Sales Management CommentsWe always have felt fortunate to have the continued support of Fullblood Simmental breeders who have allowed us to be publicly known as legitimate Canadian marketers of the strain. In turn, we have never operated as “fair-weather fans” either, and have always actively, enthusiastically and sincerely promoted Fullblood Simmental, whether they be Austrian, French, German or Swiss, and will continue to do so. We look forward to a bright upward future for the “Fullbloods”! We also, as most of you know, manage the two “big” Eastern Canadian Fullblood sales, namely Ferme Gagnon & Guests and Bar 5’s Extravaganza, which both offer opportunities to many Fullblood producers to market their cattle within. The Fleckvieh Equation would probably encompass as many different Fullblood Simmental breeders as any sale in Western Canada. Being the sale manager for all three of these sales that combine so many of the Canadian Fullblood breeders has fortunately offered us more exposure to the active marketplace and has increased our expertise about the gene pool. This double-header event, last year, saw a crowd size as big as I can remember at any sale, and why wouldn’t it? This sale allows “more breeders” to see “more breeders”, specifically in Alberta, with abundant “networking” opportunities available here as well your own herd improvement opportunities through potential purchases. Most likely, if you are going to choose only one Simmental sale to go to in Alberta, it may as well be a “2-in-1” event! I use the word “double-header” and say “2-in-1” in the previous paragraph when maybe the word “trifecta” might be more accurate if we count the large amount of semen and embryos that are consigned, as a sale, in itself. Even more reason to be in Red Deer on “Super Sunday”, December 15th. Family tends to be more on our minds at this time of year, and we wish you and your’s all the best and enourage all of you to cherish who you have and make extra time for them. We try and bring these breds in the condition we like to buy them, middle of the road with enough cover to maintain condition to re breed early but try to avoid too much to hamper calving and future production.

Full Fleckvieh. Mathilda is a massive female that is sure to impress. You really need to see this heifer in person to appreciate her capacity and broodiness. She has always been one of our favorites and it will be tough to see her leave. She has as much top and rib as any we have brought to town. Her dam is one of the most correct Fleckvieh cows we have and catches everyone’s attention. She raised a high selling bull that was purchased by Seven Oaks and Rachelle Thirsk in 2012 and her 2013 feature Radium bull calf is very impressive. Fleckvieh Equation is here and we are pleased to take part in this sale again. We bring you four great heifers from our herdsire, Anchor D Van Gogh, who is a high performance bull and crosses very well with our cows. Once again, we want to stress that we do not creep feed our calves.

Green Hill Ranch wishes to announce that Beechinor Bros. Simmentals have purchased most of our winter calving cow herd. It is time to eliminate the work load and only concentrate on the fall calving program which will hopefully allow us more freedom to do other things. We have confidence that the herd we assembled will blend well with their herd and continue to work for them as they have for us.

I guess the highest endorsement Topnotch could receive was at the recent National Trust sale, when Cherry Creek Farms purchased two more packages of semen after seeing their Topnotch calves hit the ground a week before the sale, the first calves born outside of South Seven and Blue Spruce Simmentals. Warlord was the high selling bull calf from the 2009 National Trust sale. In fact, he was the only bull sold that year from the “Bull Expo”. We knew he was so exceptional, that we struck a deal with the great folks of SIBL/CLAY Simmentals to buy him right out of the barn. . . thanks to Transcon for announcing his purchase in the sales ring prior to the start of the Trust. We purchased Warlord because the muscle mass he displayed was tremendous. He was big topped, deep sided, big footed, huge quartered, with a large scrotal -- all wrapped up in an amazing polled package. What’s even more impressive. . . he passes all these qualities on to his progeny. His first three daughters that we sold by auction this October brought an amazing average of almost $16,000!! Unfortunately, we had to put Warlord down due to a breeding accident in his second year on the farm. Thankfully we had drawn a limited amount of semen, so we can carry on his great traits.
