars with steps and a black cargo coating. In addition, there is a leather gearshift knob with chrome trim and a leather-covered hand brake lever. Th e Atacama also features an RNS 315 Radio with built-in Navigation, Bluetooth Phone and Audio streaming and an Aux-In Jack. And all coming in a special Metallic Blue colour available - Horizon Blue Metallic (€860). Th e Amarok Atacama is powered by a 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and this engine generates 180bhp and capable of producing 2.8 tonnes of towing capability. Pricing is from €49,910 including VAT.

factors in choosing the Renault and Opel as the number one,” explained Carsten Teiner (IVOTY) from the adjudication panel.

During the course of the interview Benjamin walked and talked around the new Citroën Berlingo.

BM What we have here is the new 2015 version of the Citroën Berlingo. We’ve made three major steps/improvements with this vehicle. First is with the exterior and the new front face - what we wanted to do was to have something more optimistic because it’s a strong and important element for Citroën. But also the front face conveys more robustness. We are now a bit lower and a bit longer by 4mm.

JS Have you changed the bonnet?

BM No, the bonnet, lights are exactly the same - nothing changed.

JS Have you changed anything in the rear?

BM Th e rear is almost exactly the same except this ……..

JS Th e Blue HDi badging?

BM Yes. From this sign our new Blue HDi engines meets Euro 6 with SCR technology and requiring AdBlue. Our Euro 6 technology helps us get more effi ciency from 109 grams of CO2 per kilometre for the 100hp Blue HDi, S&S with Stop and Start and with the EGS6 automatic gearshift – the estimated fuel return is 4.1 litre for the PC version and for the LCV, it’s 4.0 litres and 106 grams of CO2 per kilometre, that’s the best scores we have.

JS Will you still have Euro5+?

BM For the LCV yes – but not on the Passenger version. On the LCV version we’ll still have the Euro 5 engines for one more year. For the AdBlue you will have to refi ll it every 20,000 kilometres in the 17 litre tank. A litt le light on the dashboard will come on at 2,400 kms before the tank is empty with AdBlue. You get a warning at 600 kms, and you have another warning at zero kms. At zero it stops because the engine does not respect the Euro 6 confi gurations anymore.

Th e interior in terms of design has new colours for the dashboard, with new upholsteries – something that’s more relaxed, fresher in the car, and of course, the new 7 inch touchscreen, connected to the internet with connectivity function, which can help you to vacate your Smartphone screen directly on the car.

JS Will that be available for the LCVs as well?

BM Yes for both Passenger Car and LCV. With new technologies, such as Driver’s Aids, we wanted to put in the car-only technologies which are useful for the customer’s point of view, which means that Active City Brake

will be launched a litt le bit later on in November, and at the end of this year, new reversing camera and front park assist – of course for both PC and LCV.

The rear camera is linked with the reversing sensors,

and rear park assist, and it’s available for both standard boots for the PC and the double opening doors on the van.

JS On the current van version you have the double seat in the fr ont, would you ever consider putt ing that into the Multispace and make it a 3-seat + 5 version – is that possible?

BM Yes, that would be technically possible because the car is the same but from a customer point of view, we did not want to do this because most of the time when you don’t have the automatic shift s, it’s not really comfortable from a particular customer point of view – so on the van aspect – yes, not on the passenger version.

JS Th e engine is 110hp diesel?

BM Yes, with three power choices, 75, 100 and 120hp and with the 120 Blue HDi we now have a new transmission with six gears, which was not the case before.

JS Have you increased the power?

BM Yes, more torque, more power, less consumption and CO2 – just bear in mind, -15% of CO2 and consumption.

JS And the highest rating is 120hp?

BM Yes.

JS Have you considered twin turbo like your French counterparts?

BM Not on this generation – it’s not the biggest seller, our major diesel engine is, so we have to focus on the mainstream engines which are the HDi 90 in Euro 5 and Blue HDi 100 in Euro 6.

L ocal Hero, the soundtrack to the movie of the same name was performed eloquently by its composer Mark Knopfl er at

the global launch of the new Volkswagen Transporter Generation Six. Indeed over the past six decades or more the Transporter has become much more than a local hero as it has served the public well, whatever the confi guration. Th e former founder of Dire Straits performed in front of an audience of 500 guests from over 30 countries against a backdrop of a selection of new Transporters (T6) from Panel Van, Caravelle, Multivan and original T1 from 1950.

As per the norm with the Volkswagen Group when it comes to reviewing the majority of its products, a major evolution takes place from one generation to the next. In the case of the new Caddy 4 and Transporter 6, they are over 80% new with the body shell keeping to

the past version's dimensions in relation to volume/space and payload. New Transporter has got what every owner/operator loves to hear – bett er effi ciency, more comfort and safer. Bett er fuel economy has been squeezed out of the latest Euro 5 and newly developed 2.0 litre TDI diesels while the comfort zone around the driver has been improved off ering more convenience and entertainment functions. A long list of innovative driver assistance systems ensures bett er safety for driver and other occupants.

Sharper styling with lower more aerodynamic bonnet distinguishes the new T6 from its predecessors, although its design is clearly recognisably Volkswagen. Front and rear bumpers have been revised as has the radiator grille, wing mirrors and tailgate - LED lights have also been fi tt ed.

Inside, depending on the variant chosen,

the dash area diff ers between the van and passenger oriented versions. For example, the arrangement of storage trays and compartments follows the function required. So be it a folding ruler, coff ee mug, mobile phone or tablet, there is space and place for them.

For the Panel Van and Kombi (crew cab) all four Euro 5 TDIs will be available off ering from 84 to 180PS mated to either 5 or 6 manual gearboxes or new 7-speed DSG automatic. In addition, the newly developed 2.0 TDI BlueMotion Euro 6 with 102PS will be on the specifi cation sheets with the remainder of the SCR engines arriving later in the year.

Relating to the driver assistance on board, the T6 takes the lead in the delivery van segment with the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), City Emergency Brake and Automatic Post-Collision Braking System topping the list. Th e latt er two systems at under 30 kp/h automatically monitors vehicles in front and activates the brakes in an emergency, while the Post-Collision Brake automatically brakes aft er a collision, even if the driver is no longer able to take action. Other items of note include automatic beam lighting, heated windscreen, reverse camera, driver alert, electric tailgate, hill descent and electric seats, to name a few. Another important development is the adjustable Dynamic Chassis Control with Normal, Sport or Comfort sett ings. In each case, the electrically adjustable shock absorbers adapt to the chosen style via a preselected programme.

For further safety while driving, all devices within the Volkswagen infotainment programme are linked by hands-free Bluetooth. For the fi rst time a 6.3 inch touchscreen is available for use by driver and passenger. Internet connection through Smartphones is now possible.

Commercial Vehicles hosted a product preview workshop looking at the various elements of the new van range that have been redeveloped or redesigned. Held at the company’s headquarters in Hannover, Germany, development engineers and experts demonstrated fi ve main aspects from Exterior and Interior design, Drivetrain, Functional Features and Driver Assistance systems, all features of the new Transporter 6.

Joachim Rothenpieler, Head of Technical Development at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, emphasised the importance of achieving the best working environment for the driver; “It has to be a perfect fi t,” he said. “Ergonomics, aided by advanced Driver Assistance systems will ensure that the driver stays fi t and healthy,” he added.

While the main body shell remains much as before, the entire front end has been redesigned with modifi cations undertaken at the rear section also. Noticeable too are the lowered door mirrors. New dashboard design with ‘Intelligent Storage Concept’ as it’s described, was one of the main focuses of att ention by the engineers along with new steering wheels, new colours and decors plus LED cargo space

lighting among the other interior changes. Depending on whether it is the van or passenger version, the new dashboards diff er with the former benefi ting with additional and more functional storage bins placed in the upper middle area and passenger side, with others near the gear handle.

With regard to the drivetrain, a new Euro 6 (SCR) diesel engine range features Stop-Start system as standard in all variants. Power choice will stretch from 62 kW (85hp) to 150 kW

(204hp) with the 2.0 litre TDI block, and all coming with a lower fuel consumption and carbon footprint, less noise and vibration. Th e 204hp unit is a 4-cylinder 2.0 litre Bi-Turbo that pushes out 450 Nm of torque. Using 100% SCR/EGR/DPF systems, the 13 litre AdBlue sized tank requires that top-ups will be needed at around 4,000 kilometres. “Bigger tanks would aff ect payload,” explained Joachim. Th e fi ller cap is located beside the diesel nossle.

Th e functional features include LED lights front and rear, electric tailgate, heated windscreen, electric seats (12 way adjustable), dynamic chassis control and mobile on-line services (including touch-screen). Other associated systems not only assure driver and passenger comfort, but also their safety, with automatic post-collision braking, front collision assist with city emergency braking, ACC – Adaptive Cruise Control, side assist, reversing camera, hill descent assist and driver alert with Pilot Park technology system. “Eye to head co-ordination is paramount here as it is essential that the driver reacts as fast as possible to an incident when necessary. Th e new T6 has to create a comfortable working environment, with good seating position, easy to reach and use switchgear with lots of systems to support and protect the driver. Th ese systems can help to reduce and even prevent stress,” emphasised Joachim.

From the stage Mr. Scholz emphasised the point by saying; “Th e market demands extremely reliable, variable and individualised vehicles. Th is is true for the past as well as today. We supply our models in top quality to meet every requirement exactly - for the craft trades, retail trade, service providers, family and recreation. With this sixth generation of the T Series, we have succeeded in doing that once again. We create value. See for yourself!”

As Mark and his band entertained with one big hit aft er another, the link between the multiple Grammy winner and Volkswagen is remarkable. Co-incidentally, Mr. Knopfl er is 65 years old, the same age as the original Transporter! As one of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles people put it, a classic performer of the modern era making his mark – Just like the T-Series Generation Six!

When East Midlands Ambulance Service found that it needed to provide medical assistance in areas that conventional vehicles could not reach it looked to

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to supply a rather special Amarok ambulance.

Reaching injured patients who are oft en stranded miles off the beaten track is a challenge that faces all emergency services. For East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) – which covers 6,425 square miles and 4.8 million people – that challenge is made even tougher by having some of the most remote and challenging roads in England.

Working in partnership with EMAS, the Volkswagen Group Emergency Services team designed and commissioned the build of the new response vehicle. In addition to all the acclaimed Amarok standard features, such as 4MOTION four-wheel drive and the ability to drive through water up to 500mm deep, the one-off ambulance is equipped with life-saving medical equipment and a load area designed to allow safe transportation of patients.

DFSK, a joint venture between Dongfeng and Sokon, China‘s third largest automotive manufacturer is spreading its wings across Europe with a presence at the 85th

Geneva Motor Show. Previously DFSK exhibited at events in the UK over the years.

In partnership with Docar AG, DFSK has introduced lightweight utility vehicles to the Swiss market. DFSK exports more than 1.5 million light commercial vehicles and minibuses all around the world. In 2013, DFSK launched a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) for global markets. Th is large family car comes with front wheel drive and is powered by either a 1.5 litre petrol or 1.2 litre diesel engine.

C37 is its compact minivan for business and family. Compact exterior with spacious interior, the C37 can comfortably seat nine passengers.

Gloucester Rugby, newly crowned winners of the European Challenge Cup, has signed a three-year main sponsorship deal with Mitsubishi Motors. Th e agreement, which begins July 1,

2015, will see the famous three diamond's Mitsubishi logo appear on the club’s new style playing and training shirts, replica wear, as well as signifi cant branding around the stadium and on the pitch.

Mitsubishi Motors (UK) has been a sponsor of Gloucester Rugby for eight years but this move represents a considerable increase in commitment to the club, at a time when the Mitsubishi brand presence is growing rapidly.

Lance Bradley, Managing Director, Mitsubishi Motors (UK) said on the deal: “Th e tough and robust nature of Rugby fi ts very well with the Mitsubishi brand. Th is agreement will cover a period in which the company launches several important new models, not least a brand new L200 Pick-Up truck, which is an iconic symbol of Mitsubishi's reliability and strength.

T he original Unimog, or (Universal-Motor-Gerat - universal motorised working machine) f irst made an

appearance in 1946. Since then Unimog has set the benchmark for off -road working vehicles, and when it comes to tackling extreme terrain, there has always been the feeling that to drive anything other than a Unimog is asking for problems.

To launch the new Euro 6 range which now includes a Crew Cab variant, Mercedes-Benz invited us to drive the legendary truck at the Horstwalde special purpose test facility about

60 kms South East of Berlin. Within the test facility's 1,100 hectares of space, you will fi nd a dedicated area with whatever conditions you could wish for, from fl at paved routes, to the most extreme gradients, in cobblestone, concrete or sand. If that wasn’t suffi cient there were natural and fabricated pools of sludge and/or standing water - and just in case Daimler had arranged for it to rain heavily!

Th e latest Euro 6 versions of U4023 and U5023 are distinguished by the restyled front grille and light clusters which give the model a more contemporary look without soft ening the appearance too much. Cab length has been

increased by 120 mm and we were treated to the fi rst sighting of the new Crew Cab version.

To achieve Euro 6 compliance, the design team had to accommodate the enlarged exhaust box on the chassis of Unimog. Th is had to be done without the SCR unit aff ecting ground clearance, or impeding the fi tt ing of all manner of work implements, and to be fair they did an excellent job if it.

While temperature management for Euro 6 has been a concern with all truck models, it is relatively easy to engineer out the problem for road going trucks that will spend their working day on the highway. A completely diff erent problem therefore a truck that may not turn a wheel or operate at slow speed during its working day once it arrives on site.

Th e solution for this issue became one of the Euro 6 Unimog’s best att ributes. Th e design team moved the engine back by 1 metre, creating enough space to accommodate the additional cooling components directly behind the grille. Behind the cooling components we fi nd the now mid-mounted Daimler four cylinder OM 934 BlueTec engine. Th is neat 5.1 litre 230hp (170 kW) is commonly found in the Mercedes-Benz Atego models and has earned a solid reputation for reliability and commendable fuel consumption. In this application the OM 934‘s 900 Nm of torque is held from 1,200 rpm through to 1,600 rpm. Unimog is now fi tt ed with an enhanced engine brake with a rated power of up to 180 kW. We found this a useful addition especially for the extreme downhill sections which can easily be negotiated without engaging the footbrake.

Repositioning the engine towards the centre of the truck has greatly improved the ride quality, and makes Unimog exceptionally comfortable to drive even at speed over rough terrain. Th e repositioned power unit has also delivered other benefi ts such as a PTO driven directly from the engine.

Inside the cab, the improved trim and fi nish brings Unimog closer to its siblings in the Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicle range. Th e cab boasts more headroom and enhanced levels of refi nement, while remaining functional. Some noticeable improvements include the

adjustable multifunction steering wheel, and the simplifi ed switch gear, which is well positioned in a pleasant dashboard. Importantly controls for driving mode and diff erential locks are easy to engage and disengage while on the move. Also welcome is the improved layout for the tyre pressure regulator. Th is will select a predetermined pressure to suit diff erent driving conditions, such as Road, Sand or Rough Terrain. With Unimog now having integrated air-conditioning, the familiar roof mounted HVAC unit will become a thing of the past - even for underground mining work.

Some of the largest customers for Unimog worldwide are the Defence Forces and Emergency Services, and no doubt their demands have infl uenced the development of the iconic model over the decades. One example of this is Unimog’s fj ording ability. Th e model can tackle a depth of 1.20 metres, and this was explained as a ‘military 1.20 metres,’ where the demand is that the truck must enter the said depth of water at an angle, and when fully immersed the engine must be turned off . Aft er a period the vehicle must be restarted and driven out of the water without diffi culty.

Because Unimog has earned its reputation over the past six decades operating in the most extreme conditions with the most demanding customers, its original purpose has to some extent been forgott en, and it could be said to be a victim of its own success. Unimog was originally designed for work in the agriculture sector, and the fi rst models had a track of 1270 mm - apparently the spacing of two rows of potatoes. Since 1946 the model developed to become the go anywhere vehicle with the most impressive set of statistics of any series production vehicle. A welded frame has a torsional fl ex of up to 600 mm, and an axle articulation of up to 30 degrees. Portal axles ensure excellent ground clearance, with approach and departure angles of 44 and 51 degrees respectively, and not forgett ing Unimog’s ability to work to a lateral inclination of 38 degrees.

Unimog comes with the superb Mercedes-Benz PowerShift 3 AMT transmission, and has eight

forward and six reverse ratios. Occasionally we found a slight hesitation when shift ing off -road. Th ough arguably we only noticed a delay because the transmission is so impressively quick in its on road applications, that we now notice any slight hesitation. However you soon adopt your driving style to account for the timings, and change just a litt le earlier. To anyone familiar with off -road driving, or with Unimogs, this will not be an issue. Th at been said, even a driver new to off -road vehicles, would have no diffi culty handling a Unimog, and driving a 'Mog should really be on everyone’s bucket list.

Away from the dramatic rescue missions of the world’s emergency services, Unimog has regained its original place back among the agriculture sector especially within Europe. Depending on task, Unimog can act as a tractor or a tool carrier and then perform on-road tasks at a road speed of 80 kp/h. Th roughout Europe there is a new sector emerging which is that of the ‘Field to Farm to Factory’ where vehicles like Unimog draw a trailer from the fi eld where produce is harvested and goes straight to the processing plant. Th is has been realised to be an area of expansion for the brand. Here Unimog can dramatically increase productivity

over an agri-tractor with greatly improved journey times and still operate as a practical all round work unit. Another important feature of Unimog is the vehicle’s legendary longevity. Around the globe 'Mogs can be found working tirelessly, oft en for decades in some of the world’s harshest conditions.

This longevity and the truck’s inherent versatility, allows it to accomplish a wide variety of tasks with a minimal amount of adaption, and means that investing in Unimog can open up other possibilities for diversifi cation. Th e new, and more refi ned Euro 6 version will further extend and widen the model’s appeal within countries where the emission regulations apply. It will also strengthen the vehicle’s appeal and usefulness to operators working in environmentally sensitive areas such as land management and forestry, as the more traditional areas.

Unlike other off -road utility vehicles which are primarily designed as road going units, and then adapted to work off -road, Unimog is specifi cally designed to do what it does, and this is possibly its one great att ribute, and arguably the secret to its success for over six decades.

A Vito for every need as new Mercedes-Benz goes on sale

E xciting times for Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles as the new Vito goes on sale in Ireland. Th is new third generation model

heralds a new dawn for the three-pointed-star brand as it comes to market fully equipped to compete with the best its rivals can offer. That armoury includes class leading payloads, a choice of fuel effi cient 1.6 litre diesels or powerful 2.15 litre units, and, for the fi rst time, a choice of front or rear wheel drive models.

As well as panel vans, the Vito also comes in passenger friendly versions - the crew-cab Mixto and the all-seater Tourer model. With two wheelbases, and available in three diff erent lengths, the scope of the new Vito is greater than ever before.

A beautiful day in scenic County Clare was the backdrop for the Irish launch where the Irish distributor Motor Distributors Limited (MDL) had thoughtfully provided a decent cross-selection of models to try out. First up were two variants of the 1.6 litre front wheel drive panel van. Fitt ed to the Vito this is a quiet and refi ned powerplant. Th e entry level model, the 109 CDI is best suited for operators for whom payload is not a priority. With 88hp it’s ideal for city operations but for longer distance operations the 111 CDI featuring

a 114hp versions of the same engine off ers a more torquey power delivery.

Both these vans were presented in entry level specifi cation, yet they are far from basic. In fact the Vito comes well specifi ed with features such as the excellent Cross Wind Assist off ered as standard. Twin airbags, Att ention Assist and tyre pressure monitoring are also fi tt ed to all vehicles, as are twin sliding doors.

For heavier work, the traditional rear wheel drive model powered by the 2.15 litre CDI diesel will be the version to opt for. It’s off ered in three power outputs - 136hp 114 CDI, 163hp 116 CDI and 190hp 119 BlueTEC, with the 163hp version available to test on the day. First up in the panel van, immediate impressions were that the engine isn’t as quiet as the smaller capacity unit at start-up and when ticking over, but on the move that’s less discernible. It’s certainly not lacking in ability though - even with a decent payload on board, we were impressed at its ability to pull away from low revs without having to work the gearbox unduly. Speaking of which, the standard six speed unit is slick and easy to use, but the optional seven speed auto off ers smooth unobtrusive gear shift s - well worth considering.

Th ere’s a noticeably diff erent feel to the rear wheel drive version, not necessarily bett er or worse, though if we were pushed we’d say the RWD models feel just a litt le bett er balanced overall. The Mixto crew cab offers a satisfying compromise between passenger and load carrying capabilities. It will seat five in comfort, yet still has a cargo volume of up to 4.1 cubic metres. Ideal for the operator having to bring crew to a site, or for the family person needing to use their van at the weekend.

Finally the Tourer can seat up to nine people yet there’s still room for luggage space of up to 970 litres. Like the others we noted its refi nement and ease of driving.

Th e new Mercedes-Benz Vito is pleasingly competitive price-wise too, with the panel van being off ered from €18,650 (ex taxes & delivery related charges). Th e Mixto range starts from €37,790 (inc VAT and VRT), while the Tourer is priced from €47,950 (inc VAT and VRT).

All in all the new Vito is a very competent and likeable addition to Mercedes-Benz’ commercial line-up. A must to check out for anyone thinking of buying a new mid-sized van.

Showtime for Commercial Vehicles at NEC, BirminghamCitroënIn order to keep its leading sales position, Citroën premiered the new Berlingo van range with the BlueHDi Euro 6 complaint engines topping the bill. Improved specifi cation levels and enhanced styling have been added to the vehicle to keep it in-line with the opposition. BlueHDi uses Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology that controls the exhaust emissions and therefore requires AdBlue in the fi ltering system. A 17-litre AdBlue tank is installed that is said to last up to 20,000 km, depending on the type of operation. New Berlingo will off er 75/90hp Euro 5 engines alongside the 100/120hp Euro 6 units.

Citroën’s ETG6 automatic transmission is now also available as is the Electric L1635 LX with a 636 kg payload.

FIAT Professional In presenting the FIAT Professional Doblò Cargo to a public audience, the Italian brand is confi dent in continuing the rich vein of sales success from last year. Exhibited in panel van and Work-Up dropside forms, the fourth generation of same sports a fresh exterior design, improved engine performance for the main models plus a new frugal EcoJet version. Also on show was a black Ducato Sportivo that also made an impression as did the versatile 3-way tipper variant.

Ford A special milestone for an iconic van as the Ford Transit marks 50 years. In the UK, a ‘Golden’ coloured Transit convoy began from the show to visit dealerships nationwide. Since the fi rst Transit left the assembly line at Langley, England in 1965, almost 8 million Transits have been built. On average, a new Transit has been bought every 180 seconds during its lifetime. Th e Ford Transit has touched the lives of most of us,” said Mark Ovenden, Chairman and Managing Director, Ford of Britain. “From house moves to moving people, the Ford Transit is an essential tool to get the job done. It has become a mobile offi ce or workshop for some – and loved by us all.”

IsuzuTh e Isuzu D-Max continues to pick-up (Pun intended) awards from the British trade press. At the CV Show, it was awarded the Best Trade Pick-Up in the 2015 Trade Van Driver Awards for the second year running while VANSA2Z recently presented the D-Max with Pick-Up of the Year for the third year in a row. Meanwhile the annual Fleet Van Awards announced the D-Max as the winner of the Pick-Up Truck of the Year last autumn. Next year will see the arrival of the newest version with Euro 6 drivetrain.

IvecoEffi ciencies in the delivery system were explored by Iveco as it rolled out its Vision concept vehicle. Packed with innovation and future thinking from top to tail, it will probably make its way into production in time. Meanwhile, the focus is on the latest Daily, current holder of the International Van of the Year Award for 2015. Premiered here was the Hi-Matic, the fi rst eight-speed automatic transmission in its class co-developed with ZF transmissions.

“Th is is our Vision of the future; a prototype for what the next generation of Daily may look like. Its creation is centred, above all, on low environmental impact mobility and safety,” said Bob Lowden, Managing Director of Iveco UK.

We have been long-standing supporters of the event, and it provides a great platform to show off our extensive product range, as well as spend time with existing and potential customers.”

In addition to the new Vito, Mercedes-Benz Vans showcased its range of vehicles, including the Citan small city van and the mighty Sprinter, in all guises across two areas – stand 5D10 and in the outside exhibition area adjacent to Hall 5 of the NEC.

Peugeot Peugeot, which celebrates 120 years of light commercial vehicles in 2015, is now also using the ‘Professional’ terminology. On its return to the NEC halls it gave the debut to the new Partner with the Electric version alongside. Ever since the Partner (and its sister van the Citroën Berlingo) entered the scene in 1996, both variants of the same small commercial proved popular with both owners and fl eet operators. Focus of att ention with the latest model is its newly developed Euro 6 engine technology that has low CO2 as well as guaranteed delivery of lower fuel consumption than here-to-fore. Driver assistance systems and a more functional cabin are now included in the redesign.

Renault Conversions are the buzzword at Renault these days as the French brand introduced a number of interesting and novel bespoke and factory re-fi ts. Apart from the Twizy Cargo ambulance, Trafi c minibus and Master Catering Van, the Renault Master Groundskeeper conversion drew much att ention with its mini-golf course installed within the load bay. Th ere was also a refrigerated Trafi c fi t-out, while the Master catering vehicle is going on tour across the UK with celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver’s name.

At the pre-CV Show event Pascal Schmitt , Vice President, LCV Global Sales & Marketing, joined by fellow French executives at Renault France, outlined the ongoing success of the brand’s van division as 2014 reported a 32% increase in sales to 2.7 million units globally. Sister brand Dacia launched the Duster Commercial at the CV Show.

Rhino Products KammBar is Rhino Products’ new all-aluminium roof bar system. Using the latest technologies in design and production, the KammBar is the most aerodynamic bar the commercial vehicle supplier has produced to date. Coated with an anti-corrosive fi nish, KammBar has been independently crash tested to 20G and is TUV accredited.

TruckmanCanopies on Pick-Up trucks are a must for most owners and Truckman has come up with its latest Utility Top designed especially for the Volkswagen Amarok, featuring a fully-kitt ed display with tools and equipment. Truckman Utility Top is also available for the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi L200 with a version for the Isuzu D-MAX planned.

GM Vauxhall General Motor’s brand in the UK, Vauxhall hosted the fi rst public debut of the new Corsavan based of course on the latest Opel Corsa 3-door hatchback. As we know from the car, it sports a new front lock and shape, improved interior quality and enhanced tweaks on the driveline and chassis. Up against the Ford Fiesta van, it will appeal to small business owners primarily. New Corsavan boasts fuel economy 85.6 mpg and low CO2 rating of 87 g/km.

Noticed on the Vivaro 9-seater combi, thanks to Steff en Raschig, Director at GM Opel Commercials, based in Germany (pictured) was the superior fi nish, especially with the stitched leather seating.

Xtreme Sales Cassie and Mary-Anne demonstrated the new Method standard race wheels to spruce up your 4x4. “Lighter, stronger and faster,” is how Xtreme Sales’ Chief, William Rhodes described the US sourced Method products best suited for Pick-ups and some LCVs. “Top class engineering, rigorous testing and proven performance redefi nes what is possible in the creation of our wheels,” he explained. Xtreme Sales, based in Christchurch, Dorset holds the franchise for numerous accessories for 4x4 and off -road vehicles.

W hile the van sector continues its new model introduction phase timed for Euro 6 engine emission legislation, most manufacturers have completed their launch programme. On target for the brands now is the renewal

of its Pick-Up truck line-up. It is interesting to see that this business cum leisure vehicle is att racting more newcomers with Mercedes-Benz becoming the fi rst premium marque set to enter the fray. Before then we will see FIAT Chrysler Automobiles launch a 1-tonne model through its FIAT Professional brand, supplied by Mitsubishi Motors. Ford and Nissan will off er new models this year which all augers well for a most competitive International Pick-Up Award, the trials of which will be held in Norway in autumn.

Here we take a brief look at what’s coming from Ford and Mitsubishi.

New Mitsubishi L200: 5th Series At the 85th Geneva International Motor Show, the all-new success to the Mitsubishi L200 Pick-Up truck took its fair share of the limelight alongside the other new models and concepts on display. With the new 1-tonne 4x4/4x2 model, present customers and new clients will benefi t from six decades of expertise in the development of utility vehicles and four generations of L200s to date. Between 1978 and the end of 2014, over 4 million units have been sold worldwide. Manufactured at Mitsubishi Motors’ Laem Chabang Plant in Th ailand, the all-new L200 has a sales target of 200,000 units per year, (compared to 150,000 for the outgoing L200), with Europe its second largest outlet.

Developed over the past two years, the new L200 takes its styling cues from the Concept GR-HEV from 2013, which featured an advanced version of the J-Line side profi le, fi rst seen in the previous L200 from 2005. While that version created quite a stir when launched, Mitsubishi knows that customer demands have further advanced and the following model had to off er even more style and comfort, bett er driveability, improved durability and more features as standard.

Pick-Up trucks have come under criticism from environmentalists for their higher carbon footprint than standard cars and Mitsubishi has worked hard in the direction impressively. From the new 2.4 litre 16V 4-cylinder common rail diesel, CO2 emissions have dropped from 199 g/km to 169 g/km compared to the 2.5 litre unit used in the outgoing model.

Th e design team has also managed to increase the roominess inside within its compact overall dimensions, but while still retaining the tightest turning radius at 5.9m. Noticeable too is the deeper load bed up to 475mm (from 460mm).

Taking the centre panel as a visual reference point inside, the new curvaceous dashboard gets higher-grade materials with the 7% increase of torsional rigidity to the benefi t of handling and stability but also noise/vibration/harshness (NVH) have been reduced for a quieter cabin.

Ford Ranger Revamped When the current model was launched, the Ford Ranger brought style and panache to the Pick-Up segment. With the competition upping the ante and Euro 6 engine legislation almost upon us, Ford Motor Company revealed a redesigned version of its popular 1-tonne at the recent Bangkok International Motor Show. With some style too! As the shiny dark blue Ranger XLT was driven down the stage ramp into and through an artifi cial pond before parking up for the photo-shoot.

Featuring sharper frontal looks and more chrome, new Ranger is transformed. Th e rear light cluster has been modifi ed accordingly while the side profi le remains the same. As does the drivetrain.

Apart from Th ailand, the Ranger is produced in South Africa (for European market among others) and South America for Argentina primarily. It is sold in over 180 countries worldwide. Th e revamp also comes on the back of sales success with the outgoing model – up 20% last year from 2013. At the launch conference, Ford Asia Pacifi c Exterior Design Manager, David Dewitt said; “It represents a smarter kind of tough and will help our customers achieve more, whether at work or with their families.”

Able to master 800mm water depth and tow 3.5 tonnes, the drivetrain remains much the same with the 3.2 litre, 5-cylinder Duratorq TDCi producing 147 kW/ and 400 Nm while the 2.2 litre 4-cylinder unit delivers 118 kW of power and 225 Nm of torque.

No surprise that the new Ranger will be packed with innovative technologies and connectivity as safety systems have been enhanced and the second generation Sync 2, Ford’s in-dash connectivity package using Microsoft soft ware enables the driver to control functions with voice commands. Set for international markets in 2016, the Ford Ranger is the reigning International Pick-Up Award holder.

ŠKODA has released images of the final vehicle developed under the 2015 ŠKODA Trainee Car Project.

Th e sleek Pick-Up truck, named ŠKODA FUNstar, was designed and built by twenty-three young students at the ŠKODA AUTO Vocational School, located in Mladá Boleslav outside Prague.

Th e fun vehicle concept, based on the new ŠKODA Fabia, is the result of the Czech Republic company’s ‘trainee car’ project, which was run for the fi rst time last year. Th e ŠKODA FUNstar will be celebrating its public debut at the 34th GTI Meeting at Wörthersee from 13/16 May next.

Th is is the second year in a row that the Volkwagen Group owned manufacturer has given selected trainees the opportunity to create their dream car. Th e company’s goal with this programme is to promote and strengthen the vocational students’ creativity and expertise. Th e ŠKODA FUNstar is a Pick-Up truck based on the new ŠKODA Fabia, and it stands out with its steel-grey and moon-white metallic colours. Th e sills, grille surround and the rear spoiler form a striking contrast in refl ex-green. One special feature is the LED lights mounted below the sidebars. Th e duel-lens headlights also feature LED technology, with green LED light strips serving as daytime running lights. LEDs are also used in the rear lights.

Th e ŠKODA FUNstar drives up on 18-inch ‘Gemini’ alloys from the Octavia RS. Th e engine is a 1.2litre TSI petrol with 120bhp. Th e transmission features a seven-speed dual-clutch automated gearbox. Th e sporty look continues in the interior with individual elements fi nished in the steel-grey and moon-white colours. Th e students used one of the best sports steering wheels ŠKODA has to off er, and the 1400-Watt sound system off ers a ear-stretching music experience. Training young people is a key part of the Czech car manufacturer’s social responsibility. Provided free the participating students are paid for their work during their apprentices. Aft er successfully completing the training, ŠKODA off ers all graduates a permanent job.

Toyota’s motorsport-inspired Proace PRO40 camper conversion sports an eye-catching new look

for the new 2015 season, re-wrapped in a new livery to celebrate Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Champion status in the World Endurance Championship.

Inspired by the success of the team and its star drivers Anthony Davidson and Sebastian Buemi – who jointly claimed the Drivers’ Championship title – Toyota has updated the PRO40’s racing decals to match this season’s TS040 Hybrid race car. Th at includes proudly displaying the new number one on the doors.

The camper’s refreshed appearance coincides with the early rounds of this year’s WEC race series. Following a strong showing at the season-opening contest at Silverstone, Toyota targeted a repeat of last year’s victory at the Six Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium in early May.

Based on a standard Toyota Proace van, the PRO40 was created by

conversion specialists G&P. Th e Staff ordshire-based fi rm, which has years of experience working with Toyota models, fi tt ed out the van with four-berth accommodation and an array of home comforts, including a gas hob, fridge-freezer, microwave oven, TV and water supply.

“So smooth, so quiet, so lively and easy to drive,” were the comments from just one of the members of the Fleet Publication’s team driving the all-electric Nissan e-NV200 for the fi rst time. Th ose of us that

are familiar with the workings and economics of operating a zero emission vehicle, their low cost running, especially in city and town environs are among EV’s biggest benefi ts, not to mention the signifi cant carbon footprint reduction.

Since we acquired the Nissan e-NV200 Evalia 5-seater light commercial from Nissan Europe via Nissan Ireland, interest and curiosity has been amazing from the general public – helped of course, by the explanatory livery and att ractive looks!

An adaption of this version bas been transformed into a full-blown taxi, to great success following trials in various cities around Europe and Japan. Most recently a seven-seat variant of the Evalia was launched at the Geneva Motor Show which opens the e-NV up to a much broader and diverse customer base from large families to the hospitality industry and sporting organisations. Talking laterally about hotels to Golf Clubs and Formula 1 teams at the other end!

Pharmaceutical manufacturers and IT companies love this clean technology too, as they see this professionally innovative alternative source of propulsion akin to the high levels they are at. Expect to see more collaborations between the blue chip fi rms from both spheres in the near future. Th e partnership with the Infi nity Red Bull Racing team is interesting. Two new e-NV200s are currently transporting drivers, staff and their kit for the championship winning F1 team around the team’s Milton Keynes facilities and elsewhere in the UK.

Electric LCVs and Formula One racing might seem on opposite ends of the automotive spectrum. But Dany Boulenger, Division General Manager of Nissan’s LCV Business Unit, stated as both try to reduce their carbon footprints, the relationship – and the technology – are symbiotic.

“We are working with the same challenge,” said Dany. “Th e challenge is how we make the most eff ective use of energy. And we have a regenerating system in both sides, in Formula One and in eNV200, and that makes things fun in a way.”

To boost fuel effi ciency, F1 vehicles integrate energy recovery systems. Th e e-NV200 incorporates the same regenerative braking system as

found in the all-electric Nissan LEAF, converting kinetic energy during deceleration into electrical energy.

Built at Nissan’s plant in Barcelona, the e-NV200 can cut fl eet running costs by 40% without compromising practicality, said Jean-Pierre Diernaz, Director EVs for Nissan Europe. “Th e electric commercial has exactly the same LCV att ributes as the NV200 IC engine – best turning circle, best payload and best cargo capacity in its category,” added Jean-Pierre.

Large production facilities and warehouses/distribution centres also see the merits of having an all-electric van/people carrier like that off ered by Nissan. Th en, there are the big name courier companies such as DHL Express. As part of its ‘Go Green’ policy, the e-NV200 plays an important role. Earlier this year, 50 units have been put to work (silently) in and around Milan and Rome in Italy. Th e pilot project brought into real life aft er carrying out simulated daily use tests. On average the familiar yellow DHL Express Nissan EVs complete 45 deliveries and 25 collections per day, within a 100km radius, that is well within reach of the projected 170km range distance available before recharging. Seven additional cities around Italy will soon be included in the zero emission scheme. “Th e deal with Nissan is perfectly in-line with the commitment we have been pursuing for years to the environment,” declared Alberto Nobis, Managing Director, DHL Express Italia.

Meanwhile, the six-month winter trial of Nissan’s all-electric e-NV200 van with British Gas came to a successful conclusion last year with the energy giant placing an immediate order for 50 vans, with a further 50 to be delivered a few months later.

Th e nationwide pilot of 28 vans, and the resulting order, is part of British Gas’ wider commitment to ensuring 10% of its fl eet of 13,000 home service vans are all-electric by 2017.

Another intriguing aspect to the Nissan e-NV is that it can deliver electricity even in the midst of disaster. Aft er the great East Japan earthquake, the batt ery in the e-NV provided light, kept mobile phones charged and helped medical services carry out their life saving roles.

What you get with the e-NV200 is two award winning products from Nissan – the NV200 van and the 100% electric Leaf passenger car. e-NV200 shares the same electric mobility technology as per the Leaf, European Car of the Year and just last month was awarded Irish Green Fleet Car of the Year by our sister publication, Fleet Car.

Making the e-NV so easy to drive apart form the impressively torquey motor is the excellent visibility provided by from the rear-view mirrors and reversing camera, while the heated seats and heated steering wheel,

which save on energy provide instant warmth. Its turning circle at 11.3m is impressive ensuring that negotiating narrow streets and tight parking spots are a cinch making collections and drops as speedily as possible. Essential for players in the urban jungle.

F ollowing its initial importation of Chinese commercial vehicle products in the shape of Higer coaches and more recently

Sinotruk, the Harris Group has taken on the marketing and distribution of LDV vans. Th e once renowned UK LCV brand, which stretches back to the days of British Leyland and Leyland DAF, is now under the ownership of Chinese giant SAIC Motor. Just over 10 years ago LDV had 800 employed at its plant near Birmingham and with the arrival of the Maxus van range, jointly designed with Daewoo, heralded much potential.

Alas the promise or premise did not materialise, and aft er a failed management buyout, the Russian GAZ Group took an interest, which did not work out either, followed by the takeover in 2011 by SAIC which took all the tooling back to China. Initially, SAIC supplied local markets and began exporting to Australia, Chile and South Africa. Now through the Harris Group, the Irish market will be re-established for the LDV V80 panel van line-up with a range of minibuses and chassis-cab/crew-cab versions to follow. In 2017, the LDV family will expand with the all-new G10 MPV and panel van arriving. Currently, the Harris Group has appointed dealers around the country and is seeking more suitable vendors.

V80 is practically the same as the original Maxus version but with some modifi cations. Th e grille

and lights structure are diff erent, more distinct, with LED daytime running lights fi tt ed. Th e Euro 5b 4-cylinder 16 valve 2.5 litre TDCi Eco-D diesel is supplied by Italian engine supplier VM Motori, (now owned by FIAT Chrysler Automobiles) produces 136 hp and 330 Nm maximum torque through a 6-speed manual gearbox, produced by Hyundai. Disc brakes are now installed front and rear and the stopping system is enhanced with ABS/EBD/ESP.

Engineered in Britain, the V80, which features many of the industry’s blue chip components will be positioned in the 1-tonne plus segment currently dominated by Ford, Volkswagen and Renault.

Th ree body types are marketed at fi rst – the entry-level short wheel base low roof along with the two height versions (medium/high) of the long wheelbase variant. Up to 11.6m3

load volume can be achieved in the LWB hi-roof model. On the First Drive Test, we had the medium roof van version on trial, which off ers a 10.2m3 load space.

With regard to furniture and fi tt ings, V80 does not come up short, as the three-seater is as well equipped as any other van out there. Items such as parking sensors, electric/heated mirrors, MP3 connection, air-con and 8-way seat adjustments are available. Th e centre mounted dash area; a unique feature of the original model is retained.

So it has a lot going for it, plus the fact that a 5-year warranty is off ered. Att ractive pricing is a bonus too.

Shanghai Automotive Industry Components (SAIC) - a Fortune 500 company based in Shanghai, is a major Chinese partner of two of the biggest names in the global automotive industry - General Motors and Volkswagen - with an annual output of over six million units. It has strong commercial vehicle links with Iveco for the Asian markets and also owns MG UK.

Nicely surprised is how we felt aft er the extended run to North Dublin. Despite the heavy rain and strong winds, the journey was pleasant behind the wheel. Realising that the design technology may not be up to speed with the plethora of new vans launched in the past year, the LDV is still right up there, and can compete with the best. Th e V80’s driveability cannot be questioned as the powertrain is as effi cient as the others, performing well at low end speeds in high gears, although the steering did feel a litt le heavy when stopping and moving around roundabouts. Not an issue though. Disc brakes all round provide the stopping power.

From the multi-adjustable seat, a perfect driving position is formed. Visibility is good, aided by exterior mirrors featuring a convex lower section. Reading the info on the dash is a litt le diff erent as all of the data is on the centre display area. Takes a bit of gett ing used to!

Available in three colours, white, silver and grey, the V80 is rated with 4 stars by Asia NCAP. With high equipment levels as standard such as air-con, Bluetooth, cruise-control and att ractive pricing, the LDV V80 has the potential to do well, and restore its long established name in the van business.
