Toyota’s driving ambitions today shape tomorrow‘Challenge 2050’ – our manifesto for the
future – aims to take our vehicles and
activities beyond zero environmental impact.
Toyota is no stranger to innovation. Almost
20 years since the company first championed
the development of hybrid technology,
Mirai – the world’s first dedicated, mass-
produced hydrogen fuel cell vehicle – is
already making a cleaner, zero-emission,
hydrogen society a reality.
Advanced fuel cells make for fast, simple servicingThe Mirai’s servicing needs are surprisingly
straightforward. The first 20,000-mile routine
service for a UK Mirai was completed
recently by one technician in a one-hour
time slot by the service team at Jemca’s
Edgware Road workshop.
World Green Car 2016Emitting only water vapour when driven, yet
practical and fun to drive, Mirai will contribute to
the development of a global hydrogen energy-
based society. The achievement has not gone
unnoticed. At the New York International Auto
Show, a jury of 73 automotive journalists from
23 countries voted it ‘World Green Car 2016’.
The latest hydrogen refuelling stations for LondonA pan-European initiative to create a refuelling
network for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is
already under way. Supporting commercial
and private fleets operating fuel cell electric
vehicles, the fourth hydrogen refuelling station
has opened at the National Physical Laboratory
in Teddington and the fifth in East London at
the Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing
Excellence, CEME.

Led by automotive manufacturers including
Toyota, fuel companies such as Shell, and
local government, consortium projects such
as HyFive and the UK’s OLEV schemes
will see up to eight more UK hydrogen
refuelling stations opening in the UK, backed
by £5 million of government funding. The
launches will make it easier for drivers
to adopt and enjoy new, clean motoring
technologies and ensure the market
continues to develop.
1. Zero CO2 new vehicle emissions by 2050 – a 90% reduction from 2010 levels
2. Zero CO2 life cycle emissions – by improving manufacturing and logistics
3. Zero CO2 plant emissions – by improving technologies and using alternative power sources
4. Minimise and optimise water usage – including even more recycling
5. Establish a recycling-based society and systems – spanning design to vehicle disposal
6. Establish a future society in harmony with nature – conserve, reforest and replant
Announced in 2015, six initiatives will aim to realise a cleaner, more natural, yet fully mobile world.

AI cars are coming Can embedding artificial intelligence make
a car smart enough to anticipate and then
avoid potential accidents? With 1,400 robotics
Reading the roadAutomated driving meets AI
10
Toyota has been researching autonomous vehicles for over a decade. As automated and assisted driving is poised to revolutionise travel, 2016 sees the company opening a third dedicated Toyota Research Institute (TRI), focusing on artificial intelligence (AI), materials science and robotics.
and advanced sensing patents already filed,
Toyota believes so. It plans to spend a billion
dollars (£682m) to create more advanced
vehicle systems that could act as a ‘guardian
angel’ for drivers, anticipating any obstacles,
as well as taking avoidance actions when
needed. The goal is to engineer a system
capable of taking very complex evasive action
beyond a single lane – the capacity of some
current systems.
TOYOTA RESEARCH INSTITUTE: FUTURE-DEFINING GOALS
Bridging the gap between
fundamental research and product
development, and with initial funding
of $1 billion, the Toyota Research
Institute has four goals:
To enhance automobile safety by
creating a car that is incapable of
causing a crash, regardless of the
skill or condition of the driver.
To work to increase access to
vehicles for those who otherwise
could not drive, including
older people and those with
special needs.
To help translate Toyota’s
expertise in creating products for
outdoor mobility into products for
indoor mobility.
To accelerate scientific discovery
by applying techniques from
artificial intelligence and
machine learning, in particular
to materials science.
Steering innovation
ASSISTING MOBILITY FOR THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED
A new wearable mobility device developed by Toyota is providing blind and visually impaired people with information about their surroundings.
By identifying features such as escalators,
stairs, doors and toilet facilities, the
technology can help users better navigate
indoor spaces like office buildings and
shopping malls. Echoing the company’s
commitment to help everyone enjoy the
benefits of mobility, Project Blaid sees
the creation of a slim, unobtrusive smart
sensor worn around the neck.
A camera detects the surroundings
and communicates information through
speakers and vibration motors, whilst the
wearer can interact via voice recognition
and control buttons. Toyota plans to
develop the device with integrated
mapping, object identification and facial
recognition functions.

“Toyota is about more than just the great
cars and trucks we build. We believe we
have a role to play in addressing mobility
challenges, including helping people
with limited mobility to do more.”

Toyota Setsuna: crafted in woodMilan Design Week saw a unique two-seater
concept – a roadster exquisitely crafted
in wood. Powered by an electric motor,
the car, complete with a 100-year clock
in the dashboard, celebrates the way
beautifully engineered vehicles become, over
generations, much loved family heirlooms.
Assembled using traditional Japanese
carpentry techniques, Setsuna’s body is
made up of 86 handmade panels, each of
which will change in appearance as the car
ages. When repairs are needed, individual
panels can be removed and replaced.
GT86 Shooting Brake conceptToyota has unveiled a new Shooting Brake
version of the GT86 coupé. Adding new
hatchback styling to the rear of the GT86, the
concept by Toyota Australia gives the GT86
more rear headroom and luggage space.
The design team debated at length about
how far their changes to the GT86 coupé
design should go, eventually remodelling only
the rear quarter and roof. Explains Nicolas
Hogios, Design Chief for Toyota Australia:
“Like kids in a lolly shop, we thought about
restyling more of the car; however, like a
good parent saying ‘no’ to too many sweets,
we made the conscious decision to keep as
much of the original GT86 as possible.”
The prototype car, hand-built in Japan under
the direction of Toyota’s global sports car
division, is fully functioning and has been put
through its paces on Toyota test tracks.
Toyota and Lexus have never been afraid to showcase creativity, imagination and craftsmanship though their concept vehicles. Once again this year, designers and engineers have been busy putting their visionary new ideas for tomorrow into motion…

More than ten million drivers worldwide have now chosen a Toyota or Lexus hybrid.
It’s not hard to see why: with the largest hybrid
choice available in the UK, our petrol hybrids are
cleaner, greener and cheaper to own and run
than equivalent diesel models. Whilst companies
cut their emissions, whole-life costs, company
car tax and NI, their hybrid drivers reduce their
personal tax liability for Benefit-in-Kind.

Boasting bold coupé-like lines, a new dynamic hybrid crossover, the Toyota C-HR, was unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

CO2 combined (g/km) – from 86
BIK (Benefit-in-Kind) 2016/17 rate – 15%
New Toyota C-HR

VEHICLE SPECS
The Toyota C-HR is also available with the
new 115hp/85kW 1.2-litre turbo engine first
seen in the Auris, and a choice between a
6-speed manual gearbox and a Continuously
Variable automatic Transmission system
(CVT). The CVT is available in front-wheel or
4-wheel drive versions.
Combining Toyota’s very latest 1.8-litre
hybrid system and the Toyota New Global
Architecture (TNGA), the C-HR delivers
a nimble driving experience coupled with
levels of efficiency and styling previously
unseen in the crossover segment.
The TNGA platform and its low centre
of gravity provide precision handling
characteristics similar to a modern
C-segment hatchback.
Introducing distinctive styling, the body
follows a diamond architectural theme.
Wheel arches project prominently at all four
corners, emphasising the new crossover’s
strength and rigidity.
Delivering 122hp, the new hybrid powertrain
is more efficient and lighter, offering sharper
performance than previous hybrid systems.
CO2 emissions are as low as 86g/km –
unrivalled within the segment.

BIK (Benefit-in-Kind) 2016/17 rate – 7%
Nineteen years since the launch of the legendary Prius hybrid, Toyota has revealed its latest Prius Plug-in, capable of returning 282mpg – the best fuel efficiency of any plug-in hybrid – and a CO2 figure of just 22g/km*.
New Prius Plug-in
*Subject to homologation
VEHICLE SPECS
The second generation of Toyota’s
grounbreaking plug-in hybrid electric vehicle
(PHEV) runs even further and faster in all-
electric mode. A larger 8.8kW/h lithium-ion
battery pack powers speeds of up to 84mph
and an electric-only range of over 31 miles
– almost double that of its predecessor.
With a new driving position and more
precise, responsive handling, Prius Plug-in
retains the quiet and refined hybrid system
found in our other 15 models. With a
chiselled profile and edgy character lines,
the car has a more road-hugging look and a
lower centre of gravity.
Where it can deliver higher efficiency than
the petrol engine, for instance driving
around town and on shorter journeys, Prius
Plug-in automatically favours its all-electric
drive capability.
Unique new features include LED projector
headlights with vehicle-speed-sensitive
adaptive beam technology, and gas injection
heat pump air conditioning for EV (electric
vehicle) mode. The Plug-in also uses a
new solar roof charging system, equipped
with its own battery which can produce
enough power to drive the car.
The new Prius Plug-in will be in UK
showrooms from January 2017.

wheelbases and three lengths, including (for
the first time) a Platform Cab for bespoke
vehicle bodies.
With the load capacity of a medium-duty
model but the footprint of a car-derived
van, the new PROACE Van Compact
breaks new ground.
To increase load-carrying flexibility, PROACE
Van will be available with a new Smart Cargo
system. An opening front bulkhead and a
mechanism to raise the front passenger seat
provide a class-leading 4m capability for
accommodating longer items.
Payloads extend up to 1.4 tonnes and
powertrains feature 1.6 and 2.0-litre
turbodiesel engines, with a power range
from 95 to 122bhp.
PROACE Van will be available in Panel Van,
Crew Cab and 9-seat Combi versions and as
a Platform Cab. It will also provide the basis
for a new passenger vehicle, the PROACE
VERSO large people carrier.

VEHICLE SPECS
Fresh equipment specifications, options
and redesigned cabins ensure the new
Hilux matches the comfort, safety and
convenience associated with modern SUVs.
UK models will be available with Toyota
Safety Sense, introducing a range of active
safety and driver assistance features.
New exterior design cues capture Hilux’s
combination of toughness and refinement.
Improved front and rear ground clearance
provides even better off-road performance.
A new rear bumper incorporates a lower
step for easier access to the load deck,
which is larger, stronger and more rigid.
Towing ability has been significantly
improved, with a maximum 3.5-tonne
available within the range by the end
of this year.
As previously, Hilux will be offered
in Single, Extra and Double Cab
configurations, introducing Toyota’s
new 2.4-litre Global Diesel engine which
delivers more power and torque. Two-wheel
drive Hilux versions are equipped with
six-speed manual transmissions, whilst
all-wheel drive models offer a choice of
six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes.

Civil engineers get to work with Hilux
The civil engineering, earthworks and
waste management contracting company,
based in Chippenham, operates a pick-
up fleet made up entirely of Hilux, with a
range of Active and Icon grades. Staff rely
on the models’ reliability and capability to
meet a wide range of business demands,
often in arduous site conditions.
Explains Tom Church, Company Director,
“We’ve used other manufacturers’
pick-ups in the past but have come up
against a number of reliability issues.
We chose Hilux instead as they have
a great reputation within our industry.
They also have good whole-life costs,
while still ticking all of the boxes for the
requirements of our business.”
MJ Church, one of Britain’s biggest Hilux customers, recently took delivery of its 60th vehicle in just two years.

A new peace-of-mind warranty underlines that Toyota is definitely ‘back in business’ in the light commercial vehicle sector.
UK FIVE-YEAR WARRANTY FOR NEW TOYOTA LCVS
As well as being a proven workhorse, Hilux
also offers excellent safety and comfort.
Model specifications can include Vehicle
Stability Control, driver and front passenger
airbags, air conditioning, power windows
and remote central locking, plus (Icon
and Invincible models) the Toyota Touch 2
multimedia system with touchscreen control,
Bluetooth and rear-view camera.
“We’ve been running Hilux vehicles for the
past couple of years with no issues and we
look forward to continuing to run them for
the foreseeable future.”
Tom Church, Company Director, MJ Church
Mirroring the warranty that is currently
provided for Toyota’s UK passenger
vehicle range, the new UK LCV warranty
provides cover for five years or 100,000
miles, whichever comes first, with no
mileage limitation for the first year.
Toyota GB explains, “Our decision to
increase the warranty cover to five years
reflects the faith we have in our all-new
LCV range to perform superbly, and our
commitment to giving our customers a
great deal. We are proud of the reputation
our vehicles have for long-lasting and
hard-wearing quality, put to the test in
extreme conditions around the world.”
The new-generation PROACE Van and
the all-new Hilux pick-up will be amongst
the first models to benefit.
